Transfers - Who To Believe
I have just stumbled across a very illuminating website, http://www.footballtransferleague.co.uk/, in which the statistics have been calculated for the rumour accuracy of our believed press!
So, from the website, The Mirror for all their 'reliable insider information' managed to pump out a staggering 1184 rumours since July 2006 of which only 175 turned out to be accurate, giving them an accuracy level of just under 15%.
Indeed, The 'finger on the footballing pulse' Sun managed only just over 18%, whereas over the same time period The Telegraph with 14 accurate rumours out of 35 generated topped the list with a 40% accuracy, with The Guardian following along with just under 31%.
So, at last, some tangible proof that at least SOME papers do wait until a rumour carries some genuine weight before it is published. Therefore, in these worrying times, I think we can safely say that the vast majority of Sun and Mirror proclamations can be taken with a generous handful of salt!
