Team News: Schalke vs Arsenal

Arsenal`s attempt to turn-around our current slump couldn`t be too much more difficult as we face Schalke away in the Champions League tonight.

Schalke made mince meat of at Ashburton Grove in the last CL game of the group stages and the normally tougher away game comes on the back of a humiliating defeat to Manchester United and our worst start to the season after 10 games in Arsene Wenger`s reign.

Morale is at an all time low in N5 as everyone is pointing their fingers at everyone else in an attempt to find someone to blame. But as we all know there`s nothing quite like a good hearty win in football to help you forget all your troubles.

In team news, Theo Walcott replaces Aaron Ramsey whilst Laurent Koscielny takes the place of the favourite whipping boy Andre Santos, presumably seeing Thomas Vermaelen moving to left back.

Let`s see how the team lines up.

Arsenal: Mannone, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Arteta, Wilshere, Cazorla, Podolski, Walcott, Giroud.

Subs: Shea, Santos, Djourou, Jenkinson, Coquelin, Arshavin, Chamakh.

Or, could it be Bacary to LB and Kos at RB, where he has played in the past? All in good time, I guess.

Going to be a keenly contested game. COYG!!
Naijagunner
0-2! Composure now, lads.
Naijagunner
What a difference having a left back who is not overweight and can actually move makes. LB is not Vermaelen's best position but he looks much better than Santos there.

Shakey start, decent middle, and a silly end. The Arsenal way.
Rocky7
Shocking decision from the ref to stop play no wonder Podolski was fuming. Should have been out third goal that. Mannone has had a good game, credit to the lad.
bowiecokemirror
Finely balanced now, at 2-2. We must get that 3rd goal. We must show we want this.
Naijagunner
On paper ... a good result ... after watching the game ... very very disapointed.

What is with Wenger's unwillingness to make a tactical substitiution? Is he so convinced at his own team selection that he's unwilling to admit a different player might make it better? Also, I'd swear Walcott was a striker playing on the wing. If I didn't know who Walcott was, watching him play I'd still say he's a striker playing on the wing.

Les - did you see the bench? We had nobody on there that would enable AW to make a tactical substitution.
Rocky7
Vastly improved performance from the atrocious home leg and the insipid utd showing thouh, gutting to throw away such a good lead esp allowing them back in with the last kick of the half.

I don't think I've seen us just lump the ball out of defence as often as we did in this game for many years. Showed little real control but Podolski looked better without Santos filling his space. Vermaelen still looked poor though and was little more than nuisance value really. In truth they had enough clear chances to have won and we didn't have enough control to have deserved more.

A point has looked like a good result tonight, considering the week we've had. Thumbs up to Don Vito. We do need to improve on keeping the ball more; we lost the ball quite a few times with Cazorla a guilty party.
Naijagunner
At least not another morale-sapping defeat. Injury list and squad size a major worry though because we'll run these players into the ground whilst the others are forever 'two weeks away'.
Gooner_Vin
.......and when we kept thumping it up-field, with no definite intended recipient. Something for Wenger to work on.
Naijagunner
On the positive side, Vita was immense tonight 2 or 3 top class saves. Really kept us in the game.
Rocky7
It is looking bleak for Man City in CL now, isn't it? Not that we are out of the woods, with Olympiakos to come, but they are EPL champions who made defending a strong point last season. Interesting situation.
Naijagunner
If they really went for the win at 2-2 i thin we would've lost, credit to Mannone. Wenger really doesn't trust his squad at all does he? His in game management is just hope for the best, he's signed every single one of these players but doesn't trust them to come on for a Wislhere who's clearly shattered and was well into the "red zone" last time he played for us.

It was a very good point for us - Schalke was clearly the better side, and Mannone was man of the match for me - won us the point today. Vermaelen had a stinker - such a poor 1st half. He is a very marginal improvement on Santos right now. On a positive note, we got some luck with the 1st goal and looked to regain some belief on the attacking front, despite Cazorla having a poor game. We did not control mid field again (despite many thinking that a trio of Arteta, Wilshere & Cazorla should be 1st choice). This is a good start to regaining some form and belief. I don't expect our fluency to be found in 1 game - expect more of this for the next 2 games, and if we can scrape some results together, then we can look to build on that.

Arshavin at least. Even if he's not first team he's still a player that's capable of making a difference, he's shown that on various occassions. How are we even expecting to offload him if we don't play him in a situation like that? Podolski is starting to look worryingly close to burnout as well... Anyway, it's a good point in the end, Schalke do have some very good players.

Not surpised We let a nil 2 lead go. That's the way things are going for The Arsenal at the moment!!!!! After all the cheering that the defence was sorted due to the 3 Clean sheet at the start of the Season! Now They just gone back to the same old mistakes!!!!! I'm so deflated by the performances these last few weeks, and I'm not sure How Arsene going to turn things around! Sorry to be so negative, but how can one be Up beat when the team you Love, just seems to be letting you and themselves down game after game. We must Stop the Rot, starting Saturday! I've just got my ticket via ticket exchange, and there was lots of tickets available more than I have ever seen just a few days away from the actual game!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hackneyval
Jack Wilshere has been selected to the England squad for a Friendly game, against the preference of Wenger and many fans. Maybe, had Wenger not made public his preference, Roy may have looked away; who knows? Whatever the case, I just hope an understanding was worked out for playing time and such detail.
Naijagunner
Gaining a 2 goal lead in the 1st place is certainly not how things are going for the Arsenal at the moment, given that our 1st shots on goal came after the 90th minute in 2 successive games.

6th.
