Wenger Confirms Squillaci Signing

Wenger Confirms Squillaci Signing

Arsene Wenger has confirmed the signing of French central defender Sebastien Squillaci.

It's been almost four days since reports came through that Squillaci had undergone a medical, yet there had still been no official confirmation that the International defender had actually signed, raising yet more speculation as to why it hadn't been finalised. Reasons ranged from 'We've ran out of 'Q's in the club shop', to suspicions he'd been killed by the club's medical staff.

However none of that matters now after Wenger confirmed the signing at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Blackburn game this coming Saturday dinner time.

'We needed a centre-back of quality and experience if possible, and at the right price - he was all of that,' Wenger said of Squillaci. 'He is a real defender and is good in the one against one, good in the air, and can score goals on set-pieces as well. I believe he will be suited to the English game.'

Le Boss also confirmed he take no part in the game against Fat Sam's thugs.

'He will train with us tomorrow morning, but will not be involved on Saturday.'

I think they decided to abandon the attempt to beat the Nasri record for a protracted signing once they realised there were only 5 days left until the window closes. A good solid signing though. It seems like ages since Wenger signed a teenager for the first team. Ramsey was the last and before that Denilson 4 years ago. More than a dozen others in their 20's or 30's since then.

The club thought we might sign a keeper soon and thought they'd save some dosh by announcing a double signing. That way they only have to pay the club photographer for one set of shots and both new signings could simply share one Arsenal scarf to hold above their gurning faces for the publicity shots.

Certainly Amos. There's no argument anymore that Wenger only signs kids. Rosicky, Gallas, Arshavin, Vermaelen, Sagna, Chamakh, Eduardo, and now Squillaci. Great experience in amongst that lot!

I just hope we complete the summers activities with the signing of a keeper. We still have spent modestly if you take away sales meaning we should be able to comfortably spend up to 10m on a keeper if that amount was needed. Unless they have faith in Scezny to be good enough in a year or two they need to bring in someone younger than Schwarzer who turns 38 next month i believe.

My gut level feeling is that we won't sign a keeper, tho one other player may come in besides Squilacci. Interesting article with graph showing Arsenal's cash efficiency as compared to other PL clubs (Man City's is practically off the graph): http://blog.footbalistic.com/?p=1445#comment-72384899

Sajit, Squilacci will have #18, which doesn't fill me with joy. Not a lot of our recent #18s have inspired (Cygan,Silvestre...)

YES. We are in group H. I really wanted to be in that group, now just to wait 4 hours to see who we will face. How exciting the ceremony/draw is....
