Transfer Guff - Cahill, Cesc, Gervinho & Italians

Transfer Guff - Cahill, Cesc, Gervinho & Italians

Despite airing my frustrations about our lack of signings in my previous article, there are still a heck of a lot of speculation surrounding players who could be joining or leaving Arsenal.

Now while I`m of the ilk who never believes any rumour till I see a player holding an Arsenal shirt, or another team's scarf, I still feel it`s necessary to bring you the rumours to discuss them all in one place.

So let`s start with the hot topic of the much needed centre back, The Telegraph tells us that Wenger is closing in on Bolton`s Gary Cahill in an attempt to bolster our very shaky defensive line (especially at set pieces don`t you know!). Cahill is a great player, however his nationality will mean spending more than he`s worth, but like I said, we shouldn't be bothered too much about prices this summer, identify our top targets then go out and get them …. Within reason of course.

Next up is the Gervinho saga (it really wouldn't be an Arsenal summer without a long running transfer saga would it?), sources now saying that the Lille forward should be signing on the dotted line any day now.

Another topic never too far away from the lips of Arsenal fans is that of the goalkeeping position, well flimsy sources link us with a move for Inter Milan`s Emiliano Viviano .

Real Madrid apparently lodged a massive £45 Million bid for Captain Cesc. If we`re serious about selling Fabregas, and I think we might be, then even though we know Fabregas has no intention of joining Real Madrid, we should accept the offer to show Barcelona we`re willing to deal at the right price. I don`t think agreeing a the fee with Real would effect any relationships between club, player or fans. We know he wants to leave, he knows he wants Barca, he knows we want a fair price.

That about wraps up the transfer guff for today.

According to a number of pieces, the Arsenal board are in 'advanced' negotiations with Jagielka and Everton. I can't see Wenger buying 2 centre halves. I'd have Jagielka over Cahill; he might be older, but he's a leader and he can pass better too.

According to Arsenal Action there will be a medical happening today at London Colney, not sure how reliable Arsenal Action are.

I think I'd like Jagielka more also. But that said Cahill wouldn't be the worst signing we've ever made.

If only signing players was as easy as Football Manager!!! Realistically the PJ rumours have been around for 4 months now, and it's widely accepted that we tried for him last summer. He could double bank as our reserve goalkeeper too! ;-)

I think Arsene is determined to only sign centre half's that I can't spell! Hence no Samba or Cahill.

LOL - Vert true Dave, I took a degree in spelling our current centre back's names ..... and still often get them wrong (Also note the spelling mistake in our current poll ... lol)

Is anyone else quite despondent about the goings-on this Summer so far? The players we want moved on aren't leaving and the players we want to keep want to go. It struck me this morning that we have no real chance of winning the CL with Barca and Real involved, and are unlikely to win the PL or FA Cup with the likes of Chelsea and Man Utd also taking those trophies seriously. So not a lot to look forward to. Then put yourself in the players' position: if you had a chance to join a club that doesn't pay the very top wages and you have no real chance of winning anything, or the chance of earning the top wages and an actual chance of winning the big prizes, where would you want to go? For the first time in several seasons I'm pessismistic of our chances of finishing in the top 4. I feel we'll be fighting Liverpool and Spuds for 4th. Sigh...

It has to be Gervinho having the medical today.I think we'll have to wait for who we bring in at the back...or is it asking too much to switch on SSN on friday morning and see the yellow ticker displaying 'Arsenal sign Jagielka & Gervinho'.What a start to pre-season that would be : )
29/06/2011 12:42:00
It would be a good start ajwb ... I still think we need a little more though, especially if we're to lose either Nas ot Cesc, or worse, both!
