Arsenal's NextGen Squad Announced

Arsenal have announced a 32 man squad for their inaugural quest for the NextGen Series- a new U-19 Champions League tournament. The young Gunners will face Athletic Bilbao, Olympique Marseilles and Olympiacos in the group stages, with the home fixtures being played at Underhill.

As expected for a squad of this size, it's a mixture of first year scholars- such as Jack Jebb, Leander Siemann and Chuba Okpom, along with names that will become the fulcrum of the Reserve team this season, such as Martin Angha, Kristoffer Olsson and Serge Gnabry. Thomas Eisfeld, Nico Yennaris and Chuks Aneke are also included, but you'd think highly unlikely to feature.

The squad is effectively now reduced to 31 as Benik Afobe has joined Bolton on loan. Yennaris and Aneke will more than likely be sent on similar loans as the end of the transfer window nears. The squad in full:

Goalkeepers:

Reice Charles-Cook

Josh Vickers

Defenders:

Zach Fagan

Elton Monteiro

Sead Hajrovic

Leander Siemann

Martin Angha

Arinse Uade

Tom Dallison

Brandon Ormonde-Ottewill

Samir Bihmoutine

Hector Bellerin

Kyle Ebecilio

Midfielders:

Nico Yennaris

Isaac Hayden

Jordan Wynter

Kris Olsson

Jon Toral

Jack Jebb

Josh Rees

Thomas Eisfeld

Serge Gnabry

Chuks Aneke

Forwards:

Phillip Roberts

Nigel Neita

Alfred Mugabo

Tarum Dawkins

Anthony Jeffrey

Chuba Akpom

Austin Lipman

Zak Ansah

Benik Afobe

Anybody else see Benik's hat trick last night for Bolton? Took the kid just 16 minutes and showed real class.

Is this series going to be televised in anyway? Would be great to watch the young talents from all over Europe.

I think not. the clubs are probably keen to protect young talent from a) being overexposed to hype and b) to stop them being cherry picked by other clubs!

InteresTing. No Ryo or miquel. Loan spells perhaps and deservedly so. So does this mean that there are no more reserves games? What about players over 21 looking to get back into match fitness?

Don't think televising the event will in anyway contribute to the players being cherry picked LD....half of the audience at those games will be scouts!

Would probably alert attention quite a bit though, especially if there was a it of hype around. Sajit, there is still a reserve league, it's just been rebilled "The U-21 Premier League." But you can have four players over 21 in your matchday squad.

Will be a great exposure for these guys to play against top clubs from all over Europe. No disrespect to the other teams, but I personally am looking forward to the Bilbao game. I hear their youth system is one of the best. Would be interesting to see how our young guns hold up against them.

We saw the result of Bilbaos academy in the europah last season, an excellent team all produced locally in the basque playing sweet football, real pleasure to watch, so yeah I'm with E=G should be a great fixture.

These kids should be allowed to develop quietly, without any fuss and hype. There is so much exposure nowadays to such games, I'm not sure its beneficial to their development.

prits, it's for this very reason that there is much hype around this series that I think this is a good idea. The players get exposed to the hype at an early age and that makes them the stronger for when they face such hype at first team level. Yes, some of the fickle ones will fall by the wayside but that's what we want don't we. We don't want the fickle ones to come through but the strong ones, both mentally and physically. Too often, it's happened to us that we've seen players coming through with abundance of talent but zero application. Look at Vela and JET for examples. The exposure to the hype will ensure that such players do not come through. Only those who are physically talented enough but more importantly, mentally strong will come through.

I'd ask you to google Sonny Pike. Hype should be something they are introduced to gradually.

I don't agree with a word you said, EG. We're just going to have to disagree.

I did google Sonny Pike, LD. Interesting read. Ok, maybe I was wrong about the exposure to hype thing. But there is still a case to be made for players like Vela, JET, who need some sort of mental toughness screening before they really step out at first team level.
