Arsenal Sign Alvarez ........ Apparently

The president of Serie A side, Palermo, claims his club have been beaten to the signing of Argentine player, Ricardo Alvarez by the mighty Gunners.

Maurizio Zamparini claimed he thought his team were in with a decent shout of signing Alvarez from Vélez Sársfield only to be pipped by Arsene Wenger`s Arsenal.

'We did have a concrete bid for Alvarez and had him in our grasp back in January,' he told Radio Kiss Kiss.

'Unfortunately, we didn't complete the move in time, so we lost him to Arsenal. At this moment he has already signed for the Gunners.'

If this turns out to be true I can`t be sure how I feel about it, as I know little, to eff all about this player. You keep seeing "highly rated" plastered about everywhere, but they said that about Francis Jeffers, so if and when this materialises, I`ll reserve my opinion for when I see him play.

In the mean time if any VA members have the skinny on Alvarez, please do post your thoughts in the comments section. Ta.

The Palermo president is pretty fast and loose with the truth. He told two different radio stations two different things. He told one we'd signed him and the other we were interested. Zamparini is a bit of a character.

Lost in translation ... or just a bit of a tool? Either way, whether this happens or not I'm not going to mind.
Nah, legit quotes. Just both said a slightly different thing. Whatever, it's almost certain we're in for him. It's just a case of whether we're certain to sign him I'd say.

I see posts in our forums from a couple of days ago saying there were rumours we'd already signed him. Looks like there might be some smoke to go with the fire. Anyone know what sort of player he is?
Or fire to go with the smoke even ... lol
Rosicky replacement i think
Someone unknown? Yay, business as usual!
I've seen him play in the copa libertadores where Velez had a pretty decent run in the competition and also won the Clausura(domestic league..kinda).Quite a good dribbler/close and control he looked sound technically and physically but not much of a sprinter,so i doubt he will play on the wings. He didnt stand out and strike me has a perfect Wengerball player but having seen Ricky play more im sure he will be a positive signing.
Finally............. you guys bought someone ... btw who is he?
Hehe, typical Wenger transfer.
Oh and can we have Nasri now? :P
I can see him replacing Arshavin. I've only seen a few clips of him on youtube but he seems to be quick, strong and a good dribbler but very left footed... reminds me a bit of Giggs. I can see him playing on the left side of a front three with with RVP in the middle and maybe Gervinho or Walcott on the right. Maybe 3 out of Ramsey, Wilshere, Song, Cesc and Nasri in midfield behind them. I know everyone is keen on us signing defenders but I think attacking players are a greater priority. We really strugged to break down even weak teams towards the end of the season. RVP was the only player scoring for us. Arshavin and Bendtner were both poor and I think they may both get shipped out along with Denilson, Almunia, Clichy and Eboue. Our defence will improve this season even without any major additions as we will hopefully have Vermaelen fit and Koscielny will have settled in a bit more. I still wouldn't mind another centre back to replace Squillachi and a left back to replace Clichy tho.
TFno7, fantasies rarely come true do they? :-) ajwb and bowiecokemirror have good points. The media is calling Alvarez a Fabregas replacement which is nonsense. If the news is true, he will probably start by being a squad player or an impact sub before getting a shot at the first 11.
Its still a strange signing i think. He's not even the best player at Velez, obviously Wenger seems something.Dunno where he will play though, not a winger for the PL standard thats why i think he will replace Rosicky and Denilson if they both leave.
We did have trouble opening up defenses towards the end of the season. Perhaps Wenger intends to use his famed dribbling and shooting skills for just such a time/games. Pity he isn't Brazilian; then, Jaelle could be relied upon to give us the 411 on him.
And now Inter are apparently about to hijack the deal for someone who's already an Arsenal player :S Zamparini is talking crap again we can take it.
Cant see us paying upwards of 12 million pounds on a squad player with one year remaining on his contract. Alvarez may have been on our list of players to buy but this deal doesn't look like it will happen.
What happened to that brazilian lad Wellington you got from fluminese? Heard he was tipped for a bright future.
