Loew Gives Mertesacker Day Off To Sign For Us

German national team manager, Joachim Loew has revealed how he gave Pers Mertesacker the day off to complete his transfer to Arsenal.

It has emerged today that the Gunners are looking to bolster their defence with the 6 foot 6 Werder Bremen centre back.

Loew`s comments will only add fuel to an already fierce fire.

'On Monday evening, Per called me in my room to tell me he had an offer, I gave him the day off and am awaiting his return this evening, the remainder is the business of the club.'

It`s been reported that Mertesacker has traveled to London today to complete the signing.

Excellent buy. Much rather have him than Jagielka/samba or Cahill. 26 years old and 70 odd caps for Germany for prolly half the money Cahill would have cost. A bit slow but put him with Kozzer or Verm and they will compensate for that. Can anyone see us being bullied at set pieces with the two of them.....given we start practicing defending the damn things.

Mertesacker is EXACTLY what Arsenal need, and players from the Bundesliga usually don't have much of a settling in period either - just makes you wonder why you didn't attempt to sign him much earlier in the window...

I'd rather have Cahill, to be honest, we need Premiership experience. But I have seen Mertesacker in action for Germany, and he is a really good, solid defender. From a defense perspective, the issue is about personnel AND coaching, and the lack of coaching is a bigger issue IMO. I'm curious to see how that is resolved.

Big wages apparently but I'd like to think he'd be used on a rotation basis; so that he plays at Stoke, Blackburn and the other ***** northern cloggers but Koscielny is given the nod against sides with quicker strikers. A very good signing. Cahill may be a more natural fit for Arsenal but at £10m less and with 75 caps, Mertesacker is probably the better deal. Great to see us finally making a move. Why these never happened six weeks ago, I've no idea. UTA.

Tony Adams was slow mover but man could he lead AND read the game. From what I hear Merts is an excellent reader of the game and that along with his experience elevates him well above Cahill and I do rate Cahill.

At least signings are being made. Do we think any more will? Just thinking that surely time has run out for any marque signings with medicals etc needing to be done and players being at internationals?
