Journos in Belgrade are reporting Arsenal's game might be in jeopardy due to floodlight failure. I'll post the rest of the lineups as I get them.
gunnerkid107
I heard there was a power failure.
gronedrone
Who will play in the Cesc role, Jack or Tommy?
gronedrone
Just what we need, fabianski playing in the dark.
iceman10
Lights back on and then off again. It'll be up to the referee to decide if there is enough light to play a football match.
gunnerkid107
I bet Rosicky will play in that role, similar to Blackpool. @iceman that'd be funnier if it were so true
gunnerkid107
Is this champions league or Sunday league?! Does look as though Arsene was proper p*$sed with Saturdays performance.
iceman10
was following denilson on twitter (and translated his tweets) - he said they were in the dressing room and the lights were out, waiting for them to come back on to dress in their kits - then he tweeted again saying the lights had come back and gone out again - looks like things are ok now and the game will go on. Apparently there are lots of riot police around and the travelling gooners are being pelted with the usual items opposition fans get pelted with-also Belgrade gooners brought along 140 members of their contingent
jaelle
what an atmosphere they're creating... unbelievable.
ptv-
Agreed PTV. What an atmosphere. I just want a win from this game, even if it is a scrappy 1-0, dont care. After the debacle on the weekend and the amount of injuries we have, any win will do.
True-Gooner-Blood
Arsh!! Totally against the run of play too. One Chance, One Goal!
True-Gooner-Blood
YES! Thank you Arshavin, and brilliant play by Wilshere.
ptv-
Lovely backheel by Young Jack there!!:-)
True-Gooner-Blood
Jack has this habit of giving back-heel assists! :D
GoonerLou
We really have to start putting away our chances now!
ptv-
Whether that was a penalty or not, you just know that Arsenal can never keep a clean sheet. They're ALWAYS going to concede at some point.
Gooner_Vin
Waste a couple of 100% chances, and we get punished immediately... shock.
ptv-
Any chance we could swap Stojkovic for Flappyhandski? :-)
True-Gooner-Blood
We're compressing the play but its taking some intricate stuff to get through a packed defence. We need more speed and crosses to beat this lot. Jack is in the groove. Song is several levels below. Wish the guy could tackle and think a bit faster.
Wyn Mills
So far the liabilities for me are Djourou, Denilson and Rosicky. Rosicky will be subed. He is standing and losing passes everytime he touches it. Song is also playing below is level.
Arseniger
*his level
Arseniger
Nasri to come in for Rosicky.
Arseniger
Why do keepers always dive before a kick? Seems to me the odds are better if they wait until they know where the ball is heading. and rely on their speed or the penalty taker hitting a poor one.
Wyn Mills
Chamakh is amazing at getting people sent off and winning penalties (",)
bowiecokemirror
Our defence looks iffy, Very late in closing down. If we can't beat this sorry lot we don't deserve to go much further.
Wyn Mills
Icant decide if it was a good save or just a *****e penalty by Arsh. Im gunna go with a bit of both.
True-Gooner-Blood
Cwap, what's happening fellas?! Another missed penalty..
JT_daniel
Oh surprise, bloody surprise. We are in big trouble this year.
julieloveshenry4ever
Just wish Nasri was on the pitch when we got the penalty.
True-Gooner-Blood
Do we want to win this bloody match or what?? Where's the aggression?
Wyn Mills
Rosicky's been poor tonight.
Gooner_Vin
I'm dreading Sunday. What price Cesc, Robin and Theo.
julieloveshenry4ever
Ever since Song scored that goal against Blackpool, he has got forward all too often. For me this is why he has been poor for several matches now.
gunnerkid107
I AM NOW A MASSIVE FAN OF CHAMAKH'S FUNNY HEAD!!!
jaelle
chamakh saves Wenger's bacon.
Wyn Mills
Are there any travelling Gooners in that stadium? There is almost no reaction or cheering when we score.
