'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Arsene Talks Left Backs

In his pre Blackburn press conference, Arsene Wenger spoke about the two left backs he began his season with. When discussing Kieran Gibbs' recent injury, the boss spoke about the need for him to put the ailment behind him psychologically, as much as anything.

'"He is determined to come back as quickly as possible," the manager said. "He`s a bit down because it was a big blow to him. It happened at the moment he played his best football.

"You always know that to play your best game, the confidence in your body is vital. As long as nothing happens to you, you don`t even question yourself.

"As soon as that happens repeatedly, it`s a problem for a top-level sportsman. I hope he will get over that very quickly. It gets you down. It`s difficult to be injured every time you play at your best.

"This is always a good period to build up the strength of a player - when he is injured. We have some experience in doing that and I am confident he will come back even stronger, but it will take him a while to get his complete confidence back in his body."

Meanwhile, Wenger reasons that he sent Santos on loan to build confidence. Interestingly, he suggested that the Brazilian may have a better chance of reincarnating himself at the Gunners as a winger,

"He moved because he'd lost a bit of confidence and he needs to play," Wenger said. "He's a guy who's a very good football player, but he didn't get enough games.

"He's more at ease in my opinion on the left of midfield, where there's a lot of competition. He will be back at the end of July, and of course he can have a future at Arsenal. That depends as well on the ins and outs during the summer."

Santos made his debut for Gremio last night, alongside fellow debutants Adriano and Hernan Barcos, fellow new acquisition Welliton was on the bench, but the Brazilian side stumbled to a 2-1 home defeat to Chilean champions Hauchipato.

It is a shame about Gibbs. He was playing very well and looked a certainty to replace Cole in the national team. Not only does he have to overcome his injury he now has to displace an international class full back who is just coming into his prime and will be at his peak over the next 2 or 3 seasons or so. It's good problem for the club to have and hopefully a strong motivational factor for Gibbs. Santos was always more of a wing back in the Brazilian 'lateral' style than a full back, not that Arsenal full backs are recruited for the defensive foremost. I can't see Wenger changing his format enough to justify bringing Santos back but he is a very good football player - just one that doesn't fit anymore.

It is a shame but not an unpredictable one, it's good that Wenger's got someone in for the here and now and not relying on perpetually injured players not to get injured. I'm not sure he'd replace Cole in the national team, I think Baines will be first choice LB for a little while if and when he usurps Cole. Santos does look like a very good football player (on Hackney Marshes), i'll give you that.

Gibbs needs to have an entire season injury free, for any sort of confidence to build, both for himself and for fans. His rhythm is being disrupted and it's understandably frustrating.

Very rough on Gibbs, but the confidence should stay with him and it won't take him long to get back up to speed and continue his improvement when he is healed.

At his best, I do rate Gibbs as 3rd best LB in the England side; I feel he can return and stake a claim for the 1st team shirt at Arsenal. I have not seen enough of Nacho but you can see Gibbs has something more to offer. As for Santos, I can only hope he does well enough at Gremio to be retained permanently. There is just too much competition in the left midfield at Arsenal and he may not be up for it.

Of course, with the impending retirement of Cole, it should be a straight fight between Gibbs and Baines.

I don't really watch enough of Everton to form an informed opinion on this myself, but I do wonder if Baines' reputation is inflated by the fact that he hits a good setpiece. Which is nice, but is he actually good at marking, tackling, intercepting and all that jazz? I mean, I don't really know, he might be. Every time I watch him he strikes me as perfectly decent, but not amazing by any means in general play.

Going forward this season, No one compares to Gibbs. We has been on fire for arsenal. To me , he is the best attacking fullback in BPL.

Going forward? Going forward Baines is actually a goal threat, look at his return this year. His delivery is exceptional as are his set pieces. Quite a solid defender as well.
