Andre Arshavin Named In Reserves Squad

Andre Arshavin has been named to play in the reserves team against Norwich City as presumably the manager looks to give him a kick up the rump in an aid to help the little Russian rekindle some form.

Arshavin has been horribly out of form since … well … probably since he arrived and helped us qualify for the Champions League. But more than that, his confidence is low as the Russian captain can`t seem to do much right these days.

I`m not sure whether this decision will be a help him regain form or go even further to crushing his spirit.

Interesting! Perhaps there's more to it? Sent to sit in the reserves until a summer move?
damiano_tommassi
Chamakh, Benayoun and Park also selected. Wonder too whether that's punitive or whether he just wants to give them playing time. We've got something like 14 games in 12 weeks now so not much left of the season!
Little Dutch
Ah, they're in the ressies too? Benayoun makes it interesting - if it were just the other three, you could argue they're either being given a rollocking or being written-off to rot. But Benyaoun's in there too... that says 'playing time' to me.
Looking forward to the season ending... Can't take too many more false dawns!
damiano_tommassi
Err, when did we have a false dawn this season, DT? Lol.. Its been one long nightmare.. interrupted with an odd win at Chelsea.. =D
Sajit
That's the one, Sajit! That and 'Wilshere will be back in February'.
damiano_tommassi
I still like Asrhavin, he's lost his confidence, his form and is never played in his most effective position but he's a decent guy who is always honest about his and the teams performances. I wish things had worked out better for him. Real shame.
Professor Calculus
I agree Prof. Somehow, I wish Arshavin has a few good games before the season end, at least, there will be some more good memories of his time at Arsenal. A shame that it hasn't worked out.
prits
Think Park has already played a couple in the ressies already no? as for the others they do badly need playing time to keep up some semblance of match fitness and they will likely be needed at some stage before the end of the season. Seems unlikely that it's part of a dressing down as Chamakh and Benny have played little to no part since January anyway. Either way I can't see any of these 4 still being with us after this summer, but then I say that about half the squad at collapsetime (TM AFC) every year.

It should be for playing time, or at least, the players should take it as such. What's the use sitting on the bench for the first team when you can be of use to the younger lads in the reserves. Arshavin will make the best of it and I am sure it will give players like Afobe and Miguel some joy to have them play with them. One thing though, Miguel is listed as Captain. Can that be right?
Naijagunner
Cant help thinking that Arshavin is just a victim of the manner in which we've been playing. In style and stature he reminds me of Overmars, but whereas the flying dutchman was part of a rapid counter-attacking team our pocket russian is being asked to dribble through massed defences, and it doesn't suit him. Arsahvin was at his most effective when we were on the back foot up at Liverpool, breaking at speed from the back.
Wyn Mills
It turns out the game with the reserves v Norwich saw goals from the 1st teamers. Arshavin's two goals can only do him good as he struggles for form. Good work-out for the team.
Naijagunner
Wyn, you make a fair point - a friend of mine was trying to excuse as 'he's adjusting to the premier league, and some players just can't'. But when a player THAT good can't make a simple five yard pass, it's got to be more than that.
damiano_tommassi
Play arseshaving on sunday please.
Himwhatwhats
Only if you promise to play your mighty £14m Russian, Roman Pavyluchenko... Oh wait.
damiano_tommassi
:) they could walk around the touchline sulking together eh.
Himwhatwhats
The only time i'd use the word mighty for pav is if it's followed by over-rated.
Himwhatwhats
Still don't understand why neither of them - or Shevchenko and Rebrov, for that matter - can play in England. Very odd.
damiano_tommassi
Not many russian players have been particularly successful in England, that's true. What happened to Yuri Zirkhov?
Wyn Mills
Went to that Russian lottery-winning side, Machakalakakavaka, didn't he?
damiano_tommassi
Great see Afobe back really like the look of the kid
Van Persie
You'd think russian players wuold do ok here. I get it that most south american players go to the continent, as the climat and langage are the same...for the most part. in the same way most scandinavian players settle here ok, i'd have put russians in the same group as the scandinavians so can't see why it doesn't work out for them. Maybe it's not cold enough?
Himwhatwhats
Kanchelskis..he did ok.
Himwhatwhats
Hands up if you're a Cardiff fan after the derby? i know i am :)
Himwhatwhats
No ox' in the England squad. You guys have to be happy with that surely? I'd be happy if no tottenham players were named for a friendly, two thirds of the way through the season.
Himwhatwhats
yeah, Ox has decades in front of him, he doesn't need tarnishing just yet!
damiano_tommassi
Wow... I didnt see this coming.. What a joke to sell him now.. ***** off Gazidis
Sajit
Its the worse possible timing you could imagine? Who the hell have we got in charge in the board room? A closet spurs fan?
