The lineup is the one I predicted. I think the midfield combination of Rosicky and Wilshere will work well with the front 3 of Arshavin, Nasri, and van Persie.

Come on, lads!
Naijagunner
COME ON YOU GUNNERS!!! :D
GoonerLou
Well that should have been the CL final all over again. Not even close to offside. We can't complain about the ref's for the rest of the season now!
gunnerkid107
Oh dear oh dear oh dear, thanks Mr Linesman...!
GoonerLou
We can't complain about linesmen and we have to try and win by more than 1 goal now!
GoonerLou
oh dear.
foochan
Keep the faith, our team can score goals!
GoonerLou
I feel utterly sick. I knew this would happen :-((((((
julieloveshenry4ever
This looks like the sort of game for Nick to be honest...
GoonerLou
...And the captain has hurt himself. Good goal!

Great effort from Jack just before, he's carrying on from where he left off against Barca

i will marry you robin.
foochan
Bowyer's tough guy image is fading with all this rolling around, what a softy :)
ajwb
Thank heaven for that! More please :-)
julieloveshenry4ever
Rosicky has to make himself more useful or Bendtner comes in and Nasri goes central. For all his movement and vision he has been a bit soft to the touch and we can't afford to lose the ball too often. I feel the lads have overcome the early nerves now; it is time to show our quality. Arshavin will be a key figure in the 2nd half, you'd think.
Naijagunner
Ahhhh very scary stuff!
GoonerLou
Steady Gunners steady, play our game and we'll find a way through!
GoonerLou
Birmingham are playing excellent. They could easily be winning here. Credit to them. It's not often you'll here me say that.
gunnerkid107
We need Song and Rosicky to stay calm, like Jack really. Can't believe the boy's arguably the most composed one on the pitch! I can believe it actually.
GoonerLou
Oh is Robin ok?? :/ Think Nick will do well in a situation like this though. Just thought it'd be TR7 who'd come off for Nick. COME ON GUYS!
GoonerLou
What a strange, strange game...
GoonerLou
At least we've made Ben Foster play the game of his life now!
GoonerLou
no way

And there its gone

It's over!

The air kick that lost us the cup
ajwb
There's no coming back from this. Tired legs all over the place. We did miss Theo today.
Naijagunner
They really deserve it. I feel so so so sorry for Szczesny and Koscielny, they've done so well so far! Don't know if I'd blame the forwards who missed the chances, or Foster who made great saves, or Wenger who waited so long to make subs and take off Arshavin but left Rosicky on. I really don't know.
GoonerLou
nyuk nyuk nyuk!

Congratulations to Birmingham. Deserved it much more than us.
gunnerkid107
I'm really really fearing for the young players. What a blow. Feel sad not because of the result, but because we didn't play well and it's such a big blow to the team.
GoonerLou
oh dear, you got the blues

I feel sick and absolutely gutted, really don't want to go to work tomorrow amongst all the Birmingham fans. Well done Birmingham.
Dberg
Yep GoonerLou, we didn't play well and really failed to take hold of this game. I worry about the effect this is going to have on the rest of our season; almost like February/March deja vu for us. I do hope we are able to get the boys focused again, tough as that will be.
Naijagunner
Cruel blow for the team and Szczesny. In cup finals anything is possible and this was one of those unfortunate days for us. Birmingham showed just that little bit more of fight and big match temperament than we did and deserved their win. If it had gone to extra time our superior fitness may have won the game but it doesnt matter now.

Congrats to Brum indeed. They wanted it so much, played so well. They deserve the cup. As I said, I'm sad not because of the result, but it just wasn't an Arsenal-esque performance. Some of our players played the occasion. They played it as well as the game. I have confidence Szczesny will recover cos it's in his character, but I fear for Kos, he's seen some ups and downs, he has no time to dwell on this and has to pick himself up now.
GoonerLou
Well said Hudd, I agree with every. ha ha x100