True-Gooner-Blood
Arsene needs to tell Song that he's not an attacking midfielder, ffs!
jaelle
So good to see us score a goal like that. More please.
Gooner_Vin
TGB, yes there are traveling gooners in the stadium, about 300 of them - plus about 150 local gooners
jaelle
Jaelle - totally agree, don't know what's gone on with Song the last few games. Wenger probably has told him he is now!
Gooner_Vin
Wilshere off. The kid has been awesome again tonight. Adds so much steel to our midfield. He puts some of the older players to shame really.
Wyn Mills
All too skeptical probably. Waiting for the final whistle and reserving judgement. Well done Chamakh...
julieloveshenry4ever
Chamakh works so hard as well (like a skilful version of Adepaymore in his one-off 30-goal season). His record of drawing fouls/pens and getting people sent off is amazing so far.
GoonerLou
We don't seem to attack with any kind of speed these days. Wenger must take some kind of perverse pleasure in wengerballing us to death.
Wyn Mills
Squiiiiiiiiiilllllllaaaaaccccccccciiiiiii!!! Wanted to do that for ages.
Wyn Mills
Well done Flappy!!!
bowiecokemirror
Well done Fabianski. Took my advice and waited until the guy had hit it. ;)
Wyn Mills
Good Save!! Finally something goes right for him.
True-Gooner-Blood
Good lad :)
julieloveshenry4ever
What a see saw game. The result is all that matters and if it finishes like this the boys deserve credit.
Deltaforce
Fabianski will be like a new signing...... ;)
gunnerkid107
Oh and well done to Toto for his first goal!
True-Gooner-Blood
Song never knows what to do with the ball in attack. Its easy to confuse him unless its a straightforward shot.
Wyn Mills
WTF is going on? Can't we just be boring?
afri-gooner
Our defence trying to give Flappy some practice. Hate the way we go all sloppy when we're well ahead. A lack of ruthlessness there. It will cost us against better teams.
Wyn Mills
6/6 points is all you could want in CL. Why do I still feel down, though?
julieloveshenry4ever
When's the last time we scored 2 headers in a game? When's the last time we saw 2 pens saved in a game?
GoonerLou
Partisan are without doubt the poorest team in our group.
Wyn Mills
Massive away win in the CL! Broke our terrible away record. Just don't play that way on Saturday. And are Cesc & RVP the only gunners who can make good penalties???
jaelle
How many times has Chamakh forced a pen/sending off now?
jaelle
Well that's better! I'm happy for Fabby saving the pen! 6 out of 6 pts yep i'll take that.
hackneyval
jaelle, add nasri to the penalty list and thats about it.
Deltaforce
Flapyanski - 8, Sagna - 6.5, Squillaci - 7, Djourou - 6, Gibbs - 7, Song - 6.5, Denilson - 6, Rosicky - 5, Wilshere - 7, Arshavin - 7.5, Chamakh 8.
Arseniger
Subs - Nasri - 6, Vela - 5, Clichy - 5.
Arseniger
Jeepers, look at the Leeds- PNE scoreline: 4-6! :-)
julieloveshenry4ever
Good win!! Do that 2-3 more times Chamakh, and all CBs won't tackle you in the pen box! Hoorraayyy!!!
Malaysian_GunnerZ
Spurs fans are minding their own business for the first time today. What a new way of life.
