Hodgson Names Walcott & The Ox In Euro Squad

Arsenal duo, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been named in Roy Hodgson`s squad for Euro 2012.

With the championships around a month away new England manager Roy Hodgson has chosen the pacey Arsenal pair to the competition.

Walcott is no stranger to the full England set-up, indeed Goran-Eriksonn controversially took him to the Euro 2008 tournament despite never having featured in a top flight game.

The Ox however will be making his maiden voyage towards his full international debut. Having performed brilliantly at under-21 level and then impressing in his first season at Arsenal.

Both players have fully earned their call ups and I`ll look forward to, hopefully, seeing them getting involved in the summer.

Good luck boys.

Stuart Downing???!!!!!!
julieloveshenry4ever
Happy for both of them. Happy for the Ox and that rules his out of the Olympics. I just hope they bloody use him!!
Trennon
@ julieloveshenry4ever "Stuart Downing???!!!!!!" ha ha! That's what everyone is saying.
FunGunner
I guess Wenger's ploy (assuming it is that) to use the Ox sparingly, perhaps to take him off the National team radar, has not exactly paid off.
Naijagunner
I thought Gibbs would of been nailed on.....? With Wilshire fit that would of been 4 in the England squad.
Scotch Eggs Rule
Yeah! Gibbs does deserve a shout. Well, maybe, the Manager has other plans for the team. It is the Olympics for Gibbs then, it will appear.
Naijagunner
Gibbs was never gonna make it with the established Cole and Baines. Be silly to take 3 left backs.
Trennon
Gibbs was never gonna make it cos, aside from that block that saved us third spot, he's been awful
Ozi Gooner
Gibbs over Baines? No chance
shewore
Norwich's 'keeper? Hmmm...
damiano_tommassi
you can just see the 'Ruddy hell' back pages now..
nikolaijns
haha!
shewore
Dont agree with Ox. Hes the darling of gooners coz of his nationality. He is good but hyped far too much. The same people are going to get on his back when he fails next season (whcih will invariably happen when expectations rise far too much).. this is like putting Theo in the 06 WC squad.. Stupid choice.
Sajit
Sure you don't mean "Wuddy Hell"?
shewore
shewore - Not over Baines alongside him. If you had a choice of playing only one of either Downing or Baines on the left in a formation that allows it, i'd lay money you'd vote Baines. This is C***ly's last major tournament (thank god!) and someone much younger needs blooding, who else but Gibbs currently?
Scotch Eggs Rule
That's assuming RH starts Cole at LB, employing another LB, albeit one that can cross and deliver some beautiful setpieces in front of him would add greater security down that side against the better teams and lets face it, anything's better than that berk Downing poncing up and down the left wing all game getting no where.
Scotch Eggs Rule
Yeah, but don't think he plans on playing Baines on the wing, would be interesting shout, but can't see it. Can't believe he's taking Downing straight up i'd prefer Heskey on the wing.
shewore
Yeah, Downing's never impressed me. Or anyone else, by the sound of it!

Sajit, Ox is different - he's played some games, is a couple of years older than Theo was, and - crucially - is actually a very good player. He doesn't disappoint in defending, in possession, shooting, passing, dribbling... Much better player than Theo was. Arguably, much better than Theo is.

