'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ladies and Reserves Column #4

It`s not only the first team programme that is interrupted by pointless international friendlies. Both the Ladies and Reserves have endured something of a hiatus this week in respect of international fixtures. The Reserves fixture list is always on pause during international weeks. Though there was still some significance for Arsenal`s Reserves this week. For the England U-21s, Henri Lansbury, on loan at West Ham United, scored two goals in a 4-0 win over Belgium U-21s at the Riverside Stadium. (Alex Oxlade Chamberlain also scored in that game).

Lansbury`s wind assisted first effort from right out on the left touchline has become something of a YouTube sensation. Many Arsenal fans seem to maintain hopes that Lansbury could yet become part of the first team picture at Arsenal. I have my doubts. He`s started only three of West Ham`s ten matches (all of which were defeats) and was left out of one entirely. Last season, he spent most of his loan spell in the Championship at Norwich on the substitutes` bench too. At the age of 21, you`d have to be a stellar Championship performer to harbour hopes of becoming a member of Arsenal`s first team squad. Lansbury has not suggested that pedigree and he will likely find himself moved on in the summer I would imagine.

Another academy product that will probably be packed off this summer will be Gavin Hoyte. Brother of fellow Academy graduate Justin, now at Middlesbrough, Hoyte Junior has just returned from a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon. Gavin, a quick centre half who has now doubt inherited some of his athleticism from his professional sprinter parents, was largely used as a substitute during his time in South West London. You have to believe, with his 22nd birthday approaching this summer that he has no future at Arsenal. He hasn`t featured in the first team since he started a league fixture away at Manchester City in November 2008 and was promptly tormented by an in form Robinho.

Hoyte had captained the Reserves last season, but seems to have fallen behind current captain Ignasi Miquel in the pecking order. Elsewhere creative midfielder Oghuzan Ozyakup was an unused substitute for Turkey`s U-21 side in midweek. The Reserves are back on schedule next week, when they face Chelsea Reserves at Cobham training ground on Monday, a 14.05 kickoff behind closed doors. The last home fixture against Everton has now been rearranged from Monday, 2nd April to Tuesday, 1st May at 7pm owing to Barnet`s commitments. That will be Arsenal`s last ever reserve fixture at Barnet`s Underhill Stadium. Indeed, it could be the last fixture ever played at the stadium with Barnet due to leave Underhill after their home game against AFC Wimbledon on April, 28th.

It`s been an international week for the Ladies too, who will have seen their pre season training disrupted by various players representing their nations. Emma Byrne, Yvonne Tracey, Ciara Grant and Niamh Fahey line up for Eire against teammates Jayne Ludlow and Anghared James representing Wales tonight. Fahey is fresh from winning Eire`s player of the Year for 2011. Arsenal striker Ellen White won the equivalent award for England. Her and Stephanie Houghton played in a 1-0 victory for England over Switzerland, Jennifer Beattie and Kim Little were involved for Scotland in a 2-1 win over Holland. Jordan Nobbs got on the scoresheet for England U-23s as they drew 2-2 with their Swedish counterparts.

The draw for the 5th Round of the Ladies Cup- for which, naturally, Arsenal are the holders, took place this week. The Gunners have been handed a tricky away tie at Lincoln City Ladies. It doesn`t exactly sound like the tie that Lady Imps manager Glen Harris wanted saying, "Obviously we would liked to have avoided the favourites, but if you want to progress in any competition you have to beat the best." But Laura Harvey probably would have liked an easier tie too, given that the Ladies have a crunch Champions League tie with Gothenburg three days later. The match takes place at Lincoln United`s Ashby Avenue ground on Sunday, 11th March at 2pm. If you`re in the locality, tickets are priced at 6 adults and 3 concessions. More next week. LD.

Anyone heard of a lad called Tarum Dawkins? apparantly we've bought him from Luton, winger aged 16?
nikolaijns
Dont know anything about this guy, niko. As usual. :).. Anyways coming back to the reserves. I share Tim's view that Lansbury doesn't have a future with us. But I certainly do hope Ozzykup has. Watch the reserves highlights and the kid has some real good vision. Hope he can make it at Arsenal. Would hate it if another Fran Merida happens.
Sajit
I really like the look of Ozyakup, he has a very easy style on the ball, really calm and very effective. I wouldn't say he reminds me of Viera but... Shame about Henri I really think he is a very good talent. Out injured and not really come back, then has a game against Belgium like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oahDU_G1oLw I don't think Fat Sam is the manager for him to learn under as I can't remember his teams ever going through a classic AM.

