Wenger Targets Superman!

Wenger Targets Superman!

Arsene Wenger is targeting a 'super, super player' or 2 in the summer transfer window.

Wenger said a few days ago that 95% of the team is in place, and something small is needed.

Speaking to Arsenal.com ahead of today's match against Aston Villa Wenger said: "It will be maybe one or two — maximum, and then only super, super-class because we have what is needed.

'If someone is available I would always try to improve my team but the basis is inside the club.

'Of course [our situation] is frustrating but as well it is promising because we are five to six years younger than everyone else.

'I know that people want 'here and now` - we live in a society of 'here and now` - but unfortunately unless we have massive amounts of money we have to be patient.

'And I feel we are not far away from the other teams.'

It's rare for Wenger to come out and talk about transfers like this so the fact that he has could suggest that the transfers are already agreed.

He always says the same thing every summer. Two years ago he had a plan which involved buying two world class players (we signed hleb & sold vieira) & last year was the same.

The year before AG was suposed to be the year we signed Robinho& Baptista, only to have his plans thwarted by Real Madrid. ********s they are!

AG, Hleb is worldclass. PV4 was 2 years past his best.I for one am grateful that he's not an impulse buyer. Otherwise we'd be lumbered with a load of stockings. And as R7 says, Madrid were using us as there scouting system and unfortunatly we'll never have the lure of the galacticos.

I make him right. He may be a season late so this season was a right off but at least he has realised it now. In saying that I don't think anyone could have envisaged the long term injuries we have suffered this season.

It doesnt suggest anything. He says every year we will buy if the right player comes along. He is aware of his budget, and knows we cannot enter a bidding war with other clubs who have more disposable income to spend.

Apparently Gilberto would be sold for 7 mil. I hate to see him leaving though. It is a gamble as we would be sacrificing experience for potential yet again. We would have Cecs, Diaby, Denilson & Flamini as our CM (also Muamba if he is not sold). I have a hunch that Flamini may want to leave if he is to fall behind the pecking order. We wan sign Baptista on a permanent deal and we also have to think of where to place Reyes as he is most probably unwanted in Madrid. Le Boss may also try to revive Robinho career and most probably than not, we sign a GK notwithstanding Lehmann staying or not

I think Gilberto will be sold if the price is right. We will hear the usual rubbish about how we couldn't turn down such an offer & that we just couldn't match the 3-4 year deal he has been offered..................D11Gunner, I like hleb aswell but you cannot say he is world class at present. Very good, yes, but not world class.

Come on AG, that is too negative. Saying that AW will sell Gilberto is as certain as we are going to sign Buffon. Plus Gilberto has shown no signs of losing form, motivation, anything. AW for one appreciates this kind of players. If Dein met Bettega as some reports suggest it could be for many reasons. It could be for Ljungberg, Song, Flamini, Aliadiere, and yes, Gilberto. But Dein and AW are not fools and would not do anything Jose-Kenyon-Roman style backstabbing. Plus, Juve still owes us money, and is not as appealing and prestigious club as it was 2-3 years ago. So let's try to be positive a little bit. Gilberto is precious in terms of presence, experience, helping the youngsters in training etc. and AW knows that, and I believe that's why he's staying. I would not be surprised if Almunia was sold and Arsene brought someone to take over from Jens, who in turn could end up as no. 2.

On the Hleb issue I agree he has not been world class. He loses concentration often when trying to pass his way out of our own half, not a good sign. On the other hand, his skills and ability to hide the ball from the defender, turn, stop is amazing. He can only get better. Wenger will sign someone, that is for sure. Is it Ribery, Robinho, a goalie, I don't know, but surely he will address the squad. And it will be a WORLD CLASS signing.
