Mature look to Barnet squad

The annual overture to our pre-season kicks off tomorrow with the game against Barnet. I am not sure how long this fixture has been part of our football calendar, I`m sure someone will tell us, but it serves Barnet well and seems to be part of a reciprocal agreement that allows us to use the ground for some youth, reserve and ladies fixtures.

It gives us the first opportunity to see any new signings in an Arsenal shirt and emerging youngsters alongside as those who`d managed to escape international duties during the summer. The pattern is usually straightforward with a different side in each half - a game of two halves and two teams. The 22 players in the squad for tomorrow`s game contain a healthy mix of experienced first teamers and promising youngsters plus our two new signings of the summer all of whom will have some time on the pitch if we follow normal practice.

The full squad is: Manuel Almunia (GK), Andrey Arshavin, Nacer Barazite, Marouane Chamakh, Johan Djourou, Craig Eastmond, Eduardo, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Lukasz Fabianski (GK), Emmanuel Frimpong, Kieran Gibbs, Conor Henderson, Laurent Koscielny, Henri Lansbury, Ignasi Miquel, Samir Nasri, Havard Nordtveit, Tomas Rosicky, Armand Traore, Thomas Vermaelen, Theo Walcott, Jack Wilshere

At least half the squad are first teamers but even the reserves have a pretty familiar look though we haven`t seen Barazite or Nordtveit in an Arsenal shirt for a while. It`s often been a fixture with a youth team look about it but this time there are only 7 players in their teens in the squad and 3 of those will leave their teen years behind before the year is out. This fixture in the season before last had 17 teenagers in the squad and last season 12. The times they are a changin`

I believe this is the 10th edition of this preseason curtain raiser.

Bring it on!! IVe missed my Arsenal.

Looking forward to seeing, and welcoming, Chamakh and Koscielny. I have always liked the look of Barazite and JET, so it will be interesting to see their progression. Without stirring up a hornets nest, I did hope to see at least ONE new goalkeeper. Oh well, my fingers are still crossed. Good luck lads.

Yayyyyy!! :D

Makes you wonder what they do in the pre-season regime... Denilson already inured? :(

Arsenal starting XI: Fabianski, Nordtveit, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Traore, Frimpong, Rosicky, Wilshere, Arshavin, Simpson, Emmanuel-Thomas

Looks cool this lineup! :D Now it's delayed to 3:10pm local time it seems.
GoonerLou
Who is actually playing DM? haha. Well I suppose when you're playing a league 2 side all of your midfielders can attack

Nice to see Arshavin's body language looking a lot more positive than it did for most of last season. Hopefully that summer break was what he needed to shake off the dissapointment of not qualifying for the WC.

Thoughts on first half team: love the look of Frimpong, Nordtveit looks comfortable enough on the ball and has good size and pace so I hope he can make the team eventually
TPowell
Bloddy ATVO is incredibly slow here... :(
GoonerLou
Comfortable outing for the boys. 4-0 is a good scoreline though the second half could have seen more goals looking at the way we controlled the midfield. Frimpong is developing interestingly as is Nordtveit.

Young Jack looks good in the highlights I saw! :) And who's that young blonde guy playing on the left, with all those tricks and good shots with so little backlift?!
GoonerLou
what happened to Almunia? Announced to play yesterday, not in the squad today?
bootoo
Very disappointed to see the best Arsenal match reporter on bleeding soft drinks after the game. ;-)
FatOldDave
Hope that does not sound the "death knell" for Almunia. It is saying a lot for our No.1 to be named early on and not featured at crunch time.

It was IPA FOD, IPA, selected specifically because it was 4.8%!
Little Dutch
LD, Wrong thread, man. Never thought 4.8% could do that to any one.