I don't pay much attention to England - it's lose-lose for me (either my country's national side loses, having told us they're the best in the world for years; or if they win, absolute ****es like Cashley Hole and John "you know what you are" Terry have their names written in history) - but looking at this squad makes me wince. If that's the best we can put together, we're in trouble.
damiano_tommassi
shewore - Heskey? LOL Jees, you really do hate Downing!
Scotch Eggs Rule
Thats the thing, when walcott was taken to the world cup in 06 he hadn't actually played any games for us had he? Ox will set the tournament on fire! Until England get knocked out in the Quarters obviously.
nikolaijns
it's a real pity for Jack to have to sit out but I think if he had been available then it would have been at Oxs' expense. Looking forward to the next WC when the pair will be mainstays in the side, as will gibbo and wally. Not a bad contribution for a manager that supposedly hates English players yawn.
nikolaijns
Thank gawd dalgliesh has quit/been dwarf tossed. Sick of the sight and sound of the grouchy smurf.
nikolaijns
I hope Hodgson makes good on his allusion that he may use Walcott up front until Rooney is available. We've seen his finishing ability and his pace can be put to much better use playing through the middle.
No 10
It's a shame Frimpong and Jenks have decided to represent their second nations as we could've conceivably contributed half the future England team. Fingers crossed Aneke & Afobe make the step up that JET couldn't manage.
No 10
Happy the ox got called up i think its a lot different to Theo in 06 considering the ox has played plenty of games and scored in premiership and champions league, cant see why Downing involved is such a shock fair enough had a poor season but when you look at the other options not much choices Johnson hasnt really played at all this season hopefully he sees he has to leave City now because really could be a top player but needs games, Lennon too similar to Theo, maybe Dyer might have had a chance but cant think too many more
Van Persie
Have to disagree sajit, I would go as far to say that ox is better then theo right here right now. I have a feeling the world will see who Alex oxlade-chamberlain is this summer. The whole of Europe must be shaking in there boots at the thought of facing andy Carroll and Stuart downing. Can't see where the goals will come from, just hope the ox gets some playtime and has a good tournament. The Dutch, French, Spanish, and Germans are on other level. Would even say Italy, so not looking good for our boys this summer. Does anybody else find it hard to support there national team with John terry in it? I just can't get behind them.
gunnerman76
I'm happy for the Ox and Theo. Theo shouldn't have been at Germany 06 but should have been at South Africa. For some bizarre reason Capello chose Lennon over Theo and Lennon was so terrible in the first game he got yanked and was never seen again. I don't have the squad in front of me, but I think Oxlade will be competing with Stuart Downing as back-up to Theo on the right and Ashley Young on the left of midfield. Really? Sometimes the game seemed to pass the Ox by, but he still got 2 goals in 6 starts. The game always seemed to pass Downing by- 0 goals in 28 starts (no 'assists' either). I don't think he will start any games unless there is an injury, but I fully expect him to make the bench ahead of Downing because he offers so much more- talent, vision, athleticism, intelligence, etc. Spuds will wonder why Theo over the fantastic, second coming of Pele Lennon. That's a no brainer. Five years ago they were similar- run fast, no end product. Now, they still both run fast, but Theo actually has some end product and decent numbers- Lennon, not so much. Lennon has actually regressed- I doubt we'll see him in an England shirt again. As frustrating as Theo can be, he offers a lot more than Lennon. And so does the Ox. On an unrelated note, I want Bayern Munich to win on Saturday. Yeah, if Chelsea park the bus and steal a win and it knocks the Spuds out of the CL qualifying round it won't be a total loss, but, and it pains me to say this, the Spuds deserve a chance to get knocked out in the qualifying rounds.
elbondo
Pleased to see the Ox make it, the lad is very impressive & if nothing else, he's a tryer. Defo worth the call unlike Walnut in '06, now that was very, very strange. I can see how Walnut's been selected over Lennon as he's probably more versatile than our Aaron. Aaron's an out & out winger & better than Walnut, but thats all he is - a winger, whereas Walnut is a better finisher & can play as a striker, which is his best position IMO.

Like a lot of you, I can't understand the inclusion of Downing. Why? What's he done this season? Naff all, thats what & he certainly wasn't picked on form, so it must be on past England performances & that he has a left foot. Lennon has been more productive on the left than him this season FFS!

As an aside & to satisfy my curiosity, but when did the cannon on your Club badge get switched from facing left to facing right? Have to say that it looked better facing left, facing right looks odd to me. It'd be like our cockeral facing the other way - strange. Yeah, OK, before you say, I know you'd all prefer our cockeral to have his face up his arse!

Spuds-U-Like
Spuds, behave yourself mate! Lennon is not better than Walcott unless you mean when playing on the right of a 4-4-2? In which case, Walcott's never played there for us because it's not our formation so there's no chance of comparison. Otherwise Walcott outscores and out assists him every single season he's been at Arsenal as a first teamer. Lennon just runs down the wing like a pregnant penguin! ;o)
Scotch Eggs Rule
As for Downing mate, who the hell knows?! 20 million *chortle*
Scotch Eggs Rule
Gotta disagree with you Scotchy, Lennon is & always has been a better winger than Walnut who relies soley on knocking the ball past & outrunning his full back, he couldn't sell a dummy to a thumbless baby mate. Walnut never played as right winger for your lot? Sorry mate, not buying that, I've read & heard lots of Gooners bemoaning his abilities in that area. As I said, Walnut is a striker, probably better playing off a lead striker which is where I'd like to see him play for England. If Le Whinger had played him off Adebayor (when he actually wanted to play for you!), he'd be a devastating striker by now, I think a lot of his years with you have been wasted because of that failure.

