Frimpong Fined By F.A.

Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong has been fined £6,000 and warned about his future conduct after an offensive post on social networking site twitter. Frimpong responded to a Spurs` fans post to the Ghana born Arsenal player that he would pray Frimpong broke his arms and legs. Frimpong retweeted the post to his followers adding the words, "Scum Yid" in reply.

The charge was issued last week under F.A. rule E3 which deals with "language and / or behaviour amounting to improper conduct."

'Frimpong posted comments amounting to improper conduct and/or which brought the game into disrepute, which included a reference to faith,' read a statement from the FA.

Right out of the gate let me just say that I'm mixed race, that shouldn't matter but it gives me some credence when talking about the double standards around the subject of racism. Black people can't walk around using the "N" word then ban white people from using it. Likewise people of Jewish decent who happily call themselves Yids can't expect others not to use the word. I don't think any Spurs fan gives a damn to be honest, I think they can tell the difference between two people equally hating on each other or one person racially abusing the other. Are the authorities going to ban anger and dislike for others then? If I get into an argument with a fat bloke, guess what I'm going to mention? Do I hate fat people? No. Was I *****ed off? Yep. What's the problem? Just saying.

I think the problem is that Frimpong wasn't just talking back to on moron who'd given him some grief, he made a public statement infront of 100,000+ followers. Yes people who use “yid” or the N-word for themselves have no cause for complaint when it’s used back at them …. But these people who use it are not speaking for the entire population these insults could be used against. It is a bit petty, but the FA can’t just sit back and do nothing. Frimpong got fined, I genuinely believe he didn’t even know he was being anti-semitic, justice served, let’s get on with it.

The issue is made slightly trickier because the vast proportion of Spurs fans aren't actually Jewish, so it's not really within their gift to desensitise the word or cast aspersions on their intentions with it.

Let me start off by saying I am Jewish. Don't worry I am a true Gunner, and have't been on here as a double agent. My issue with Spurs fans using Yid is, as LD says, that most of them are not Jews. They have taken ownership of a racial slur which does not apply to them. Spurs fans may call themselves yids but they have no right to. There are many Jewish fans of other, particularly London, teams that find the spurs adoption of this moniker and the resulting chants of 'yid scum' etc very difficult. Has anyone seen David Baddiel on being a Jewish Chelsea fan? They have used the 'spurs fans call themselves yids' as an excuse to sing purely anti-semitic songs.

I also think that there is an issue that young people, Frimpong included, don't actually know that yid is indeed a racial slur. Having had ACL reconstruction I actually responded to Frinpongs initial tweet, wishing him a good recovery, and it was obvious that his 'yid scum' was 100% about the other tweeters football affiliation and had no racial consultation.

I am inclined to agree the kid meant no harm to the Jewish race but only had 'eyes' for the Spurs fan who made that tweet about his health. The FA has acted as they should; even if it is like using a sledge hammer to kill an insect. No doubt, there will be a few professional players out there who will be a lot more careful about their exchanges in future.

Frimpong said nothing racist and could never be charged with racist abuse as the word racism refers to someone's race NOT their religeon which is why t he FA charged him with bringing the game into disrepute. I wish people would stop referring to religeous insults as racism, it isn't and never will be. This isn't a dig at a particular person, just a general comment.

Egg - I am Jewish by birth. It is not my religion but my heritage.

Baddiel: " er, can you stop taking pride in that word because it's making the thugs who support my team more racist". So, you don't think the problem might be with your own supporters then David? clown

He doesn't deny it is the Chelsea fans who sing those songs that have a problem, but those people who are taking pride in that word are not jews. It's like me taking pride in being called a *******, it just makes no sense. But I agree with him that spurs fans adopting yid as their own (rather than jews adopting it as their own) invites further anti-semitism under the protection of 'they call themselves yids'.

Indeed. Listen I'm not Mr. PC brigade. Frankly I think the world needs to grow up a bit and there's far more sensitivity in the world than there ought to be. A guy I follow on twitter made a joke about the Chinese in the Olympics last night and he was savaged for it. But to use a comparison, Arsenal have the highest proportion of black fans in England. It wouldn't be for me to start proudly adopting the n word as a result and then it wouldn't be for other fans to start chanting it at me on the basis that I have adopted it as a badge of honour.
