VfB Stuttgart vs. Arsenal

A Stadium

30th July

7.30pm

VfB Stuttgart v Arsenal

Arsenal starts a more serious pre-season fixtures tonight versus VfB Stuttgart. This is the game many Arsenal supporters have been waiting for because most of the starters will get their first chance to shine in these early season games. This match will commemorate the re-naming of Stuttgart`s stadium from the Gottlieb Daimler Stadium to the Mercedez-Benz Arena. This newly named stadium will most likely be filled to the capacity of 55,896 for this high-profile friendly fixture.

This game starts a run of extremely difficult pre-season fixtures that will no doubt push our team to the max and have us ready to go on all fronts for the first game of the season against West Brom. Has anyone ever seen a harder pre-season schedule? We will play the likes of Stuttgart, Real Madrid, Juventus, Sevilla, and Ajax in the space of two weeks!

Vital Quotes:

Van Persie has spoken out today about his plans for the game tonight and a former Gunner in particular. 'I am hoping to play well so we will see what it brings,' said Van Persie.

'Jens is a fantastic goalkeeper. He is almost 39 but he is still a fantastic goalkeeper and a nice man as well. He has lots of humour so I always have a good laugh with him, and I am happy he is still in the game because he's a real professional."

Robin went on to say 'It's good fun to see him and I hope I get the chance to score many goals against him like I did in training!'

Abou Diaby has talked about the Austrian training camp in general. 'It's good, we came here to prepare well,' said Diaby.

'It is 10 days together and we have built the foundation for the season ahead. We are prepared and we have tried to work a lot, to practice our best game. It has been good for us.'

VfB Stuttgart Team News:

The Bundesliga 2007 champions have already played a couple of competitive games this summer as they advanced to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup. They beat Russian side FK Saturn Ramenskoje three to nil on aggregate.

Player to watch: Jens Lehmann

Of course Jens Lehmann is the obvious choice for player to watch for Stuttgart, as ironically the first time the mad German will line up for his new team it will be against his former one. I will be saddened to see the big man not in an Arsenal jersey today, but this is football and players move on. I can only hope the traveling Gooners will give him a very warm reception.

Also the Arsenal defense will have to be aware of the goal scoring threat from Mario Gomez, but if he plays like he did for Germany in the Euros we should have no problem controlling him.

Arsenal Team News:

Arsenal signed Frenchugese player Amaury Bischoff this morning on a Bosman deal, but he will not join the squad till tomorrow when they return to Austria. We will see the anticipated return of the main players tonight, and we should also finally see the debut of French playmaker Samir Nasri.

Player to watch: Adebayor

Tonight Adebayor will most likely make his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt since all of his acrimonious comments this summer about his possible transfer. Personally I will welcome Ade back into the team because I still think that he has the ability to become a world class player, especially at his tender age. But it will be up to him to regain some of his credibility with the Arsenal faithful. He will have to work very hard, even harder than usual to do this. In the end it will be Adebayor`s attitude towards everything, on and off the pitch, that will determine his future at this club.

I suspect that Arsenal will win this one by a tight score line of 2 to 1. Adebayor and Van Persie to grab the goals for Arsenal and Gomez to continue our trend of conceding in these preseason games.

I hope everyone enjoys the game tonight. I fly out to London after the match to watch the Emirates Cup! Come on Arsenal!!

Wow the first Denilson interview in English. So he's spent some time improving it when he's out injured. And why do Robson and Groves keep ruling Denilson out as a DM?! Arsene has obviously put him in that position alongside Nasri today and it makes sense, given the options we have.

Lou for some reason they would much rather see Diaby partner Cesc and as you said completely rule out Denilson.

I honestly don't know, very interesting, but it's not the first time this happened in pre-season games (Almunia also wore the armband once or twice last summer). I suspect Arsene just wants to make Gallas sweat a little bit and grab it with both hands when he formally tells the guy he'll extend his appointment as captain or something? I personally think it's enough that Gallas has acknowledged he made some mistakes and said he'll learn from them.

Not a bad half considering Stuttgart has already played two competitive matches and this is the first match for Nasri, Ade, RvP, Gallas, and Eboue (I think). Sure it's only 45 minutes but Nasri already looks like he has all the dribbling skill of Hleb but is not as timid in the final third. Theo is looking pretty sharp too. Ade has been offside 4 or 5 times already but the linesman on the far side seems to be a 'homer', calling everything that's even close.

Denilson has much more chance of coming into the team as he is more naturally defensive and has a better attitude of playing that role. LOL. Fair enough Lou, but we all keep saying Wenger sees something in Eboue that makes him worth keeping. RM isn't it. RB apparently isn't either. He can't shoot and holds the ball too long when he attacks, but he is fair on the defensive side and he does work hard when given a task. Anyway, I'm not sure if it was just a thought or an actual fear.

I know Smith, I actually thought Eboue did not bad at all, in his first game this summer. I just keep hoping to find a guy have the discipline to protect the back 4, the passing ability to fit into our play and distribute balls and preferably the physical strength to complement Cesc. If Arsene tells us now "Eboue has all these, plus a bit of pace." I'll still believe him. Seriously. Just that I never thought of him as a candidate before and he was often awful last year.

And DM, unlike RW, is not an ideal position in which we do too many experiments. If Arsene says it's the new signing, great, if he says it's Denilson, ok we trust him. But I'm not sure if we should do yet another experiment with Eboue. Ideally I'd really like to have a stable back 6 (including DM), not too many changes, with a clear pecking order. e.g. you tell Traore to understudy Clichy, Eboue/Hoyte Sagna, Senderos/Djourou Kolo/Gallas, Fabianski Almunia. Not too much tinkering although our players are versatile.

That all makes sense and I'm of the same mindset, I'm still just a bit confused about the DM situation. I really did hope against hope that Wenger would go in for Barry. I think he's quality and although I trust our youngsters I think an older head who has experienced real disappointment can be very important to a team when the going gets tough. I like Denilson but I see him more as an understudy to Cesc than his complement. Diaby has just never done anything for me at all. I can see some of the youth coming up slotting in there but I think that is at least a year, probably two, away from being a viable option. We've got some great creative players, we just need someone content being the guy to pick up the pieces of a broken attack and stand strong when others charge forward.

Hey you don't have to bring in the news, it's always nice to just chat and let us know what you think. We've got quite a few Gooners from the US and North America too. You can certainly find someone to chat with when you go online in your time zone. MrA, Arsene must have a few options other than Barry, although he could be the "next best" after Yaya on Arsene's list. I'll keep hoping we'll somehow get a deal with Barca before 31st August!

An excellent early pre season work out for Arsenal with half a first team against a very good quality opposition. Very much worth it!