MYGoon
Gooners, as a Chelsea fan for decades, I must admit that I enjoyed your defeat once again. You lack the steel, the courage, the committment to play winning football. Your defending is appalling and you havent had a serious keeper in yrs. You attack, attack, attack...and you fail, fail, fail. Sure, we are a bit down this yr...even tho we're not out. But once again, its Blue that prevails...but this time the Blue of Birm'ham. Breaks my heart. You ram your history down our throats but win nothing. Will you ever win a trophy again? I wonder...
blues first
Don't think we deserved to lose, but can't really say we deserved to win. The worrying this is that if we get to a major final, we'll have this mental block. That was our best chance to get over that. Shame for Szcesney and Koscielny, they don't deserve it, but you have to say at that level, at that stage of a final, you can't be making those kind of mistakes. Reckon we throw our eggs in the PL basket.
Gooner_Vin
He he. Upset more than just your good selves tonight, your team did. The Villa fans are arguably more speechless than you are. Bad luck, lads, but that's what terrifyingly bad defending, year on year, coupled with an endlessly mystifying refusal to invest in a top-class goalkeeper and a pair of reliable centre-backs gets you. Even Vermaelen was a conservative, relatively cheap buy. Luckily that one worked out, but so many others did not, and today, agonizingly close to ending that six-year hoodoo, Wenger's myopia finally came back to bite him splendidly on the arse.
DubaiSpur
Bottle jobs right
ajwb
Yeah the Arsenal we saw today didn't deserve to win this match, and hence the cup. Funny this 5h!te Arsenal team are way above Chelsea, Spuds and Villa eh? And we the sore losers put our hands up saying well played to Brum who really deserve this win, while you guys are so emotionally blaming the disappointing Arsenal team rather than giving credit to the winners?! I can't believe I, dealing with all this disappointment, still see the funny side of this situation.
GoonerLou
Once again you bottled it. A Wembley horror show if ever I saw one. It's over, you're *****ed.
Tony Rocky Horror
Agree Vin. Didn't think we deserved to win, but we did deserve to bring the game into extra time. Their pen claim(s) and our near chances and Foster's brilliant saves just about evened things out in 90 minutes. But with sort of mix-up at the back, we didn't deserve to win. Their fight, organisation, defensive maturity got them the win fair and square. Before the game of course I wanted to win desperately but I was even more afraid to lose because I knew full well what a huge blow it'd be. Now losing without a proper Arsenal performance is even more disappointing. I hate to look back on these things, but I don't think Wenger's timing and personnel of the substitutions helped. At this level every little mistake gets punished, so on balance it's only one more step on our learning curve.
GoonerLou
GoonerLou, did I insinuate that the whole team was rubbish? No, I did not. But having one of the best midfields and forward lines in Europe counts for absolutely nothing if the defence proves to be as spectacularly self-destructive as they have been tonight.

MY, do you really want to restart that 'weakened team' debate? At least when we beat your weakened team, we went on to win the damn thing...;)
DubaiSpur
We didn't play as well as we can but it was still a cruel way to lose. At least our season isn't over yet, we are still in contention for another three trophies. Hopefully the disappointment of today will make the players even more hungry to win trophies. There is no point crying over spilt milk, lets not dwell on this for too long and get behind the team for the rest of the season.

I was a bit unsure where all the Arsenal fans were at the final whistle, I guess they were queing up to see Tinkerbell, Pluto and Donald!!!
Born&BredSpur
Its no use, and to be honest, i would be surprised if it were otherwise. You've just lost a cup final, to Birmingham City, they of the relegation struggles, in the 90th minute after playing your strongest possible team while they paired an unconvincing Martin Jiranek with an increasingly pained Roger Johnson at the back. It hurts. I understand, and I sympathize. And really, despite it being Arsenal and all that, in all honesty? it was a horrible way to lose a final, shouldn't happen to anyone.
DubaiSpur
DubaiSpur, I didn't respond to your post. Nobody implied anybody 'insinuating' anything. Don't know what you're referring to when you seemed to imply someone's putting words into your mouth. So by the same token don't allege things that I didn't say. Eboue=God, come on let's not do the sour grapes thing. We wanted the cup having come to the final. We all knew what it'd mean to the young team. It's a small cup but a big step for the kids and we know it. Let's not belittle anything. It's just a disappointing performance but the way Kos and Szczesny, two of the better performers of late, lost it for us was tough for the kids. Well they just have to learn from it once again.
GoonerLou
A winning goal in the last minute for Brum!!! no one likes to see that mmmwwwhahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
springy
You lost the last time in WHL and lost the last time to Spurs in the league match in Arab Airlines Stadium. Remember, when you were way ahead at the half? Then you were wiped out in the second half at Emirates Arab Oil Stadium and lost the match?
spurs in brasil
Well done B'ham, shame on you, Arse. You deserved not to win. After all, this is the same competition your manager had forever disparaged. Except, he wasn't doing so this time, because you lot are frigging desperate, and we all know that desperation never bodes well. With the manner of your loss (the way you conceded the 2nd goal), you have put a jinx around yer necks, and you may not win anything for a looooooooooooong time. Furthermore, I fear you've done yourselves terrible psychological damage that your season may not recover. If last season is anything to go by, where you went out of all competitions, in quick succession, within 3 weeks, I think this season is well poised for another disintegration. We'll see how you go with Sunderland, before Barca. Ha ha ha ha ha ............
roforofo
Agree GoonerLou..but when will the learning process bear fruit I honestly fear of not knowing..
MYGoon
We're 2nd in the league with 9 pts more than you. Have a goal difference of +30 as compared to your meagre +7. Have gone much further than you guys in both domestic cups. And we're the Arsenal. You're Sp*rs
Eboue=GOD
Credit to Birmingham. A fair game and a good game of football. Sad to see it settled by a howler from two of our lads.
Eboue=GOD
We didn't perform well but didn't deserve to lose the game in such circumstances either, agree with Dubai on that. Don't think the boys deserve to be laughed at either. But we know there're always some fans who take pleasure in our failings. In fact as I'm calming down, I think we did rather well in some spells in the second half but we started playing well too late and some of the subs came too late to salvage the game. I'm not even sure if this loss necessarily means horrible weaknesses at the back, yada yada yada. These are the guys who kept Barcelona at bay long enough to beat them. Some glaring mistakes, sure, but I'm not ready to draw those conclusions like 'buying cheap defenders necessarily = they're inferior to English defenders'. Just as cliched as 'Arsenal defence not good enough' imho. Strangely, I'm feeling slightly better and more optimistic about the future lol..
GoonerLou
GL, I tend to agree. These kind of moments take place and we just have to suck it up and come back up again. Howlers like these do happen and instead of pointing fingers at Kos or Szczez I think(like fans in some quarters have) I think we need to get behind this team. Because this is probably the best squad in the league and I do think we have a mighty big chance of winning at least one of the major competitions. The team needs us and I for one would be behind every single player throughout. Not point fingers at one guy. The team wins as a team and loses as a team. Not as one single player. And some fans should know better than to single out one of the players.
Eboue=GOD
In fact despite the manner of roforofo rubbing it in, I rather share the same opinion of fearing for the team because of the schoolboy nature of the error that cost us the game. It's indeed tough to recover from this. But I think - just my personal opinion - it won't be as bad as the Brum game 3 years ago. We can recover faster this time, but how much faster, I honestly don't know.
GoonerLou
roforofo is right. That second goal by Birmingham was truly a classic of blundering in the defensive box. Classic Curley. A classic nyuk nyuk nyuk! moment.

