Team News: Arsenal vs. Olympiacos

Arsenal look to make amends for their poor display against Chelsea at the weekend by taking 3 points in tonight`s Champions League group game vs. Olympiacos and there by putting ourselves in a great position in the group stages.

After a mistake ridden performance in the 2-1 home loss to The Blues Arsene Wenger`s army will be looking to bounce back immediately.

Laurent Koscielny was the cause of much wailing and gnashing of teeth at the weekend after a couple of errors gifted Chelsea the win. Many expected him to be benched tonight with the excellent Mertesacker finding his way back into the team, however BFG will miss out after suffering from illness.

This could be a blessing in disguise as Koscielny is given a chance at redemption.

Here`s the team for the game.

Arsenal: Mannone, Jenkinson, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Coquelin, Cazorla, Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho, Podolski.

Subs: Shea, Santos, Djourou, Arshavin, Ramsey, Walcott, Giroud.

Looks a strong side, tbh. The manager looks to have taken the attitude that this is a game we must win with little option for excuses. Expectedly, Coquelin slots in for Diaby/Arteta (I suspect Arteta will play a little bit further up the pitch tonight. Well, one can only wish the side good luck then.

At work. Won't be able to watch it Live but i have my DVR to get a full taste of the game.

The rain pouring so relentlessly can't be such a good thing, can it? We need to get the transition from back to forwards right; yet to test their defenders or keeper and we should have by now.
Naijagunner
This is just too even for comfort. I think we need a proper top striker who will always be in and about the box, waiting for crosses and keeping CBs pinned back. Gervinho, for all his all-action style, loses the ball too much for that role. We need to start to impose our game or these chaps grow in confidence.
Naijagunner
That was a poor 1st half from the Arsenal. Lucky to be going in level at the break. Things need to turn around drastically for the 2nd.

1-1. Still, not convincing; this way, the Greeks will feel they have a chance in the 2nd Half. They have had more goal attempts and we have just not looked serious in defending. Going forward, we haven't been incisive and prefer just keeping possession instead of exploiting gaps that appear. It will be a very nervy 2nd half.
Naijagunner
Much better second half. Would have liked to see a more comfortable game for us seeing as we have put out our full squad, bar a couple of players, with West ham to come.

Plenty of improvements needed, but result in the bag, so thats a relief. I was nervous when Vermaelen attacked at least 3-4 times in the 2nd half, wondering what he was doing there.

In that 1st half Chamberlain looked like he was too busy concentrating on doing his job right, and forgot to play football and have fun. For him his job was to keep the right side tight and cover when Jenkinson went forward - most of the time Jenkinson was further forward than him. You can't play football like that in that position or you're not going to be finding any opportunities. We played badly 1st half, but still came away winning 3-1.

Where has the exciting Oxlade-Chamberlain gone? Or, better still, what have they done with him?
Naijagunner
Just that I think tonight he was too focussed on being disciplined doing the job that's been asked of him of the manager and just forgot to play. That's understandable - you want him to be disciplined, but he needs to remember to enjoy his play as well. It's only when you're enjoying playing that you'll produce your best stuff. Some of the most talented footballers never made it big because they lost their love of the game.

Second half was much much better than the first. 1st half was woeful, but the boys picked themselves up and did a good job. Superb finished from Rambo. Gervinho was my man of the match.
Rocky7
Was also very impressed with Giroud when he came on. Worked hard, got stuck in and made a difference. Unlucky not to score.
Rocky7
Yeah, Giroud struck those 2 chances really well, very unlucky.

First half we were very poor but if its true that several players as well as Per were suffering from illness it may explain the sluggish start.
