Match Discussion - Spurs (a)

Arsenal might have been knocked out of the Champions League in midweek, however the manner in which we were defeated is nothing to be ashamed of.

Indeed there were many positives to be taken from the game and carried forward into the big North London Derby this weekend.

The Gunners face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday after both teams played in Europe this week. However Arsenal will have had two extra days rest prior to the game as at the time of writing Spurs are getting ready to face Benfica in the Europa League.

Not only will Spurs be a little more knackered than our boys, but the Lilywhites are currently going through a little emotional turmoil, which culminated in Tim Sherwood having a bit of a public breakdown last weekend.

He doesn`t trust his players and they don`t trust him.

This is NLD however, which means literally anything can happen. Do you expect Arsenal to bring home 3 points? Will Adebayor score or get sent off? Can Spurs get to the end of the day without their manager needing the help of a psychologist?

Talk about everything NLD related in the Vital Arsenal match discussion thread which you can find here.

This is the North London derby and to expect the spuds to be knackered from the small matter of a Europa league game at home is expecting too much. They would be up for the game as we would be and the midweek exertions would have nothing to do with it for either club. Sherwood's public outburst may help them step it up but we know we would get the 3 points because we are just that bit the better team.

It doesn't look like his outburst is helping them right now ... currently 1-0 down at home to Benfica. Heh.

1-2 now;-)

Finished 3-1 ... they look more defensively frail than we used to look. The Ox will put the fear of god into them. He's on fire at the minute full of confidence, he'll be the man to watch!

The Benfica result won't have much effect on the outcome of this game. The NLD has a motivation all of its own. If Monreal is fit we should have a reasonably stable defensive pick. Could go with the same side that beat Sunderland a couple of weeks back but with Ox in place of Wilshere.

Spurs were so bad against Benfica, they are currently all over the place at the moment. Really need to push them aside and take all 3 points on Sunday. Possible injuries to Sandro and Ade from their game, likely one or two other could cry off rather than face us the moral is so low at their club at the moment.

Spuds have always been low on morals! :) They won't have any problem with morale going into a NLD. They'll be chasing their tails off trying to win the bragging rights. We need to use that against them and while matching the energy they'll put in be more controlled and clinical at the same time. It'll be a very difficult game. It always is.

haha Amos, spelling correction noted! ;-)

The NLD is the only thing that makes this a tough game, if we're serious about maintaining a title charge then 3 points is a must!

Yeah - it's a must win right enough - they all are now! Exciting times eh!

is mike dean officiating the game? he is not gonna let us win as usual

It's remarkable how poor our PL record is with Dean in charge - one win in 15 games - a win rate of just 6.7%! That's remarkable over so many games - especially when the win rates for Chelsea, City and ManU with much the same number of games under Dean are all more than 60% and even for Spuds it's 50%. We have more than enough reason to be concerned.

There will be players for Spurs who care, but looking at them there defineately seems to be a few players who wouldn't have a clue what the NLD means to the fans if it bit them on the arse. I genuinely feel that as a collective they're not going to be as up for this as they usually are. Even the Spurs fans are saying we're going to wipe the floor with them .... and that never happens. I guess that's kind of worrying when you consider it.

Amos, is it the fact that Dean is officiating or that he's usually reffing our big games? Do you have a list of the matches he's reffed for us?

Probably cos most of our games with him in charge have been against big clubs. It's been a while since we put in a top performance at the lane, or actually is it? Maybe I just remember the results. Let's hope we get the latter, ideally with a top performance as well.

It seems those twitter stats are prior to this season. Since then he has reffed 3 games - the 0-0 draw with Chelsea and our wins over Stoke this season and Wigan at the end of last season. The one PL victory prior to that (in the last 18) though was a 5-2 home win over the Spuds but going back beyond that the record looks more reasonable (though we've never beaten spuds at WHL under Dean) so perhaps the stat is a bit selective. You can check the full results history with Dean in charge here:

Since 08/09 our record in the league with him is 40% L 40% D 20% W according to my basic sums.

Cheers Amos. I think it's safe to say that it doesn't much matter .... though don't be expecting any penalties!

Dean will be doing his best to deny us. If this were Boxing, it is the type of game to be telling your man to go fror the KO, as he would stand little chance with a points decision. So, our lads should just go for the kill. COYG!
