Manchester City vs. Arsenal

The acquisition of Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla have added an extra layer of optimism and excitement around Arsenal these days, so much so even the usually anti-Arsenal media are talking us up as title contenders (which I don`t much like to be frank).

However today marks the biggest test of the season so far as we travel to current English Champions, Manchester City.

After a goalless start to the season we`ve finally found our shooting boots, scoring 10 goals in our last 4 games, conceding only 2.

Manchester City will undoubtedly be a very different opposition than we have face so far, though their defence has yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

I won`t be around to post the team selections later so I`ll take a stab at guessing who Mr Wenger will choose to keep us on our winning run.

With all the talk of Arsenal's tight defence, City's lack of clean sheets and the obvious attacking prowess of both teams, what's the reckoning we end up with a 0-0 draw? :/
No chance, fcb.
Koscielny starts in place of Thomas Vermaelen, who is out with the Flu. Surprised, though, with the inclusion of Ramsey in place of Giroud who is on the bench. It would seem the Manager is looking to keep things tight instead of our usual gong ho approach to such games. Well, good luck lads.

We've started well, stable, keeping control and playing confidently. But the fireworks are yet to begin.
Sagna is going to have his work cut out for him trying to get back his RB shirt. Jenkinson is playing so well and linking up well with the attack.
Is Arteta limping?
Mannone error! 1-0 City.
we had better chances but never took them
Gervinho's poor touch looking costly now.
gerviho is being *****e

Deserve to be ahead not behind but it's a tough place to come and I'm happy with the performance if not the scoreline. Think we can turn this around still and we have some good options on the bench in the Ox, Walcott and Giroud if some of our players start to get tired in the second half.
We looked the better side up until the goal. Such a pity when you concede so cheaply when dominating a game and knocking it about so confidently. Mind you, it's playing decisively in the final third that's the most important thing.
Gervinho's not been that bad, his touch should have been better yes for that great chance but he is working hard and his movements been quite good. Podolski should have also done better with his chance if we are going to be critical but I don't hear anyone giving him flak.
Solid performance so far. Obviously a couple mistakes have cost us, but hopefully in the second half we can get our reward and grab a point from the billionaires.
bowie - i think criticism for Gervinho's first touch is fair, you need to be doing better at that level
anyway, come on your gunners!

we're looking like we're running out of ideas here. time for some kind of change. Diaby looks tired again.
when are we gonna get a substitution?
I am not sure I unrest and the import of the changes we have just made. Taking off two hard working players when just one should do it and then either of Gervinho or Ramsey off?
Once again, I'm baffled by Arsene's substitutions this season. Gervinho has been pretty awful tonight.
Admittedly, he gets into dangerous positions and gives defenders concern. Still lacks that final decision making thing.
phw.. kos nearly gave away a goal too
gervinho is so wasteful today
Fair result, you'd say. Gervinho could have won it for us but bungled his shot. Overall, both teams have respect for one another. Now, to win against the chavs and get our groove back.
Great game of football by both sides. Gervinho plays better and we might have all three points. Still don't think we have enough for the title but we certainly could challenge for the domestic cups.
mertesacker had a great game today. arteta played well in protecting the back four too. jenkinson was quite good going forward but he needs to cut down on those stray passes in our own half. it has been like that since the beginning of the season. great team effort nevertheless
Have to say United have gained 3 points today, courtesy of some dodgy decisions by the ref.
I won't be too critical of Jenks, to be honest. He's just gone through a game against a powerful City side and kept the likes of Clichy and Aguero at bay; "retiring" Sinclair along the way. A player whose rise was described moving from primary school to the university by the mamanger. Give him a break! The one player who should get some flak will be Gervinho who could have given this game a different ending.
*described as* **manager**
I thought both Ramsey and Jenkinson were excellent today. If our forwards were a bit sharper ( both Podolski and Gervinho) we would definitely have taken all 3 points. Still looks promising, I think we can challenge for the title. We've managed a win and a draw in 2 tough away games. Hopefully beat the chavs next saturday and we will be a good position.
Good to see an Arsenal side more organised and not to have too many jitters when we don't have the ball.
gervinho was crap, that has to be admitted