Spuds-U-Like
LOOOOOOOOOL! "like a pregnant penguin!"
julieloveshenry4ever
Spuds, he plays outside right. It might sound like semantics, but he's a wide forward and plays there, not right wing ala Lennon. Some Gooners don't know the difference (present company accepted of course guys and gals). I know you know your stuff and the same vice versa, just ignore the raving, foaming at the mouth Gooners who'll never appreciate the good Walcott does (as well as the bad) You're right, Lennon has better footwork and technique on the ball, but at the end of the day, Walcott doesn't play for us as a right winger mate and therefore any comparisons are only guess work rather than quantifiable evidence. I notice you didn't deny my description of Lennon's running style though ;o)
Scotch Eggs Rule
Scotchy, we've crossed swords so to speak for some time now, for me to take the rise from what you write. Yes it is semantics, but then thats the whole crux of opinion isn't it? The reason I didn't touch on the penguin dig is because I'd rather have an interesting penguin than a run-of-the-mill duck in the shape of one Robert Pires! ;-)

Spuds-U-Like
Before you use your "semantics" (aren't they an Irish folk band?), yes I concede that he was a totally different & better player than Azza!
Spuds-U-Like
I thought that was "The Pedantics"?
Scotch Eggs Rule
Oooooooooh! Starting on Sir Robert of Pires is a risky game with Gooners mate lol
Scotch Eggs Rule
Pedantic, moi? Nah mate.

What, even when you consider that classic penalty routine? No, if it walks like a duck, its Robert Pires!

Spuds-U-Like
Walcotts footwork in the box is really good it's just out wide that he becomes too obvious to read. Hodgson did mentions Theos ability to play up front as one of the reasons he wasn't worried about Rooneys suspension.
No 10
Oh and Spud it was 2002, I think it was part of the renewed kit deal with Nike to get a new crest.
No 10
Thanks No 10, really appreciate your clearing that up for me about the badge change, still prefer the old badge, that was classy.

Spuds-U-Like
Can't confirm the date of the change off the top of my head, but the reason it was changed was because the previous crest (which spuds refers to) was never copyrighted meaning anyone could reproduce it. Purely as a necessary marketing/image strategy.
Scotch Eggs Rule
I think you'll find a lot of Gooners with you on that.
No 10
Shame the money men had to get involved Scotch mate, understandable, but a shame never-the-less. Pity they didn't find a way of altering it enough so that copywrite was protected, whilst essentially being the same badge.

Guess its an age thing, but I still prefer our old badge from the late 60's to our current version of it. Maybe the copywrite thing was the reason behind our new one. Hated the full club crest when that was on our shirts, that was OTT. Keep it simple I say.

Spuds-U-Like
You can't really say it affects the way you view your club on a day to day basis though. More a case of a thorn in a bears paws. rather than a major issue. In fact, thinking about Arsenal right now, that is actually 273rd on my list of things I want to see done at Arsenal this summer, just below getting rid of Almunia in 272nd and "No more bloody Carlsberg" in 271st....
Scotch Eggs Rule
Anyone want to wager both Theo and Ox come back crocked?
Wyn Mills
Don't go there mate.....!
Scotch Eggs Rule
Rather underwhelming squad. I have a feeling that the Ox will shine!
GoonerLou
Stop it Wyn. EGG! What! You want better beer above a better kepper?

