'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Vermaelen Secures New Deal

Thomas Vermaelen has secured himself a new contract and heard Arsene Wenger describe him as a leader of the Arsenal defence for years to come.

Speaking to arsenal.com Wenger said.

'It is a privilege to play for Arsenal and many players understand that. On our side we are happy to extend his contract because he has shown he has the quality to play for us. He is a leader, he is versatile too. Thomas is a young boy as well, people forget. If you take Djourou, Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen, they are all 25 or 26 years old so as centre backs they have ten years in front of them.'