Arseniger
detla, I forgot RVP maybe Chamakh as good pen takers too
jaelle
Prepare yourself for the tirade of luminosity related headlines. Arsenal shine brightly blah blah blah. I promise you they won't be able to resist it.
gronedrone
Defense was terrible, tho. Play like that on the weekend & we'll get slaughtered. Tho if AW plays Squilacci, I'll be interested to see if he continues his good record v. Drogba. In club and int'l football, Squilacci has won nearly every game v. Ivory Coast/Marseille with Drogba, scored a couple of times too and won the physical battle each time.
jaelle
All that won't matter Jaelle, at Marseille Drogba was a 'one man team' and he didn't get nowhere near the service he gets at Chelsea. And most importantly your information would be relevant if it wasn't for the fact that Squillacci now plays for Arsenal where Drogba will free to roam havoc ;) Should the manager assign a man to hassle Drogba or continue with the tactic he has always deployed where we focus on our own game not the opponents. It worked wonders in our first leg against vs Barcelona as Messi was Barca worst player on the pitch, but the flaw of that tactic was revealed in the second leg. Personally I haven't a clue, the manager gets paid to make these decisions and maybe he should try something different this time to stop Drogba or have faith in our new defense.
gronedrone
Well done Fabianski. What this game showed was that the bile directed at the keepers is misplaced, the attack is letting us down by needing so many chances to score. We have now had 16 more shots than Chelsea but have 8 less goals this season, Arshavin, by my reckoning, has now created 20 chances for team mates this season with 3 converted. It baffles me that this is somehow all Almunia's fault! :-)
Little Dutch
Almunia also gets slaughtered for conceding a penalty Denilson and Gibbs will be off the hook I'm sure because they're not Almunia and Fabianski.
gronedrone
Agree with LD, the keepers have been good so far this season on the whole. Our problem has been sloppy finishing and bad defending. We need to sort out the rest of the team firts before we look at the goalkeepers. Part of this is down to injuries of course, let's hope we get Cesc back for the game against Chelsea.
bowiecokemirror
LD, It's Almunia's fault. All of it. :)
Wyn Mills
Decent illustration of my point, ten days ago, Chelsea away at West Ham. Chelsea 3-0 up at half time like we should have been tonight. Cech makes an error and allows Parker to score in the last minute, it's inconsequential because the attack have killed the game off.
Little Dutch
It doesn't look like Cesc is going to be ready for the Chelsea game, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the bench as an emergency plan like he did against Villa last season.
gronedrone
Apparently our players change into their kits using the lights from their cell phones
jaelle
Don't see why Rosicky is taking some criticism. It was a pretty disciplined performance from him. He got through a terrific amount of work and passed pretty accurately making space for himself and finding the player in space. Not too many of our midfielders managed that tonight. Seeing Song play further forward than Denilson seems to defy the natural order for those two players to me. But inexplicable handball aside the Brazilian had a great game too. The ref seemed keen to make sure he got home safely tonight and let quite a few crude Partizan challenges go unbooked though having said that he also let Djourou off for one that would have picked up a yellow in the PL. Not always so tough on the physical game in all parts of Europe it appears.
Amos.
grone, fair pts, just grasping at straws re Chelsea on Sunday.
jaelle
And how about the Partizan support eh, whenever we scored they didn't bat an eyelid and kept on singing. Brilliant.
gronedrone
LD - You're way too over-defensive of our keepers. If someone says our keepers are good enough, it doesn't mean we're blaming not winning a game, not winning a league or being late to work on them, it's simply saying they're not good enough for a team that is striving for what we are trying to achieve. Fabianski makes too many mistakes, last season Almunia did. I don't think they're the reason we didn't win the league, but i think if we were to push close to winning the league we're in need of better goalkeepers because fact is, they DO make too many mistakes. For some reason everytime any seems to point out one of these mistakes you come down in them like they're blaming our keepers for some sort of forthcoming armageddon.
FuiKaka
keepers AREN'T good enough*
FuiKaka
Grone - I don't think Gibbs will come underfire for conceding a penalty simply down to the fact that it was in no way shape or form, a penalty.
Rocky7
Pointing out that our attack is missing more goals than our keepers are letting in isn't being over defensive at all. It's simply adding a bit of balance in understanding what the shortcomings really are. A balance that's been woefully missing in a debate that has become far too one dimensional. It doesn't mean that we wouldn't always prefer to have better keepers (as much as we would prefer better defenders, midfielders and attackers) simply that our need would be less pressing if our attack were taking fuller advantage of the chances we're creating. Right now we need to improve our finishing every bit as much, or more, as we need to improve our keeping.
