AW: 'We Are In for a Defender and a Midfielder.'

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he is still in the market for two more players before the transfer window closes on 31st August. With Alex Song's move to Barcelona sealed, it looks increasingly like Nuri Sahin will come in from Real Madrid, but the Arsenal manager intriguingly added that he was in the market for a defender too.

'We are looking to bring one more midfielder in of course, and maybe one defender as well because we still feel we are short in some positions,'

With five first team centre backs still on the books (though Squillaci is surely not longed for the club) and Miquel as a 5th choice centre half and two full backs on each side, it will be very interesting to see what and whom we look to add at the back.

I think the media speculation has been pretty accurate recently and that if I had to guess the players we'd bring in would be Sahin and the excellently named Angel Rangel.

Who is this Angel Rangel fellow you have been on about, Rocky. Guess I should look him up. Cool name.

Our centre back options have more depth and quality than the full back ones so one would guess that a backup to Sagna would be high on AW's agenda. Great news that the club is in for atleast two moe players. Many squad players are yet to be moved on so many departures could be expected over the next 10 days as well.

rangel as good as he can be is woefully short of pace - i live in swansea and ive seen first hand rangel being roasted by championship wingers

It was rumoured the other day that we would be taking Angel Rangel as part of the Bartley sale. I don't know anything about him other than he has the best name ever.

great technichal player i remember when martinez signed him when swansea were championship fodder and stating that if he had more pace one of the spanish big boys would have had him - and i agree its a very good name almost as good as ricky van wolfswinkle

I agree, DF that right back is the area that seems to be the one that AW is mentioning. Great that we are still in the market for 2 players. But we need to move on several players as well to complement our buys. Also, I expect several more of our youngsters to go out on loan. That Loan watch page on looks incredibly short on words right now. And I'm not sold on Angel Rangel, Rocky. My first glimpse of him was him gifting a goal to Arshavin at the Emirates last season. He might be a decent backup but not a proper, full-fledged solution to Sagna's absence

Oh! Now, I recall the chap. A back up is what we'll be in for and Rangel may just fit that bill. He wasn't bad against us, overall but did slip up against us, to allow Arshavin in on goal.

Anybody else feel that the mooted swap for Philip Mexes for Bendtner would be good business? Quality player that can play RB and CB?

We should be going for Tiote or Cabaye to plug the gap left by the defensive side of Song, but I can bet Pardew sets us a prohibitive fee to take him even if he was only bought for less than £4m. Of course, different terms if the offer were to come from Old' red nose.

I see Adam Johnson could be on his way to Sunderland! Now there's a player I'd swap Walcott for.

I'd agree with you there Trennon.

I think sometimes attacking players who play for other teams look better than they are as we only notice them when they score a goal or create a chance. Adam Johnson is talented but suffers from poor decision making skills and can be infuriating to watch at times. I'd stick with Waclott for now.

Johnson has guile and penetration. Can anybody really be more frustrating than Walcott, a player who has no idea how to go past a player. If you dont play him beyond the defenders you wont get much out of him. Don't get me wrong, I believe Walcott can be a great player but it's seeming more and more likely that he isn't going to sign a new contract.

Johnson is up there with Jimmy Bullard, Arjen Robben and Jermain Defoe as one of the most selfish players ever. Cut inside, shoot wide. Lather, rinse, repeat. One of those players that somehow looks like he should be dangerous, but rarely actually is.

I reckon Arsene should of tried for Contreao before he joined Real Madrid. Or sign this Milo fella

Mexes is old, slower than Senderos and already past his best. Those that were screwing over Wenger's signing of Sylvstre would be foaming at the mouth seeing this guy play and then calling for Wenger's head again. Mexes is pony, atleast Bendtner has a future in the game (at whatever level I don't know) a straight swap is insulting. We are not a retirement home for crap French defenders anymore.

Looks like the Sahin to Arsenal deal is off. Same papers that reported deal done are now reporting he's off to Liverpool.
