Anyone Else Feel Sick?
I don`t think I stand alone when I say I`m not a fan of North London Derby day.
Arsenal vs. Tottenham is probably the best derby match in English football. Whilst most derbies are over-hyped, cagey affairs, the NLD rarely disappoints in terms of action. However, for me personally, the feeling of tension far outweighs any possible enjoyment I can garner from this fixture.
Sure, like everyone else, I go mental when we score, and when we win, but ultimately, the overwhelming feeling is one of relief. Relief that the fixture is over, and we came through it unscathed. And that for a few more months at least, we don`t need to suffer that sickly feeling in our stomachs.
This year however, that feeling of nausea has been multiplied tenfold. Spurs are having their best season in living memory, whilst we, a mere two places below them, are having our worst.
The North London derby today takes on extra meaning, not only is it NLD, not only is it another 3 points to win or lose, not only is it a chance to take back 4th place from Chelsea, but this game becomes our last chance to mount a charge to try and topple Spurs.
If we lose today then there is no chance we can catch Tottenham, and whilst it`s true that even if we win it would still be unlikely, the mounted pressure we put on them as they undertake a number of tricky fixtures could prove vital.
We must win today, for all the reasons listed, but most of all, so I can stop feeling ill.
So this is what it feels like to be a Spurs fan eh? I`m not sure how you put up with it all these years.