Indeed, the match-going Gooners will play a crucial crucial role in picking the team up now. First thing, they have to pick themselves up, and I hope they first show a bit of steel and defiance that we so want the team to show. These boys are such a great group of players, we can't let the team fall apart over the smallest cup. Must keep going for the bigger pots (despite the higher pressure) now!
GoonerLou
A pratfall worthy of Buster Keaton.

To call this a school boy blunder is to insult all school boys.
spurs in brasil
Alex if you read my posts above, you'll see I don't deserve your 'LMAO'. The Brum fans deserve every bit of joy they're having now. The nature of the loss is embarrassing and cruel to the 2 players involved who've been performing well of late. But the cup run certainly does us proud and the team or Gooners on here don't deserve to be laughed at. It's a below-par performance of a still maturing team, but to say it's an 'embarrassment' would be hugely unfair to both Birmingham and Arsenal.
GoonerLou
That blunder is the reason big teams rely on experienced players and ESPECIALLY experienced goal keepers (personally I though it was Koscielny's fault mostly)...Wenger deserves all the potential hate he gets from fans for being so stubborn with his "philosophy"
unknown2022
Hmm why is EVERYONE on the TV (including Arsene) blaming the Keeper ? Koscielny YET again was the culprit & the reason for your loss. Koscielny completely got in the way of Szczesny's vision only to NOT clear the ball & leave it to bounce off your Keeper into the path of Martins. Szczesny is an awesome young Keeper & has the potential to be your No. 1 for 15+ yrs, the same can't be said about calamity Koscielny can it ? He is truly dodgy, don't get me wrong I love the muppet as he's doing a fantastic job ! I just find it hard to believe Arsene signed him... It was also quite funny watching Arsene's post match interview. But Im not here to gloat at your inability to win another trophy, just ask WHY is Koscielny not being blamed yet Szczesny is ??? He's the ONLY decent Keeper you have & if the likes of your Manager publicly blame him for your loss then it'll cost you 1 of the best young keepers the PL has ever seen. Still if you don't want him we'll GLADLY take him off your hands, & if you do it on a free we can call it quits re: Sol.... Though the signing of Gallas has been a very welcome addition the signing of Szczesny would do very nicely to fully repay the £20M debt ;-P
True Spurs Supporter
To say it's an embarrassment would be true, GoonerLou, and that's not unfair to Birmingham nor to Arsenic. Truly embarrassing to let in a goal like that. It was an error of mythic proportions that merits having one's liver eaten for all eternity by vultures while chained to a rock.
spurs in brasil
In this case CB stands not for center back but for complete blunder.
spurs in brasil
Arsenic Whinger blaming the blunder on his goal keeper also rates as an embarrassing blunder.
spurs in brasil
The silence of the Gooner supporters is deafening.
spurs in brasil
Oh do me a favour love! I did say the blunder was embarrassing, school boy, etc. I said the cup run isn't embarrassing, the team isn't. What's so tough for anyone to understand? If anyone's mind is clouded, it should be me right? lol The TV here didn't show the Wenger interview, will look for it. Maybe he thought Szczesny should have called out for the keeper's ball and he didn't? But Kos did get in the way and it's a mistake, no question. The more I think about it, the players should be even angrier now. Not sure if that sort of emotion could be channelled into that desperate hunger we need.
GoonerLou
I hate loud mouth Arsenal scum, i put up with their loud mouths at work every day, all of them are passengers that never even go to matches, *****ers and u deserve it.

