Arsenal to go to China in July

Arsenal to go to China in July

Since Arsenal's trip to Malaysia and Thailand in 1999, apart from some young Guns' appearances in Hong Kong, Gooners in this part of the world have not had the good fortune of watching the Gunners in Asia.

That is about to change this summer, with Arsene Wenger finally agreeing to spend part of their pre-season programme in Asia. According to the club's official Chinese website, the Gunners will visit Malaysia on 11th July, fly to Hangzhou, China, on 14th July, take part in a training session that will be open to fans on 15th and play a friendly against local team Hangzhou Nabel Greentown FC on 16th at a 35,000-seat stadium. This will be the Gunners' first trip to China since the visit of the likes of Tony Adams and David Seaman in May 1995.

According to the same website, Tom Fox, the club's commercial director, is due to announce the team's Asian tour at a press conference in Hangzhou, China, on 26th May. One interesting thing in this article that caught my eye - apart from the timing of this announcement ahead of the official global website - is that all first-team squad members on the books before 1st July are obliged to go on this tour, with the possible exceptions of the injured ones and those who will have taken part in the Euro U-21 Championship in June.

The organiser reveals that tickets will be made available in early June. The lowest price will be ¥300, or £28 approximately.

Honestly I feel the local partner that brings the team in might have jumped the gun a little bit here, let alone revealing so many details about the tour. This is the official Chinese website and I wonder how much control the club's PR people have over this sort of stuff. Haven't seen any English reports on this yet. But I thought I should let all of you know.

Well it's only fair we should have an exchange. After all we've had the Chinese State circus, and now we get to give them The Islington All clown Allstars. Laugh raucously at their comedy set piece routines. Applaud wildly as they pass sideways for 10 mins then do it all again for another 15. Watch agog as the ringleader Billy not so Smart flays himself with his own whip for 90 minutes on the touchlinekicking over custard pies, gasp as the comedy car falls apart (february performances only).

Inevitable it was going to happen at some stage. With it being in July it shouldn't have any knock on effect whatsoever to the new season. Lou, the club haven't had a great PR handle on this. ESPN has already advertised it has the rights to the games, AW confirmed in a press conference a few weeks back that we'd do this.

I don't think it's Arsene's style to go on an overseas. He prefers training in countries like Austria etc. I think the added pressure to generate more income is the sole factor in this decision being taken up. Anyway Gooner fans in China will enjoy. I'm hoping there will be a tour of India once.

I'm sure overseas tours will become the norm. It's one more source of revenue that Arsenal can't ignore while the other big clubs take advantage. No more holidays in Austria . . . On a slightly related note, the Emirates Cup has its weakest line-up ever, but it will be interesting to see Arsenal play Boca Juniors, and Red Bulls to a lesser degree- MLS is not very good, but they have Henry, Rafa Marquez and Dwayne De Rosario, and will be in mid-season form so it could be better than you'd expect.

Sajit - I can't see it being too long, especially with Kronke now pulling the strings. Maybe we'll get to play against the Boston Red Sox .... we might be able to win a game then!

I assume this won’t clash with the CL qualification round seeing as we could well be part of it.