OT. Some facts I thought I should share against tonight's CL final game . The last team (Inter Milan) to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League went on to lift the trophy and win the competition against Bayern Munich in the final. 2.The last time Atletico Madrid won the Europa League, Chelsea won a Double. 3.The last English team (Manchester United) to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League, went on to lift the trophy and win the competition. 4.An English team (Manchester United) has previously won the FA Cup and gone on to win the Champions League, beating Bayern Munich in the final who lost the DFB Pokal during that season. 5.The last time Manchester City won the league title, an English team (Manchester United) won the European Cup. 6.All Champions League finals played in Munich produced a winner of the competition for the first time in their history (Nottingham Forest, Marseille and Dortmund). They all took place in Bayern Munich's previous home, the Olympiastadion. 7.The last time Manchester United went Trophyless an English Club won the Champions League (Liverpool) and they didn't finish in the top 4 . 8. The Champions League Finale is on 19-05 n Chelsea Football Club was found in 1905 9. And last but not least for chelsea: 2000: Quarterfinal 2004: Semifinal 2008: Final 2012: ????
Naijagunner
I like statisticians cos when their recordings fail to conform, the search for a new sequence of stats continues. BAYERN WINS TONITE!
Naijagunner
Think Ox will get some game time. Theo is certain to get some game time IMO. Think woy should take a chance and field some of the young'uns. Its clear England dont have a prayer in hell of winning this tournament so why not use it to give the younger players a bit of a run out and start building a team which may have a good crack at the WC in Brazil. Take solace in the fact that this is likely to be that vile tosser JT's last tournament for England. As for the final tonight, though I may have to eat my words later, I just cannot see how the Stamford Chavs are going to overcome Bayern on their own patch. If Robben, Ribery and Schweini are on form and get a regular supply to Big Mario up front, Chavski are *****ed IMO. C'mon Bayern!!! Will not be able to stomach *****ers like Lampard, Terry and ah yes that little ***** Assley Cole lifting the C/L trophy.
Ned Stark
That being said, it is going to be fun knowing that the little Spuddies are going to be crapping themselves when the Chavs get a shot on goal. No such worries for us.
Ned Stark
Nice position to be in. Another reason to consider Koscielny for a 'Grove' sized knighthood.
Naijagunner
The chavs win and the Spuddies get to miss out on CL footsie; the chavs lose and we get a chance to fight to be the 1st London club to win the CL; plus Spurs get to be knocked out of CL anyway, in the qualifiers. Win-win!
Naijagunner
Exactly why I want a Bayern win. The Chavs could conceivably be richer in terms of money, but we are easily richer in terms of history. Therefore it would be fitting for us to be the first London club to bring the C/L trophy to London. Just hope Bayern do us a favour tonight and give us that chance still to add that honour to our legacy.
Ned Stark
Get the feck in there!!!!!
nikolaijns
oh bollix
nikolaijns
Damn! what do I know?
Naijagunner
Grit! Sheer grit!! And some bit of luck. Well, it's Thursday night footie for tiny Tots.
Naijagunner
Well, thank god for 3rd place now! That was one of the most undeserved wins I've seen, the Chavs didn't start playing till the 85th minute, and they end up winning. Feel disappointed for Bayern, but their finishing was *****. I like Schweini as a player, and feel bad for him.
prits
A lesson on the importance of taking your chances when they come your way. How many times did Bayern go in front or get a chance (the pen) to take the advantage? They lost it tonight, Robben and co.
Naijagunner
If we had a defence as disciplined as the chavs we'd be unstoppable. But they've also had huge slices of luck. Bugger.
Wyn Mills
Ah man. Even the Spuds being burned cannot shake the feeling of disappointment. Bayern totally choked in front of their fans and now asswipes like Cashley and John 'Upstanding Citizen' Terry are gonna get their grubby mitts on the C/L before our lads do. No justice in the world I tells ya. And these ****s are forever gonna have this bragging right over us...we won the C/L before you did. ***** what a horrible night. Poor Schweini. Gomez was absolutely dire tonight. If he was on form, Bayern would have walked it.
Ned Stark
oh well...sp*rs lol.
nikolaijns
Have to feel sorry for Bayern. A few weeks ago the treble was on for them!
Wyn Mills
Just think though ned it could so easily have been us sitting there sweating through that crap tonight. Thank you Marton Fulop.
nikolaijns
True Niko. We were very fortunate. Poetic justice I suppose, so many of our goalies in the past have gifted other teams points, about time things evened out in our favour.
Ned Stark
I hope redknapp has hired extra security down in sandbanks tonight, things turning even uglier than usual over there. Twitchy lynch mob.
nikolaijns
I watched the game and thought, 'they are playing like Arsenal, all close but no cigar, but shouldn't the sleeves be white?' Profligate is the word I believe. Silver lining- the Spuds are out of the Champions League.
elbondo
It's a complete travesty for London football that Chelsea are the first to bring that famous European Cup here. It's at Wembley next year, if I remember correctly. Arsenal had better level the score soon. It's been a bitter night for me, but I cannot begrudge Chelsea their victory. We are Kings of London football, one CL trophy does not change that. We will show our class again eventually.
NADH-91
You sure about that NADH? The final was at Wembley last year so seems strange to have it there again so soon. But agreed. We need to get this monkey off our back and overcome our C/L demons soon. I feel that AW's career will seem incomplete without a C/L trophy to his name, this is something he needs to nip in the bud before he calls time on his career. Hopefully the next time the European Cup is brought to London, it will be our name on it. We need another march to the final, hopefully next season will be our season to do it, whereever the final is.
Ned Stark

FIRST LONDON CLUB TO WIN CL!!!!!!!