Tarum Dawkins sounds good. "significant transfer fee", "very quick both with and without the football", "can play off both feet", "monitored by up to 14 Premier League clubs", "desperate to join Arsenal". If it's true I wish him all the best.

Where is our match thread?
Naijagunner
Well, it's been difficult to call as we seem to be playing "with the handbrakes on", so far. The manager seems to have settled for a conservative line up, keeping the same group that whipped Spurs. No complaints there; plus Benayoun should be inspired today playing against his old side. This decision may prove useful for our midweek UEFA fixture.
Naijagunner
We have been shocking, slow dawdling ponderous yet again 2nd to everything, we are so dozy it's like the whole team have just awoke from some enchanted spell. If we don't see some retrospective action taken over that bucktoothed racist suarezs' despicable cheating then we'll know the powers just aren't serious about eradicating diving, truly a revolting loathsome individual. Come on Arsenal wake the fv[k up!!
nikolaijns
Jesus. I've just seen Diaby! He lives!!
nikolaijns
Dozy is the word. Have we forgotten how to tackle? Livrrpool look up for this, we're just watching.
Wyn Mills
Suarez really is an unpleasant piece of work.
Wyn Mills
RVP! Who else?
Wyn Mills
How we won that Game i can only wonder.
Wyn Mills
We really needed this result. Really needed it. C'MON YOU GUNNERS!!!
Wyn Mills
What a daylight robbery lol sweeeeet
nikolaijns
Had this sneaking feeling that we were just so awful that we would rob a win, texted my bro on 80 saying as much. Ending the scums spurious title hopes one week and dashing the mickeys hopes for fourth the next. Happy feckin days!
nikolaijns
All the best to Arteta too, hope this result is the 1st thing he asks for when coming round!
nikolaijns
van persie = god, song = his son, chenzey =the holy ****ing ghost..what a result.
fuzzbag
no way diaby was gonna keep up with that ..he had a couple of nice touches though..and that last strike by the ox, should of been on earlier.
fuzzbag
Alan Smith is such a dozy *****.
Wyn Mills
So thrilled with the result. I think I have lost my voice :-)
Naijagunner
van Persie is just so good. I never stopped believing as you don't have to be the better side all the time, to win it. Just stay focussed and quietly determined. Those qualities were exemplified in no other than our keeper today; he influenced his team mates with his infectious passion.
Naijagunner
Do you think Walcott would be able to pull off what RVP can? No chance. In fact there's no player in our team who comes anywhere close. That's the worrying thing.
Wyn Mills
Surel, the FA will consider retrospective action against the cheat that Suarez has become. I used to like the man but, my God! He went down like a sniper's got him and held on to his ankle like..what?? Makes this win all the more sweeter.
Naijagunner
Agree there, Wyn. Wenger continues to persevere with him for those few moments he produces something close to brilliance. I would have had the Ox on much earlier. I hope the plan is to throw him into the Milan game early.
Naijagunner
Fantastic double save by Chezzer, pure justice for that horrific cheating by Evil bugs bunny, 2 blatantly obvious dives in as many games resulting in no punishment by refs for simulation. Halsey was a c*** all game, definition of a homer. When are these incidents going to be reviewed and punished as it's long beyond a joke?
nikolaijns
Sky have pulled out the stops trying to prove Suarez isn't a cheat when replays clearly show he was already diving before the merest contact with Chesney. They certainly didn't go to so much trouble last week did they?
Wyn Mills
We need to give in to VP's demands. That guy is amazing! And for Song the provider.. Need I say more!!!
e dubbz
Up yours spurs
Sajit
For RvP I doubt its about money.. He needs world class players around him. Period.
Sajit
in the first 30 mins, we were playing with 2 disintegrated team, 1+4 players in defense and the rest ball watching at the other half. we could have gone 3 down, just like how we played against milan. the team has to learn that they have to help out the defense and build up from deep. our defending was so horrific i almost got a heart attack
