Interesting to read the match previews in contrast to the post match appraisals of our win away to Fenerbahce last night. The Telegraph had described them as 'dangerous opponents' which we had to deal with against a 'background of negativity' while the Mail told us 'Arsenal will do well to resist the intense atmosphere and do enough to maintain the possibility of qualification'. Pointing to the contrast between Fenerbahce being active in the transfer market having strengthened while Arsenal have done little the Mirror said 'They certainly have the motivation, as well as the quality, to make the next ten days very uncomfortable for Arsenal.' There was little doubt that many were anticipating a slip up but the intense atmosphere Arsenal had to deal with was more in the negativity surrounding the club than anything created in the stadium.
In the event the team handled that in the best way possible by emerging with a comprehensive win which, provided they remain professional, should see us through to the CL group stages for the 16th consecutive year. A virtual trophy in itself! Ramsay gave a man of the match performance and Walcott always looked threatening. It was Theo's mastery of Kadlec that set up the first goal with Gibbs timing his run to perfection. That same mastery brought the penalty and third goal that Giroud comfortably put away. Volkan will take some blame for conceding the second but that said it was a well struck and well placed shot which despite a low full length dive had enough force and direction to think he did well enough to get a hand to it.
As Fener tried to get back into the game they had a few reasonably speculative attempts a couple of which Szscesny dealt with well, bravely in one instance the marks of which he carried on his throat for the rest of the game. His battle scars were trumped by the gash that Kos had stitched up following a painful boot in the face which saw him led off the pitch and taken to hospital. A couple of other Fener attempts sailed over the bar which had they have been on target might have made next week`s job a little tougher. Overall though, even with Cazorla less effective out wide and Jack still like a rebuilt engine running itself in, it was a spirited performance that might have raised belief levels a much needed notch.
Such is the atmosphere surrounding the club at present though that we are exhorted not to get carried away with the positive result though we are expected to wallow in negativity which for some curious reason is usually deemed to be more 'realistic' than positivity. So the Telegraph's pre-match 'dangerous opponents' have now become 'technically very limited' and a 'quality' team which just 24 hours earlier the Mirror declared had the potential to make the next ten days very uncomfortable for us, were really just 'a second rate team' after all.
In football realism is boring and the highs and lows always exaggerated which is much of the fun of it all I suppose.
