New Away Shirt - Nice or Nasty?

As we edge ever closer to the new season we get whiffs of proper football at intermittent intervals.

First we get the fixtures, then the boys return to training, a short while later we`re able to watch some pre-season friendlies before eventually kicking off the new campaign.

Not so long ago in history every 2 or 3 years we`d get excited (especially as school boys) when the club would throw in the release of the new shirt as part of the pre-season festivities, everyone would be strutting around for the summer in their spanking new Arsenal shirts.

However over recent years this event has become almost annual, and mores the pity the shirts have been more vomiting inducing rather than something to look forward to.

This season, in my humble opinion, has seen the unveiling of the worst home and away combination I can recall. A few weeks ago the club showcased the new home shirt, which truth be told, wouldn`t be so bad had Nike not allowed the local primary school to design it. The collar alone is enough to make me puke.

Yesterday Arsenal.com gave us a glimpse of the new away strip. (Check out how miserable they all look, then they`re forced to smile, apart from Chesney, who appears to refuse point blank)

I`m starting to feel like Nike want people to make fun of us.

Indeed we`ve already seen a wealth of Gooners barfing into buckets all over the place, not to mention the incessant mockery from up and down the country (though I`m not sure why there have been many complaints that the shirt will clash with Villa and West Ham at away matches, surely this isn`t the first time that we, or any other team has had an away shirt that could be used at away games, indeed we`ve had many shirts clash with Chelsea, Everton, Reading, etc etc).

With all the change that is seemingly going on at our club at the minute, one can only hope that once the contract with Nike expires that we can switch to a company such as adidas who I believe make superior looking strips.

You might feel that discussing the away strip in such detail is a complete waste of time, but hey, it`s pre-season, there`s not much else to talk about.

That`s my take on it, what do you guys think?

The away strip is too gaudy and the goalkeepers away kit is a joke! Sczcesny looked like an abominable doll! Maybe the goalkeepers kit is designed to distract opposition strikers when they enter the final third.

It has to be Nike taking the ***** because they know Adidas will be taking over from next year. Seriously, and I mean seriously, is there any nutbag on this planet that believes someone would buy that over the red and white strip? It's bizarre.

The new kit cycle goes something like this- pictures leaked everyone hates it- released on site- everyone hates it. It comes out and people say- oooh, actually it doesn't look bad on. Then bam! The buy it. It will be the same with this one, it'll sell in record numbers I'll bet. The thinking behind bright keepers kits is that a striker is drawn to the colour from the corner of his eye and therefore is more inclined to shoot straight at it.

Correct LD, it's the same reason why The Punisher has a target on his bullet proof vest, people will instinctively aim at a presented target. Anyway, I don't know if I like the kit but I like how different it is, if we win anything with this strip it will become a classic.

If they wanted to acheive that effect they should have strapped a 12" foam whanger to the front of his shorts, that's draw the eye for sure!

I'd generally agree with your premise on shirts LD, but this one is genuinely hideous.

Oh LD I was hoping to share that nugget of knowledge to VA, but just to confirm that that is why we see more and more brightly coloured keepers. Tim Howard went the other way with his camo style last season. The same is meant for bright boots on skilful players: that the eye watches the feet and not the ball.

It's the damned socks that really kill it. I can just tolerate the shirt (tho that red trim on the sleeves makes it worse) but the socks ruin it utterly. If the socks were just plain black I could deal with the shirts. Won't even go into the keeper kit.

On the kits - I like the home kit now. I would've preferred it with a collar or V-neck, but when you look through the kit history the blue stripes are on some of the great kits through the 60s, '89 and it reminds me a little of the Dreamcast kits....but should've had a collar.

Actually I think Szczesny intentionally didn't smile so that he could try to make the pink dare I say, look more formidable by putting his game face on. Personally, I think the kit is *****e but I don't care as long as it brings us money and we do well on the pitch

What does it matter? If they put a good few Away points in the bag and the keeper concedes fewer goals, I will be happy with any kit, no matter how hideous. Maybe, our opponents will be laughing so hard, they will not react quickly enough to our goals.

This kit reminds me of the 2007-08 3rd away kit. Loved that one. And how does it matter. If we win something in this kit, itll become famous.

Yeah I remember hearing the keeping kit reason some time back, because Cech always wore horrically gaudy kits and some commentator (in talking actual interesting knowledgable point shock horror) said there was reasoning behind it in that subconsciously when shooting a player will always aim fora more brightly coloured target in that split second timeframe. We did try it with Almunia but it made no odds boom tish.

Didn't Almunia use hair colour rather than his strip. Interesting that Theo was in the photo shoot.

I don't mind it at all. Probably because I prefer purple to yellow. One of my FWB's loves purple and actually pre-ordered today. And nothing can be worse than the 91-93 away kit. I feel a bit sorry for Szcsesny though with the hot pink kit. I probably prefer it to the new home kit, although at least it is the traditional red with white sleeves. The only one I've ever bought is the 2000-2 home kit with the red collar- that's a nice one. It was also the last one with a collar and I doubt I'll buy another until they release one with a collar- without a collar it's just an overpriced t-shirt.

G_DU It's not at all interesting that Theo is in the photo shoot. I can name you countless times when a player who eventually left actually posed for a kit inauguration.

@Eboue, didn't the '09/'10 kit come with Collars? Remember the white home kit, with blue (I think) pin stripes; and blue away kit, made popular by Arshavin?

Naija, elbondo, yeah and we had a Sp*rs-like third kit as well that season. That also had a collar. Even the Farewell to Highbury kit had a collar.

@mq is going to be in for a big shock this season. RDM is utterly useless and lucked himself into a CL. Chelsea finished 6th last year and it's not going to get any better. We'll see who's laughing come next May.

I think Mq is mistaking the responses to his jibes as Attention (and happy that we help make his life less lonely) rather than revulsion, which is what it is.