i'd say, gervinho got into great position in the first place for his two sitters. he missed them but he was more significant than podolski today
We are hard to beat say we are hard to beat! Very solid respectable showing from The Arsenal. Relieved as it seemed for all our huff and puff that we weren't going to find a way through, after a 1st half where we bossed the show it really knocked the wind out of the sails to go behind as we did. After some bright performances Diaby & fivehead seemed to revert to type a little too much but this was against the team that bought the league so no point being too harsh in a fixture we lost last year. UTA.
I agree with Joe, both Podolski and Gervinho weren't at their best. Unfair to blame just Gervinho just because he is one of our whipping boys. Same thing happened with Ramsey where he was blamed for everything going wrong at one point last season but he has shown his quality when he has played this season. Jenkinson was a beast as well and if he continues to improve I can't see Sagna getting his first team spot back.
good that we do not play high line defending anymore. that has allowed us more space to attack unlike those days where we keep passing to the death in the final third. mert has benefited immensely from this new system too. the system works well because the space between the gk and the last man is reduced and allowed the last man to read the game from behind rather than making mad recovery sprint form the midfield when we were attacked. trust that bould is moulding mert into the role he used to play and building a system around that
The similiarity with Rambo & fivehead is that neither hide, both are always trying, always making themselves available, therefore both high profile when their respective moves break down, to be fair both sides had players making poor decisions and passes, I thought by his standards yaya was poor today.
Gerv also tries the same move every time when he's out wide. Sometimes he needs to look up and get the cross in.
The first half was an accomplished midfield yet we were punished on a set piece that Gibbs shouldn't have conceded in the first place. That said, cant praise our full backs enough for the improvement they have shown this season - Gibbs looks like an Arsenal left back and no words are sufficient to praise the leaps in quality Jenkinson has taken. Good point from Joe about Mertesacker benefitting from our new defensive shape this season. While Bould is no doubt doing a stellar job coaching our defense, the whole defensive system itself is much like the one AW had forged in the years 2002-2005. The team is defending from the front, the midfield is tracking the runners and the defenders are closing the gaps opposition forwards could otherwise exploit. The speed of transition we are showing from defence to attack is also vintage Arsene Wenger. Decent result overall but some regrets remain because of the profligacy of our forwards - another day we could have won but on the other hand Mannone did well for us barring the goal as well.
Good to see the players heads not dropping after going a goal down. Also love the all round responsibility of the team rather than relying on one player. Really excited by this team.
Well said, Niko, on both counts. City players made more forced and unforced errors than the Arsenal players, which is saying something. Overall, the team had a good game and it is hard to criticize, looking back. Even Giroud came on and instantly made his presence felt, dominating Kompany and Lescott in the air a few times and generally, keeping them on their toes. Another day and it would have been 3 points, but a draw at the Etihad does us little harm
All in all, that was a good display at Man City and the team should be proud of that performance. Gervinho could have won the game at the last but so could Aguero for City. Apart from his finishing he had a very good game. Mertesacker made some crucial interceptions throughout the 2nd half, and Koscielny was great too. I loved that goal! Jenkinson had his best game so far and Ramsey is improving too.
Gervinho played like his boots were two sizes too big today. He had the 3 best chances for us but just can't shoot for peanuts.
His touch let him down when he'd got a run in on goal but Gervinho didn't really miss any sitters. Likewise the Podolski attempt wasn't exactly a gilt edged chance though he might have made more of it if it had been on his left. If anything City had the clearer openings but we played pretty impressively though we do need that little spark of magic up front.
Great game from the back five, amazing to thing that we had three 1st choices unavailable! Also it was so good to see the whole team, including Walcott, celebrate our goal in that way.

Jenks & Rambo looked really good on the right. But I disagree Amos Gervinho miss a couple of real sitters. The way he shoots is with so much power that 'if it's on, it's in'. For me that is the technique of a CB not a CF.

Did anyone hear Freddie on MOTD2 say he thought our squad was too small to compete? Am I missing something? We have 3 genuinely top CB and possibly the best 4th choice in the league. A great understudy to the best RB, Santos as cover at LB is very strong and with Yennaris and Coq as cover not many can boats that quality. In MF Wilshere, Rosicky & AA haven't even played and up front Walcott and Ox can't get a start. I'm not saying I wouldn't be happy if we signed David Villa in January but that looks like strength in depth to me.

Yeah Gervinho's ability in front of goal leaves a helluva lot to be desired, fantastic work rate and gets in the right positions, but he should be approaching his peak as a player and will need a lot of work to sort that out. We really need a striker, hopefully Giroud will start on Weds and bang a few in.
I'm not about to start a Gervinho fan club but I think he gets a lot more criticism then he deserves. Yeah his finishing definitely needs work but his movement and work rate is good. He already looks much better than last season and I think he will continue to improve. He seems to have a lot of energy and never hides even when things don't go his way. Lets show some patience and I'm sure he will come good.
No 10 - yeah I noticed that Walcott celebration too and have to say it was really good to see and shows he must have genuine affection for the club. He obviously wants to stay but his advisors have probably not gone about things in the right way. I think Theo has it in him to be a goalscorer, much more so than Gervinho.