Amos.
We have rvp, bendtner, walcott and fabregas to come in on the attacking side that may improve our finishing, so we have options. To improve the goalkeeping our options are WS and vito mannone. I agree that our attack being wasteful puts pressure on the defence but also how much pressure are the attack under to win us games because the defensive unit is so poor?
iceman10
Agreed about wasting chances. Though LD - Arshavin is as guilty, if not more so, than most. He might have created 20 goal scoring opportunities, but I bet he's wasted nearly as many. To steal one of your phrases, if it was Bendtner wasting that many chances he would be crucifed.
Rocky7
Its only the attack that can win us games - the defense can only stop us losing.
Amos.
I was being a wee bit tongue in cheek there FK, but whilst the analysis of the keepers and the criticism of them is hysterical, I do have a natural desire to counter balance it. I've had this discussion so many times in the last week now, but if you are bored of hearing me defend them or trying to find some kind of balance amongst the hysteria, trust me, it isn't even close to how bored I am of people carrying on so ridiculously about how awful they are. Bottom line, Chelsea aren't going to let us go through one on one with the keeper four times and give us a penalty to score a solitary goal on Sunday. I agree with iceman, not having RvP and Cesc- easily our two most clinical finishers- unavailable might explain why we've been so profligate ever since the Braga game (we should have killed Sunderland off too), but we have enough good players up there to be able to beat a goalkeeper when through one on one.
Little Dutch
Absolutely Rock, he missed 2 one on ones and a penalty last night- despite a good performance. The opposition won't be that generous on Sunday and neither can Arshavin afford to be.
Little Dutch
I think if we look at the season so far we have averaged roughly 4 goals a game, squlacci and kos have bedded in well and we have had 2 goalkeeping errors that cost us goasl. I think our biggest problems are full back and defensive midfield.
iceman10
A level of goalkeeping errors are inevitable. It only really matters when they cost us games.
Amos.
I don't think it's as black and white as that Amos. I think it's very important the errors are kept to a minimum in terms of creating confidence and calm.
iceman10
Funny how differnent reports onthe same game change. It was reported that a 1000 gunner fans travel to watch last nights match and it was suggested that they change by using their cellphones. Nevertheless although Song did IMO go too far forward to often his game was not that bad really was it? I thought jack was on top of his game and how the player who elbowed him did not receive marching orders is beyond Jack was hacked and hacked and hacked and still kept coming back for more. We have IMO a real star, the lad has a heart as big a Par Lap's; and that was bloody big. Agree with you Rocky re Arshavin, he had enough to score 10 goals. IMO Jack made him look good. Chamakh as usual gave 100%, and I did think Tommy went missing on occasions. And if it werenot for Flabski in goal we may have all been moaning about a 3 all score line. Still cant talk about last Saturdays game, if Ces does not play.
alwaysgunner
It's not the goalkeepeing errors that matter, it's the reaction to those errors, all great keepers make mistakes (as do all players) but what seperates the great keepers from the mediocre ones is that the great keepers respond to those mistakes with a great performance. In recent history our keepers have responded to mistakes with further mistakes, Almunia will have a chance to show he's changed next time he plays by not letting an error play on his mind. Fabianski had a good game last night, I pray he can follow it up next time he takes to the field .... because I do see the potential in him, I always presumed he was going to be a brilliant goalie.
