Arsene Has Faith In Mertesacker

Arsene Wenger has said that he believes that Per Mertesacker will follow the likes of Tony Adams, Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure and go down in Arsenal folklore.

Speaking to Sky Sports Wenger acknowledged that Mertesacker hadn't quite hit the ground running yet since his move from Werder Bremen, but he believes his impact will come as he adjusts to the league.

'He is a little bit like that, (Adams) not the quickest, but he uses his brain well. Mertesacker is getting stronger in every single game. He is getting more aggressive, I like him personally. He's a very intelligent player and will be a big asset for us. Trust the Germans, he is a fighter.'

Wenger also adds that he's perfectly happy with what he has been seeing from all his summer signings, not just Per, but the results are completely different.

I agree with Wenger. Mertesacker was thrown in the deep end and has had to adapt to the pace of the Premier League in games that counted. Each game he's getting a bit better now that he's settling in and while he made a couple of mistakes against Sunderland, his positioning is better and he's winning everything in the air. You don't become a regular starter on a well drilled Germany team by being a bum. Our defenders just have to start working on playing as a unit so the qualities of each make up for the deficiencies of each.

will have to keep an eye out for him, not paid much attention to date. High praise from Wenger, or does it put too much pressure on the guy!?
