Official: Poldi Is A Gooner

Arsenal have confirmed one of the worst kept transfer secrets in football by officially announcing the signing of German international striker Lukas Podolski. The Polish born striker came through the ranks at Koln F.C. before securing himself a big move to Bayern Munich in 2006, following a World Cup campaign that saw him score three goals for Germany. Things didn`t really work out for the young Podolski in Bavaria, so he returned to Koln in 2009.

Despite a campaign in which Koln have fought relegation, Podolski has netted 18 times and registered 6 assists in 30 appearances. After months of speculation, the signing was announced by both Koln and Arsenal- who typically have gone with the "undisclosed fee on a long term contract" line. Podolski has 43 goals in 94 Germany appearances and turns 27 in June. He`ll join international teammate Per Mertesacker in the Arsenal squad.

With Marouane Chamakh so far off the boil he`d struggle to recognise a kettle and Park Chu Young presumably preoccupied with cone duties on the training ground, Arsenal had tried to buy Podolski in January to make up their striker shortfall. Given their perilous Bundesliga position, Koln were insistent he stay till the season`s end, leaving Arsenal to resurrect Thierry Henry`s Arsenal career briefly. But now the London side officially have their man.

Arsčne Wenger said: "We are delighted to secure the deal for Lukas and see him as an important part of our future. He is a top-class player, a very good finisher and a proven performer at club and international level. He is a very strong player and will provide us with good attacking options.

'We are happy to have made this signing early and we are looking forward to watching Lukas contribute at the European Championship over the summer, a level where he has already made 95 caps at the age of 26. That is a phenomenal record and just shows his quality as a player."

The man himself had this to say; "I`m so happy to be joining Arsenal Football Club and to play in the Premier League. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in Europe with a huge history. There are many top quality players at Arsenal and the style of football which the team plays is fantastic. I`m proud to become an Arsenal player and am looking forward to playing my first match at Emirates Stadium and doing my best for all the Arsenal fans.

"I am looking forward to becoming an Arsenal player, but at the moment my focus is with my current club, FC Cologne. I will give everything I have until the end of season to make sure the team finish as high as possible in the Bundesliga. There will always be a place in my heart for FC Cologne."

Welcome to Arsenal Poldi. Just be sure that the expectation created by the Arsenal careers of Chamakh and Park doesn`t crush your gentle spirit. LD.

Good to have another strong player with a howitzer of a left foot at the club. Gervinho and Arshavin haven't made the left forward role at the club their own and Podolski has the experience to play in that position and hopefully improve on our current options. He is also good cover for RvP if/ when unavailable. Securing the deal before the Euros was a good idea as well.

Good move by the club to move so early for such a good player. Things did need shaking at the club and I feel Poldi will provide that; on the contrary, Delta, I see Gervinho getting better in his 2nd season at the club and staking a claim for the 1st team shirt. It is Theo who will have to be concerned while the Ox continues his education. I think it is going to be an interesting 2013 season.

Willkommen, Lukas! Very pleased with a nice solid signing, before the summer even starts! This is a bit more like it- keep it up, Arsenal :-D

I thought, considering his recent form, it was a much better & promising performanceby Gervinho on the day. He just lacks composure on the final ball/decision which gets cured with time.

Expectation will be the thing. It sounds like Poldi thrives on love so let's hope that's what he gets from our restless fans! Assuming RvP stays it would be a great thing for him to share the scoring burden rather than have it all on his head.

Superb signing! Already our summer is better than last season and the season hasn't even finished yet. If we can get one or two more signings of this stature done before the Euros kick off I'll be very very happy.

A good summer of signings has become imperative with the apparent shift in power in the city of Manchester. Happy to observe that Arsenal has not been so dominated by City as United was tonight.

Fergie earned my respect when he shook hands after the game having almost exchanged fisticuffs with Mancini.

This is great news! Podolski can play across the front line, mainly in the centre and in the left forward positions, which of course is a massive boost for us and injects quality in those areas where unfortunately, everyone bar van Persie has disappointed to some degree. It's a welcome change to have got this big transfer out of the way fast this year. Hopefully we have more in the works.

If you can get Vertonghen before the Euro's too, that would be one hell of a start. LOTS of time for the players to adjust this time.

Great bit of business getting him before the summer and ther euros, now let's hop he has a fantastic tournament and hits the ground running come August. Olivier giroud, M'villa and maybe another attacker/ striker after clearing out chamakh, park and vela, denilson.....We seriously need to get players off the wage bill. If we can make those additions happen along with jack getting fit then we have a squad that should be challenging for the title.

Anybody else worried that he looks like he cannot use his right foot for anything other than stand on it..Looks totally dependent on left foot.. and such players are easily found out in Premiership.

Its a very good signing. I follow the German national team and Poldi has been very good for them on a consistent basis. He's at a good age now, having probably been too young when he moved to Bayern earlier. He has all the ingredients to come good, depends on how he can cope mentally in a new country / environment. I'm also happy that the club has taken positive action to remedy the mistakes of the past 2 transfer windows. Move early and finish the signings asap, if its before the Euros, I'd be really pleased with that.

@Sajit I've seen him score with his right. Yes he is very left footed but so was RvP for many years, and most right footed players are very reluctant to use their left for anything other than stand on. Left footers always get more stick for not using their week foot than right footers.

One of the good things about Poldi is that he takes his shots early and from any angle. He shoots from areas that he also passes from and that means he is very difficult to read.

Sajit, good players who are predominantly one footed have done well in the PL in the past. RvP before he found a use for his chocolate leg was already a very good player - now he is exceptional. More examples - Arjen Robben (hardly shoots with his right), Wayne Rooney (not seen many left footed goals from him), Torres and Tevez.

Yes I think if you have one world class foot the other can do what the hell it likes for all I care. Sajit, how about looking at the positives for a change?? We have just signed a proven international goal machine and all you have to say is "yeah but his right foot is crap" come on mate, have a look at some of the corkers he has scored regardless of what bloody foot he uses. Instead of being worried about his right foot why don't you just cherish his cannon of a left foot hey.

Looks to be a good signing and he has a good goals to games ratio. Aside from adding to the strike force we have to be prepared that RVP will not be available for parts of the season to come, given that he must be close to 100% this season.

We've been pretty lucky with RvP this season. It would be a miracle if he repeated that again (assuming he gets the chance). I'm excited by Podolski's directness. We have another true world class striker on the books. [IMG][/IMG]

This guy would be great especially with Rosiicky's new found mobility, Songs creative passing behind defenders and Arteta's magic not to talk about Jacks all round game. I am so glad, ARSENAL please get the RVP job done ASAP.
