Gunners Confirm Red Bulls Friendly

Gunners Confirm Red Bulls Friendly

Arsenal have confirmed that they will play a pre season friendly against Thierry Henry's New York Red Bulls as part of their pre season preparations. The game will take place at the Red Bulls Arena in New Jersey on Saturday, 26th July at 5pm local time. (That will be 12noon GMT).

The friendly reunites them with club record goalscorer Thierry Henry, as well as ex Everton midfielder Tim Cahill and Ian Wright's son Bradley Wright Phillips. Arsenal insist that this is the only friendly they will play outside of Europe this coming summer.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis told Arsenal.com: "We are delighted to be visiting the United States for the first time in 25 years. We enjoy fantastic support there, and in particular in New York, so we are looking forward to providing our fans with an opportunity to watch the team play live. The fact that Thierry is the New York Red Bulls club captain makes this a particularly special fixture, and everyone involved with the club is looking forward to it."

Wenger added: "This will be a great chance to play in front of supporters who have not seen the team play before. The New York Red Bulls will be midway through their season, so they will provide a good test. Obviously it will be good to play against Thierry. He is a very special player in our club`s history and I know the players and the supporters will enjoy this very much."

Thierry Henry said: "It goes without saying that hosting Arsenal at Red Bull Arena will be a special moment for me both on a professional and personal level. As I have said before, the club is in my heart and this will be another terrific chapter in my relationship with Arsenal Football Club. Along with my team-mates, I am excited to host Arsenal in New York - one of the greatest cities in the world - and hope that Red Bulls and Arsenal fans will be able to enjoy the match.'

Seems like a slight misjudgement to me to have this in a 25k stadium with the other nearby stadia able to hold much more. Think a fair few Stateside will want in on this and a lot of Arsenal fans might fancy a weekend in NY too! It’s a shame it’s this year because I’m expecting to be in NY in the summer of 2015. That said, having to ‘put up with’ Brazil this July so I can’t grumble!

Hey Amos, would gladly oblige. LD, you're so right about the venue. It makes no sense at all to have the game at that arena.

Looking forward to it. Rumors making the round have it that we were thwarted in our efforts to play at the Yankees Stadium. Not a believer in conspiracy theories but City entered into a partnership with the mighty baseball giant the NY Yankees late last year. Right after announcing the partnership agreement Arsenal programming (the only EPL showings) vanished from the Yankees TV network (the largest regional sports network in US) only to be replaced with, you guess it, City's games. Well, there surely must be a reason for selecting the smallest venue possible.

Its unfortunate that they finally choose to come during a World Cup year when most of the first team will still be on holiday. I'll try to get tickets but won't be too heartbroken if it doesn't pan out. Hopefully they come again to a bigger venue.
