The feel good factor is very evident at present as we sit at the top of a nascent league. There should be positive vibes around the club given the form Rocky has highlighted in the Napoli match discussion post which shows a record of 19 wins 1 draw and 1 loss in the last 21 games - including a club record 12 away wins. Yet it's hard not to forget that run stretching, as it does, over the last third of last season also straddled what was a pretty negative summer.
The one loss in that sequence, to Villa in the opening game of the season, brought a simmering discontent at the failure to spend money, supporters stock resolution to any crisis, to boiling point. One supporter, giving full vent to his ire with the manager, owner, board and players on ArsenalFanTV, was lauded as an internet hero representing the majority opinion among Arsenal supporters. It wasn't majority opinion of course, just a popular one, but much of the media has been happy to feed on the sentiment with the Arsenal Supporters Trust, strangely silent since, demanding that discussions to extend Wenger's contract be halted.
The acquisition of Ozil certainly changed the mood though curiously the club has so far spent less on transfers in this season than in either of the previous two. As valuable an addition as he can be though Ozil, whose contribution was a little more muted against Swansea, has only played in 3 of those 21 games. So the crisis we were in clearly wasn't solved by Ozil. Yet he has most certainly given us a lift.
We have experienced this before of course when our previous record signing Andrey Arshavin was introduced amidst great fanfare and an exciting individual cameo at Liverpool in a game in which we were battered from pillar to post but earned a point thanks to that cameo. The glitter soon wore off though. Transfer signings are like chocolate biscuits. Shortly after you've had one you'll want another. As exciting a player as Ozil can be his recruitment will not sustain us for long. The players we have recruited in previous windows and those we've nurtured over a few years will be more important.
The longer this present run continues the greater belief will grow - and that's what this team needs. Not only the confidence and belief of everyone around them but that that confidence and belief is robust and supportive. At times, as it was this summer, it has been too fragile and superficial. To kick on now probably requires a more sanguine perspective to the next 'crisis' whenever it occurs.
