Wigan vs. Arsenal

The JJB Stadium

Wigan Next On The Menu

It`s off to the excellent pie-makers of Wigan on Wednesday for the game in hand that a few short weeks ago was supposed to propel us into the fight for the Premiership title. Now the ambition is perhaps a third place finish but the result is none the less important for that.

Last season we enjoyed a rare Premiership triumph in the north-west, winning 3-2 in the corresponding fixture. Revenge was extracted in the Carling Cup semi-final.

The home side will only be half-baked. Wigan keeper Steak and Kidney Kirkland has been declared fit to play at the JJB Stadium, but Chicken and Mushroom Scharner is ruled out through suspension. Striker Cheese and Onion Heskey returns from a one-match ban but Meat and Potato de Zeeuw, Lamb Tikka Teale, Pork and Apple Todorov and Pastie Taylor are ruled out by injury.

Kolo Toure is back for Arsenal after sitting out the draw at Chelsea at the weekend through suspension, and although Gallas, Rosicky, and Henry are once again missing, our less than full-strength side will be expected to feast on their less than full-strength side.

I`ll be back after the game, hopefully with chef Wenger`s recipe for dealing with the savoury upstarts. Bon appetit!

Vital Quotes:

Wigan boss Paul Jewell on Le Boss: 'Arsene is an outstanding manager. At the moment he's building a new team.

'What we've seen this season, perhaps it is a sign of how driven he is. He is turned on by building a new team to challenge Chelsea and Man United.'

Le Boss on why Arsenal's away form has improved since last season: 'I feel we have matured and we are physically stronger.

'You could see that at Chelsea on Sunday where with Emmanuel Adebayor we could fight in areas where last year we were dominated. This year we are not.

'Now we have to show that we can do it at Wigan as well.'

Wigan Team News:

Stopper Chris Kirkland has been declared fit after he spent Saturday night in hospital with concussion.

Emile Heskey returns after his one-match ban, but midfielder Paul Scharner is suspended.

Player to watch: Henri Camera

The speedy striker has the ability to cause anyone problems when he is on form.

Arsenal Team News:

King Kolo is back after missing the Chelsea game through suspension.

Thierry Henry (hamstring), Tomas Rosicky (groin/hamstring) and William Gallas (thigh) are all close to making a return to the first team.

Lauren (knee) and Diaby (ankle) are both still some way from being fit to play.

Player to watch: Julio Baptista

The Beast could get the nod ahead of Flamini for the trip to Wigan and he will be looking to give Wenger a selection dilema ahead of Saturday's visit of Portsmouth.

Match Facts & Stats

Rob Styles will be taking the reigns for this one. he has officated one Arsenal game this season (Boro). He booked Van Persie in the 1-1 draw. He has dished out 40 yellow cards and one red in his 10 games this season.

Wigan are a mighty 4-1 to win tonight, but not as good as newcastles 14-1 to win at stamford bridge, that certainly has to be worth a punt don't it Dave ? anyway i will be tuning in after my nice cooked meal by my mates missus ! she puts the oven on and dials dominoes !
PUREGOLD
lets not give up on the title at the moment, lets not even think about it, we need to win all our remaining games this month and then lets see where it puts us, i am sure united and chelski will drop points, if not first, we can finish second, but one thing i am convinced about is that this team will be ready next season to turn chelsea over next season, dun think united will be consistent next year if they win the title this year..
luckys_10
Hopefully the beast and Theo may get a run out tonight? The Chelski match may be the turning point for us and we can now go on a good run of results.

ur all a bunch of *****
gabotheyido
come on WIGAN!!!!
THFC Keano
arsenal start walcott and baptista in what i think is oneof wengers best line ups of the season so far (if we had henry) :)
swift-ee
We haven't played the best so far, we need to stop giving the ball away and play to our stengths!
gunner-minesh
And it can't be our best yet as there's no cesc! Wenger must be resting him today but I believe we do need him as the passes arn't going thorugh.
gunner-minesh
not happy with first half. there is no cehesion or rythm but its good batista got a start. he deserves a good start with cesc on so hopefully the second half will pick up. these are teams we must defeat
mish
Good composure! 1-0 to the Arsenal! Ok we didn't play our best but we won nevertheless from a good showing and great finish by adebayor.
gunner-minesh
cesc man of the match...yeah i know he was on for like 14 mins but who cares. he got us moving.
mish
Big big big three points..
luckys_10
Winning ugly for once!
iceman10
good away rtesult thre...

as i have been saying for the past couple of months, we need to learn to win ugly ! saying that however, Cesc is amazing, 2 great balls, 1 goal as a result. the tackle was perfect as replays showed, even glenda was purring about cesc. my only problem is that if wenger is going to rest players, you don't have them on the bench or you play your strongest team first, get the result and then take them off. great 3pts
PUREGOLD
must agree PG if we had the strongest team on first then rest them for 2nd half we'd have probably won by 2 or 3
mish
baptista looked out of tune tonight.
hazzagooner
The 0-0 draw possibility was hard to stomach. However, thanks to Adebayor who delivered at the very moment when it mattered the most. Well Done Ade!!!!
SWPACIFIC
And the result was a much needed victory for The Gunners.

poor game as far as the amount of clear cut chances created, and excitement on show,it was obvious that we missed the killer passing of cesc, but he changed the game with the 20 minutes that was given to him,but the big difference was the fact that we made advantage of one of the very few chances that we created.ive said before that in this game teams normally create 2-3 good scoring opportunites, and they take them,we on the other hand create 10-15 chances and waste them,it was very good to see our clinical killer instinct return, babtista had one chance, hit the target, keeper saved, adebayor had three chances missed the connection, keeper bravely smothered, and the one on one, which he put away, there are a lot views on adebayor, some rate him others dont,i think he is doing very well,he is going to get better with games and confidence climbing, but he does the job,he links up well, holds the ball, feeds other players, closes down, and most importantly he scores,i would like to see his stats on chances to goals, just to see how he is progressing, anyway well done the boys!
fran merida
Back in to the Champions League mix. That's more like it!
sandgroanun
and i would like to say well done to paul jewell, who was very honest in his assesment of the game, and was spot to mention fabregas executed a perfectly timed clean tackle, unlike the views of certain pundits