Rocky7
Arshavin is looking for his form, he's nowhere as decisive as his first 6 months with us and i am not sure what the problem is. Chamack is such a teamplayer and he's showing the same qualities as at Bordeaux, none of the lazy Adebayor strutting around. One issue i have is that Chamack seems to be our only option upfront right now and we are one knock away from fielding Arshavin up there. How do we find ourselves in this position again? I think Arshavin didnt enjoy it up there last season. Fabianski did good but he needs a string of consistently good performances, starting on Sunday. I am worried about his jittery nerves and he seems to have blood rushes to the head, a bit like Almunia a few years back. Enough has been said about Almunia, for me he is a good keeper, nothing more, nothing less. That said, i want Arsenal to have a world-class spine from gk to cf to makes us more solid and increase our chances of silverware. The last one we had was Seaman/Lehman, Adams/Campbell, Vieira, Henry. Right now, we don't have that in the goalkeeping position or centre-back. RvP and Cesc are world-class. Vermaelen is showing signs he could get there, but Almunia is not.
Gael-Force
I think what this goalkeeping debate is throwing up for me is the balance between defence and attack of this Arsenal side. We're naturally, and set up to be, a very attack-minded side which probably means that conversely opponents can get at us more readily. IF we took more of our chances, then we'd be okay. That's a big IF and not one we can guarantee. How often do you feel that we need to be more ruthless, how often is that said? My personal take is that the we do need to get a better balance and, when it comes to games against the very top sides, we've got to play much smarter - rather than saying "let's just focus on the quality of our game". I don't know whether it's personnel, tactics or coaching; it's probably more the latter two. When you see Arsenal play, does anyone else ever honestly feel that we aren't going to concede a goal? I never do anymore.
Gooner_Vin
And just one more point on how much more comfortable I feel seeing Gibbs in that left-back position than Clichy. I feel Wenger has to give Gibbs a run in the team now because their respective performances merit this.
Gooner_Vin
Agree with you there GV. The weak GK/defense are undermining the attack and causing waves of panic to ripple forward through the team. We could be 3-0 ahead and it still wouldn't surprise me for us to be pegged back to 3-2 and left with a jittery final 5 minutes or so. 4-4 results against 'Pool and Spuds, anyone? Four goals should be enough to win ANY match! The back was entirely to blame!
julieloveshenry4ever
"Pointing out that our attack is missing more goals than our keepers are letting in isn't being over defensive at all. " - that would be the case if Fui were only referring to LD's first post in which he made that argument. But clearly Fui isn't referring only to ONE post - he's referring to LD's exaggerated defensiveness and caricaturizing of some fans' arguments over a period of weeks on this blog about the keeper issue. It's like it's a sin or something to say we need a better keeper. Kind of obvious that Fui is not just focusing on one post from LD, sorry you didn't get that. BTW, LD's point about how our attack is also very much a problem is spot-on. When I first posted on the previous thread re Almunia, I pointed out that the greater issue v. WBrom was the performance of the entire team, not just Almunia - and that it was telling that Almunia's performance dropped (after a good run) exactly in the game that his teammates were seriously dropped their own performance. As to LD's point, our attack is no longer lethal like it used to be during the Invincibles, it's incredibly wasteful and it puts our defense under incredible pressure. That, coupled with the fact that we have no consistent defensive solidity, and that this season our DM Alex Song suddenly thinks he's an attacking midfielder - then it's no wonder our good-but-not-great keepers come in for more scrutiny. Either AW has instructed Song to do what he's doing or Song has just decided he can express himself as an attacker but he's seriously leaving our backline vulnerable. He has to knock it off. Oh, I also made the passing comment that I sometimes wonder even if we had a Buffon or Casillas in their prime if we still wouldn't have serious defensive problems given the other issues that are not being addressed.
jaelle
If I keep being defensive about the keepers, it's only because I keep eharing the same criticisms over and over again. If you read what I have said in the Almunia article objectively, you'll see I've said that I don't vehemently disagree with the assertion that Almunia is not Arsenal number 1 quality, nor have I denied that I think he made a big error on Saturday. (i.e. by not coming off wen he was not fit). Both of those points were made in the article and are there if you're willing to read them. I would conclude I'm not the one characterising arguments here.
