Clichy Completes Man City Move

So we`ve suffered our first departure of the season, Gael Clichy has swapped North London for Manchester as he switches to rival club Manchester City.

The move has been on the cards for a while after Gael refused to sign a couple of fresh contracts handed to him over the summer.

Whilst some saw Clichy as a bit careless at times he was the last remaining member of the invincibles squad, and our first choice left back.

'I am really happy to be joining such a great club,' he told City's official website.

'I hope I can add to the quality we already have here because we have a fantastic squad who I believe will continue to get better. I can't wait to get started and I think anything is possible with this team.'

I`d usually take this opportunity to wish a player, who was a great member of our squad, good luck at his new club, but seeing as he joined the team that finished one place above us last season, I wish him all the misery in the world at his new club.

Sad to see him go, hopefully he will be the only first-teamer to depart. Best of luck Clichy, just as long you have your customary brain fart against us :-)

i thought he was a true gooner.... just shows how down hill we have gone. granted, he isnt the best defender and gets caught out far too often but Gibbs isnt ready, Traore has never proven himself, and Jenekison or whatever his name is doesnt have any experience..... worrying worrying times

Guys, I'm a blue and have only seen him play a couple of times, I know he's been a regular for your lot, but just wondered how highly, or lowly you actually rate him?

good player, good going forward, cant cross and gets caught behind too easily.... think if it is 7m its a good bit of business for you, will add to the squad but i don't think hes the best defensively.... will need your centre backs to cover

I'm just happy to have a LB with a bit of pace, can see us rotating hime and Kolorov in the PL and CL. Has Wenger finally hit the wall with you guys, or do you think the purse strings are about to open? Lot of players being linked away, same as us...

As a City fan I rerally hope you get Cahill he will fit into your recent tradition (since Graham's unbreachables) of defenders perfectly - slow, turning circle of the Queen Mary, Error prone etc.

Personally I don't think it's much of a lose, I'm much more worried about loosing Cesc/Samir at the moment.

I don't really care that Clichy left, it's what Wenger is going to do with his position that I'm nervous about.

Very charitable wishing the last of your "invincibles" all the misery in the world, even if it was meant to be tongue in cheek. One day you gooners might wake up and realise the world doesn't revolve around Arsenal.

FCB - It may have escape your attention that this is an Arsenal site for Arsenal fans, in a footballing sense the world, on this site at least, very much revolves around Arsenal, just as it revolves around Man City at VMC, or Chelsea at VC, it would be pointless for it not to. Why would I wish Clichy well at a club that we are in direct competition with? Clichy was well supported at Arsenal, but now he doesn't play for us anymore, his happiness is not our concern.

18 million for Coentrao could do the trick. But Wenger needs to open up those purse strings! You guys are making a huge profit, why aren't you spending?

JT_D, there will be spending this summer. Only that the buys will be in the Arsenal range - 10-15 million rather than the Chelsea or City range.

What about the U*d or the Liverpool range Delta? Or even the Villa range? No, too stubborn and miserly, yet you Arsenal fans still get ripped off more than any other for your season tickets, tut tut, where is all that money going?

I see a lot of you are not sad over this departure and you should not be. He was one of the weak links in your defense. What makes it sad is Gibbs is worse and has to decide whether he will play football or get a degree in medicine. You can take the cash from Clichy sale plus internal cash and purchase Leighton Baines who was close to a move to Bayern Munich last season. I believe the price offered was 10mm pounds by Bayern last season. That is in the Arsenal range DF.

I agree with alot of these comments, and feel that although Gibbs is going to be a good player in my opinion that we cannot solely rely on him as our first choice LB, I think Baines would be a great buy for 10m too!

Bluedub, yours was a public subsidy funded stadium as your club was nowhere as big or foresighted. Cant compare the financial models of the two stadiums as a result. A privately funded stadium would obviously cost more for fans. Hope you understood.

KF, I am for one sad about Clichy's departure but understand that separate ways was the hard choice to be made. With regard to Baines his valuation is likely to be higher than 15 million pounds knowing that he is English and that Everton are very tough negotiators. More like 20 million after the very good season that Baines has had.

The problem is 20mm is a figure that will be quoted for Baines and probably Cissokho. A range of 15 - 20mm will be quoted for a left back looking to fill the void left by Clichy. Cissokho did cost Lyon 15mm Euros. Not sure of Enrique's fit to the Arsenal with the kind of attackers (forwards who like to cut in and will need fullbacks who overlap) you have at your disposal. Wenger has been molding attacking fullbacks since Ashley Cole and Enrique is not known for his attacking prowess, but good defensively. Maybe a cheap option for you guys, but may not be fit and knowing Newcastle, they will hike his price up too. Maybe Michel Bastos who was very good for the Brazil squad as a left back. I hear Juventus have agreed a 13.4 million fee, but then Chelsea may be involved too. There is a reason you have Steve Rowley there.

Good points KF. Cissokho is a superior option to Enrique but will cost almost as much as the Arsenal transfer record which the manager may be reluctant to pay. Another fine LB who will be feeling out of the cold lately is Marcelo of Real Madrid. Fabio Coentrao would be expected to start games for Madrid after they paid 30 million euros and one wonders where that leaves Marcelo.

With Jose as our former manager and his rule of two world class players for each position, I don't think Marcelo is going anywhere. They are even people who believe Fabio will be played as a right back while Sergio Ramos is pushed to the CB position while Marcelo retains the LB position. But we will see.

Skysports have also linked us with Nasri DF. Some people see it as a bargain, but it seems like a bargain relative to what you compare it with. I was looking at it relative to the player Arsene Wenger is replacing him with in probably Gervinho from the same league as Sami Nasri. Gervinho will be joining Arsenal for 10.7million and probably half of the wages. Then if you compare the stats from two of them: 1.) Sami Nasri scored 9 goals from open play, 1 penalty goal and 1 assist in 30 games in the EPL. ( His record in all competitions last year was 16 goals, 4 assists in 52 games. ( 2.) Gervinho from Lille scored 15 goals and 9 assists in 35 games for Lille. ( He didn't play in any other competition. If you go further and compare the seasons before this, you will see Gervinho has been the more productive player. 1.) 2009/2010 season: Sami Nasri scored 5 goals and 4 assists in 34 games of which he started 29 games. Gervinho on the other hand scored 13 goals and 4 assists in 32 games of which he started 28 games. 2.) In 2008/2010 season (Excluding Intl.). Sami Nasri scored 6 goals and 5 assists in 43 games of which he started 40 games. Gervinho on the other hand 6 goals and 3 assists in 33 games. The two players are the same age from the same league. Of course, we can say Nasri is more EPL proven but so is Torres so you can't really predict with a 100% certainty that he will adjust to his new team compared to Gervinho. Both also have 1 year left on their contracts and Gervinho has been the more productive player for the past 3 seasons. For now, it seems Arsene Wenger is getting the better deal, but the performance in the future will tell.

KF, while its true that Gervinho could play as a replacement for Nasri on the left wing it would still be a setback if Nasri left. He has adapted well to the premier league now and has seemingly got over some chronic injury problems. At 20 million he would still be a bargain for rival teams and I think Wenger will do his utmost to convince him to stay. If a suitable offer from abroad comes in, Nasri may leave.

You don't believe he will still leave or it is just press hogwash.

The way it looks there is a greater chance of Nasri leaving the club than staying. Definitely not all press hogwash, especially Nasri's own last interview where he makes the kind of ambiguous statements players make before signing for big money elsewhere.