GoonerLou, for what it's worth, Wenger never put blame on the keeper. An excerpt below: on the late goal... I am bitterly disappointed, like the whole team. We had some problems to start the game, the number of games we played caught up a little bit on us. It took us a while to get into the rhythm and pace of the game. In the second half we were on top, unfortunately we couldn’t score the second goal and, in the end, we made a mistake that left us no time at all to respond. We were preparing to play extra time. on Birmingham... Congratulations to Birmingham, they took advantage of the mistake [and] they took the trophy which hurts us tremendously. We have to be proud of our attitude, continue with our belief, pick ourselves up and face the other challenges we have. The team is very disappointed and we will face a lot of questions after that mistake tonight but we have to be strong enough to stand up. It is a good opportunity to show that we have the mental strength to respond to the situation like that. on his view of the winner… It was a lack of communication, determination a little bit as well. Like always, when the ball is in no-man's land, someone has to take responsibility and go for it. What was amazing [was that] no-one was going for the ball from Birmingham. on the mood in the dressing room… Both of them [Koscielny and Szczesny] are destroyed. I don’t think it’s a good moment for me to add anything. We have to lift them up again and help them, that is what a team is about. That is part of the game, we had enough chances to kill the game off before. They could only be dangerous, in the end, on free kicks. Maybe we were a bit nervous on it as well. Didn't see what Lying spud supporter heard/saw to come on here and spout rubbish.
Naijagunner
lou if you're proud of losing the mickey mouse cup to Brum, that is a sad indictment on your team.

Yeah I saw the transcript of his post-match interview on arsenal.com. In the circumstances he said what he could really. We all know the cup itself isn't the thing. It's all in the players' heads. Huge task on the manager's hands now.

Jackstan are you 'proud of' putting words into my mouth? :)

Just back from Wembley and that really was a gutting way to lose. You have to think Szczesny gave a shout there, so should probably take more blame than Kos. but really it's all a moot point now. I'm just glad Almunia didn't make that error because he'd be in a box by now if he had! It's very sad that this team just cannot function without Fabregas. For all the deserved plaudits Nasri is receiving, it's clear to see that Cesc is numero uno by a long, long way. Fair play to Brum, they put a lot into that and it's their day. We just have to put the navel gazing to one side, ignore the taunts and get behind the team again on Wednesday. Still some silverware in this season but we all have to show some bottle and not self pity. Fans and players.

Koscielny and Szczezny are just the latest versions of Pascal Cygan and Manuel Almunia. NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BE PLAYING FOR ARSENAL. Clichy is also not much better - played Villa onside as well as Bowyer in the 2nd minute and cannot cross a ball for peanuts. And Wenger proved his insanity by taking off the 2 players who combine for our goal while it was still 1-1???? Nasri and Jack are the two who can hold their heads up.

You know its rough to be a Gooner when they're looking at the Spurs reserves 1-4 Arsenal reserves match. Wonder if they got a trophy for beating our reserves...

Do you not think the fact that van Persie was injured and asked to come off might have been a factor in his substitution?

Plus, Arshavin was knackered and looked like he wanted to come off.

The hate filled impotent rage of opposition fans shouldn't faze us one bit. This is a crushing loss but the overall vision and set up of the team with a few changes will continue to set us for a bright future going forward. Questions on big match temperament will continue to be asked till the team answers those questions emphatically. The media storm that is brewing now against the club needs to be weathered with the co-operation of fans who still believe in the team. Onwards and upwards.

Arshavin should have come off earlier if anything. He did very well with the goal, but in a one off final, there's not much place for his "oh look at me, I'm a mercurial lazy genius" schtick. Clichy was on a yellow card and was doubled up on on the right time and again and with a yellow card hanging over him, it made it very difficult for Clichy. That was purely down to Arshavin's laziness. There's no excuse for standing and watching as 34 year old Stephen Carr gallops past you again and again. A spectacular fall in grace for Arshavin who was undropppable a year ago, now he can only be considered an impact player at the most.
Little Dutch
Arshavin was the player he has always been individually talented, gifted even but knows little about how to play football other than in his direct 'jumpers for goalposts' understanding of the game. It can often be effective but comes at a cost. There're games where it works better than others but looking for him to regain a form he has never really displayed is a waste to time. What we see now is the form he has always had.
Amos.