Little Dutch
BTW, we have the dubious distinction of being top of the injury league: http://ladyarse.tumblr.com/post/1209889343/premier-league-injury-table
jaelle
LD, it seems both sides of this argument feel they're being stereotyped and unfairly dismissed. I understand there are hysterics on other blogs who fixate on our keepers. There are also others who (admittedly I have the least tolerance for them) brook no criticism of the team and manager, and sneer and ridicule those who don't fall into the official line. But I don't think this blog is populated by hysterics -- tho I've been dismissed as a hysteric by Amos. Attack those who fixate on the keeper issue as our overriding problem by all means - as if getting a better keeper will magically solve our failings. But I don't think there's anyone here on this blog in that camp.
jaelle
The main gripe for me is that Wenger himself wanted a new goalkeeper because he obviously was not satisfied with what we have. Once he has identified that problem it is his job to fix it. Not fixing it will invite criticism from all corners. Its funny also to think that he appears obsessed to get a good bargain and not pay over the odds while earning a handsome wage himself.
paul_ownz
That looks like a shot at the manager, it is not. Just an observation that someone who seems so shrewed at saving money for the club is more than happy to earn a bucket load of cash
paul_ownz
paul_ownz, wages of top football coaches are market driven. Wenger's wages are not exceptionally high. They are on a par with Ferguson and are lesser than what Ancelotti and Mourinho make. Complaining about Wenger's wage is like complaining about Fabregas's or RvP's wages - they are top footballers and their wages are market driven as are AW's wages. Ofcourse AW messed up by not being able to close a deal for a keeper in the summer. But thats like saying if Fabregas is below par for 3 games, he should be docked his wages.
Deltaforce
I couldnt delete my comment as wanted. It was a random observation which had no relation to the article or conversation. It just crossed my mind when thinking how frugal Wenger can be in the market & how financially astute he is that he is also the highest paid person at Arsenal.
paul_ownz
Fair enough Paul. AW could definitely have done better in securing a quality keeper. That said, overall he is a top manager who fully deserves his wage.
Deltaforce
delta, liked your post on complaints re AW's wages. I've seen on some blogs so much outrage over his wages - what's worse, there are some idiot gooners who are so ignorant of the facts that they claim he's the highest-paid manager in the PL, higher than even some of the top managers in the rest of Europe. They claim he earns more than Ferguson, he doesn't.
jaelle
If AW deserves whatever wages he gets as we're still overachieving for a club with our resources. Song seems to develop more of a wanderlust when Cesc is not playing, perhaps he needs Cesc's authority on the field to keep him in check. Our midfield balance has looked at it's best this season when we have Cesc, Wilshere and Song playing in the middle. I'm hoping we can have all 3 playing again on Sunday to give us a chance of winning.
bowiecokemirror
I think so far our most clinical finisher has been Vela ...he's Eduardoesque almost (before the broken leg) infront of goal, but on saying that he's lacking in many aspects aswell. If you could combine Vela + Walcott you'd have a supreme player. The fact of the matter is, every team is gonna have 1 or 2 or 3 absolute superstars, and RVP & Cesc are ours, they are the type's of players that can win games single handedly almost. Due to the fact we're never gonna get a whole season out of them, the rest of the players need to be good enough to win without.
FuiKaka
Agree with you there, FKK, as we may be without them on sunday and for most games. There is still speculation as to whether Almunia and Cesc shall play against Chelsea on Sunday, or not. It is my view that the starting team should know by Friday, so they can settle into focussing on the game. We do have a fairly well balanced squad and the other players (other than our "superstars") need to step up to the plate and make a name for themselves, come Sunday. I expect a good Drogba-slaying performance from Kos and someone must keep Malouda quiet.
Naijagunner
...that went well. Great. I copped an injury (right hand fracture) playing some footie and have been in a cast (POP) for about 2 weeks now; Doctor said to be off the keyboards for some time. This is my first attempt for a while and it is feeling good. Should be back playing about the same time Theo returns, I figure. Lol!
