Vermaelen & Arteta Named Captain & Vice-Captain
With the departure of Robin van Persie, the captain`s armband was without owner once again.
Since Tony Adams retired we`ve had a succession of captain`s chosen only for them to depart soon after. Vieira, Henry, Gallas, Fabregas and now he who shall not be named. It`s a worrying trend.
Of course it`s not a curse of any kind, more in that Arsene has, more recently, used the captain`s armband as a carrot dangled to try and entice a player to commit more to the club (with the possible exception of William Gallas), but with the announcement that Thomas Vermaelen has been name the new club captain as expected I think that has changed a little.
Vermaelen proved this summer that it is possible to extend an Arsenal contract with minimum fuss if you really want to stay. With another four years on his deal I don`t foresee him going anywhere soon.
Mikel Arteta has been named vice-captain, which is also pretty cool.

A no-brainer, if you ask me. It just followed the natural trend, as expected. Another reason I believe Vermaelen will be captain for the long term is because (other than Gallas) he is the first Defender to be chosen since Tony Adams. Arteta is a worthy deputy; an honour which could easily have fallen to Song.

I think the fact that he only signed a new deal only a couple of months ago made him a good choice. Of course deals don't always amount to much, but having signed it so recently means he has no plans to go anywhere, for now.

Vice Captain could of gone to Sagna, Kozzer OR Arteta. All would have been as worthy candidates. Althoguh Arteta's greater experience probably swung it for him. It's nice to have a chest thumping CB as Captain who doesn't mind shouting down a few team mates. Atleast Vermaelen gives 100% every week, even if occasionally he drops a clanger. I like my Captains rare, with snarly teeth and the stare of the devil in their eyes.

Agree with you the SER. Leaders can be leaders with or without the armband, but there's something to be said for having a captain who looks like he'll rip you face off if you sit in his favorite chair.

Was expected. Happy that Art is vice captain.

Good to see a defensive player as captain (although that didn't work with Gallas). Let's hope that Verm can bring some organization to the team, plus some inspiration.