NADH your right, I stand corrected Wembley is the venue for the final next season. I would weep tears of joy if Arsenal were to win it at Wembley.

I am not happy, I can't lie. Chelsea deserved nothing tonight but for the profligacy of Bayern strike force. This has placed added pressure on our team and Manager to deliver that trophy; considering we are seeking to break our "trophy less" run, that additional demand is something I am not sure we have the personnel to meet, unless Wenger gets his mojo back, somehow. It is all hands to the pump now.
Naijagunner
Wow.. John Terry is such a scumbag.. Doesnt he have an ounce of shame.. What a *****er
Sajit
How can he even think of celebrating something he tried to jeopardize.. ******** scumbag
Sajit
Hahahaha! I was wondering how long before they came on this site. It must be bedlam on the VS site tonight. And, yes, Harry had better double his security detail.
Naijagunner
It was only a matter of time before they ******** infiltrated this board with their shower of *****e. KNB should be out celebrating his team's win, instead is trawling on the Vital Arsenal board trying to wind up us Gooners. Pathetic.
Ned Stark
Let Nag have his day. Chelsea are a club in decline, so are we, but hey, we did not finish 6th this year. And we didn't lose to them this season. Chelsea should celebrate this, it's a last hurrah for many of their players. I am happy for Drogba and Lampard and Di Matteo. Maybe Abramovic as well, as he's invested so much into this project of his. However, there are certain people, fans and players, that I'm not too pleased for. Let Nag spam and spam, it shows his own personal class and the class of the team he supports. It'll come back to haunt him, maybe sooner rather than later.
NADH-91
Fans, just like the team. Rather than celebrating this win with his fellow chavs, this ******** tosser decides to lord it over Arsenal fans. Pathetic.
prits
Had a brief glance at VS, Its pure bedlam there. They are calling for old twitchy's head! Surprise surprise, talking about wanting Capello, Brendan Rodgers et al to replace him. Talk about overreacting.
Ned Stark
Well what other joy is there to be had when your owner is a gangster your captain is a racist and you play the kind of bus parking dreck that even feckin Allardyces Bolton would've blushed at? Plus he has no chelski mates wherever he's at to celebrate buying europe so the internet is his only friend.
nikolaijns
Miserable day. The Hammers have come back up too, meaning that we are going to have to listen to Fat Sam and his ********* next season. Never liked West Ham either so this day has just been *****e all round.
Ned Stark
Chelsea is like a gang with Drogba as the gang leader. It was that gang mentality that has seen them through to this stage and achievement. Players who understand the club's culture and mentality have been called up to perform for them and they have. Arsenal will need more of such big game men, as we had with the invincibles. No more excuses of youthfulness; time for our kids to grow up and fight!
Naijagunner
Btw, wtf is wrong with Jack.. His recent tweets are totally p1ssing off. I understand hes English and all. .but hes been kissing John Terry arsse and chavskis arse.. So have Benik and Henderson.. ******** irritating.
Sajit
Ah the joys of not giving a feck about witter...bliss :)
nikolaijns
And what a satisfying win it was! Played off the park for 85 minutes, nick one in the 88th minute and hold on for penalty kicks. I guess the good thing is the Russian criminal may decide it's time to move on and Chelsea will fall back to their historic mid-table/drop zone form. Spuddies must be devastated at this moment, losing CL on a technicality. Maybe I'll visit Vital Spuds- they are probably whinging on about Harry costing then the CL when the truth is THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THEY THINK THEY ARE. BAE is crap but they think he's the second coming of Roberto Carlos. Modric is basically Aleksander Hleb playing more centrally but they think he is some creative genius. And so on.
elbondo
Praying for an exodus of players from Spurs. We should go in with a cheeky bid for RVDV to appease RVP. At least we can offer him C/L footer :-) That was a joke, but seriously hopefully Modric, Bale, VDV and Ade-payme-more do bugger off and ditch the Spuds.
Ned Stark
I could take Sandro and maybe, Kyle, off them. :-)
Naijagunner
Well, what do you think is going to happen at Chelsea? The question everyone asked - 'what will happen if the Chavs win the CL' will finally be answered over the next couple of months. This Chelsea squad needs an overhaul but Abramovich have the stomach to invest another fortune buying up another team?
prits