Joe_@**
Liverpool played the ball wide on the wings, where we are absolute cr@p at shutting out crosses. Dalgliesh knew it, Rednapp did not. By the law of averages (and speaking objectively) they could and should have won that game. But after Suarez's disgraceful dive I'd like to think the Gods decided it was time to intervene. They obviously zapped RVP's left foot and said 'there you go son. Have a go.'
Wyn Mills
szczesny gave a 10 performance today. absolutely amazing. kozz was poor primarily because there was no protecting from the midfield until later part of the game. we relied too much on short passing which was not appropriate when playing against a team like liv today that close down so quick and keep harassing when they lost possession. our midfield was battered into submission. i absolutely have no clue why walcott if preferred to gevinho / ox
Joe_@**
I agree sajit, the final straw for cesc wasn't barca related it was hearing what our transfer targets were. He was like 'really? good luck with that lack of ambition, lifes way too short to hang around and waste my time playing with that dreck.'
nikolaijns
Hope Arteta's isn't a serious infirmity. We do need his experience for the run-in.
Naijagunner
@ Joe, so Wenger was going to leave Walcott out after scoring 2 last week? After seeing him finally achieve some form after weeks and weeks of stinkiness he's going to turn round and bench him? Really?
nikolaijns
Come on you feckin baggiesss!!!
nikolaijns
Let's all laugh at Chelski let's all laugh at chelski la la la la, la la la la.
nikolaijns
Lol!
Wyn Mills
Good solid game in the second half. now we know we can win two on the trot lets press on. I'm not sure if I want to see a fringe team against Milan, I can't work it out. It will be a massive result to get 5 without reply and I just think the league has to be the focus.....sorry.
No 10
Good game from Bac and Gibbs by the way
No 10
Hey fuzzbag, careful with em comparisons and curse words, please we don't wanna get The Almighty angry. God have mercy on us and forgive his slips of tongue
Guyfox
Amen!
Naijagunner
Great result! Afraid, I can't say twas a great game by the lads but we took our chances and boy, we were lucky. Talk about a bust-up in Liverpool dressing room. Did anyone hear anything? Can't wait to don on my Arsenal (reverse Man U) jersey tomorrow. Come on u spuds.
Guyfox
Didn't hear about a bust up? Please tell me more. Don't think I'll be supporting suds though
No 10
Well when you have a dressing room containing Bellendy Suarez and a very grouchy Scottish dwarf it's a miracle if there isn't. Why on earth would any of us want the frillywhites to win? We want 3rd and no CL qualifier, not too mention finishing above them and rubbing their snouts in it all summer.
nikolaijns
We're havin a party when Chelsea die, we're havin a party when Chelsea die..........
Little Dutch
Sorry niko and 10, prob misunderstood. I meant I'd love em spuds to do us a favour, lose 0-2 perhaps or okay 1-2. We want 3rd and we gonna get it. All it takes is continued consistency. We'll make it, come May
Guyfox
I'll drink to that LD. The Chavs don't seem to understand the problem with em performances. I don't think its AVB, its em players. Torres can't score because no one passes to him. Sturridge is so focused on becoming a star overnight that he's more than prepared to run the whole length of the pitch, alone, to get a goal. Teams are not built that way. No creativity in the middle and that's what's affecting Torres' performance IMO. There's so much talk about us being a 1-man team but most of RVP's goals have been tap-ins, some easy tap-ins. He's got excellent positioning and finishing but most importantly he's got a team that works its socks off to present him the chances. That's why he's top scorer in the league. And i'm taking anything away from his unbelievably exceptional goals. The Chavs can freeze in the cold with all em problems on & off the pitch. Suits us fine. Cheers!!! to all Gooners!!!!
Guyfox
The Chavs have given AVB the sack. We all saw it coming. A great coach. What a shame.
Guyfox
Juan Mata, eat that!!
Naijagunner
So true about RvPs goals: only about 5 of them have been purely down to him, 5 dues to his great finishing and 20 because of the team!
