Draxler Transfer Blocked By Schalke, Not Wenger

Arsene Wenger came in for some fierce criticism following the failure to land Julian Draxler in the January transfer window.

Rumours had been rife that Wenger was close to signing the promising German and excitement ensued.

Unfortunately the transfer never materialised leading much wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Arsenal faithful not to mention fingers being pointed at Arsene Wenger for apparently returning to his penny pinching ways.

However Draxler himself has come out and claimed he was ready to leave but was blocked by the Schalke gaffer.

"I wanted to go and had a good offer to leave."

"But the Schalke manager Horst Heldt said no to the transfer and would not let me go."

I think a few apologies might be due.

I don't really understand all the angst about this signing. If we had brought him in many fans would have been whinging that he isn't the striker we 'need' and that he's just a kid and not the finished article - yet they can still whinge that we didn't sign him! If we had signed him he would have not made any really difference to what happens this season anyway. He's far more about what happens over the next few seasons than this one. But it does seem as though Schalke weren't going to let him go in this window, reasoning quite sensibly, that whatever the best offer in January would be they could top it in the summer. Yet another transfer window media circus load of noise about very little.

I am careful to note that in all of these quotes (including others I have gleaned), no mention is made of ARSENAL or Wenger, so how do we know reference isn't being made to another club? Recall some comments made by Horst Heldt sometime before deadline day about not having seen anyone from the club.

I'm really ignorant about this stuff so can someone please clarify? Draxler has a release clause. If any club meets that release clause & Draxler actively wants to leave, can Schalke do anything to stop the deal? I thought if a RC is met and the player wants to leave, the owning club can't stop the deal. Which means no club offered enuf to meet the RC. Happy to be corrected.

Just to add to that: if indeed my interpretation is correct, then AW did not offer a bid large enuf for Schalke to sell Draxler.
jaelle
Jaelle, the story so far, has been that Wenger didn't value the lad at 37m. The idea of going for the player in the winter window was to have the chance to make an offer less than the release clause, as (my understanding is that) that clause becomes active in the summer.

Team news is out; Poldi and the Ox start along with Monreal. I leave Rocky to come out with the details;-)
Naijagunner
Good to see poldi is starting today. Hope he gets off some good shots in the 1st half.

Draxler's release clause has been in place since summer 2012 so anyone wanting to trigger it has had plenty of time to do so. His contract becomes unprotected in summer 2015 when he can 'cancel' his contract by giving notice to Schalke 15 days after the end of the season. The fee will be the club prepared to pay the most which may or may not be as much as the present release clause. If they let him get to an unprotected stage it may well be less. In order for Schalke to be sure of getting the most out of Draxler they still have two transfers windows in which to do a deal. A deal this window has always been unlikely.
Amos.
Oh yeah? I read it someplace the reason for the negotiations in the window was because the 37m clause only kicks in in the summer. Oh well. What do I know?
Naijagunner
For all the talk about draxler, I don't think wenger rates him. Be used him as a decoy for the press when he signed ozil. The press still think it was genuine interest from arsenal and wenger is not one to douse any fake rumours as long as it keeps other clubs away from his primary targets.
nna
What, like Kim Kallstrom;-)
Naijagunner
I read yesterday that it was Byern who blocked the sale of Draxler. There was, of course, no mention of how exactly they could do this.
