Dynamo Kyiv vs. Arsenal

Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium

On Sky

Dynamo Kyiv v. Arsenal

Arsenal begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday against Dynamo Kyiv, in the second part of their three match road trip. After an up and down Champions League run last year, Arsenal will hope that they can be much more consistent this year and take the next step up to lifting the trophy with the big ears. The Champions League schedule makers were kind to Arsenal when they made this game in September rather than the bitter cold Russian winter. This will not be a home game for Dynamo, because their normal stadium, the Olimpiyskiy Stadium, has been demolished so it can be improved in preparation for the next Euro`s in four years time, so the game will be played at Lobanovsky Dynamo Stadium.

Arsenal`s attack has been firing on all cylinders ever since they stuttered against Fulham. Since that game, in three games Arsenal has outscored their opponents 11-0. Last year in the Champions League, Dynamo Kyiv was the whipping boy in group F, losing all six games, including an 8-2 aggregate loss to Manchester United. Their goal differential was abysmal as well, giving up an astonishing 19 goals and only scoring 4. With Arsenal`s attack in perfect harmony as of late, Kyiv will have a difficult time improving on their defensive record from last year.

Vital Quotes:

Adebayor talked about the coming Euro campaign. 'We have every chance to win the Champions League with Arsenal,' Adebayor declared.

'I had the chance to be in the final with Monaco, but I was on the bench and I could see all these special things going on.

'Then with Arsenal, I could not play because I was cup-tied and in my head it was difficult - but now I have a chance to play so there is an argument for me to be more hungry than most of my team-mates.

'However, I am not the only one. Cesc [Fabregas] and Kolo [Toure] lost in the [2006] final as well and so all these players would like to win it in their career.

'These are the things that we are going to pin together as brothers and help each other on the pitch and off the pitch and try to achieve something this season.'

Arsene also talked about the group stages. "It is a tough place for us to go," he said. "It is maybe a little bit better for us to play earlier but I am convinced it will still be a massive challenge. We`ll go there and try to win the game but even if we take a point then for me it will be a good start.

"Dynamo Kyiv knocked out Spartak Moscow 4-1, 4-1 [in each leg of their qualifying game]. When you know Spartak Moscow and how strong the Russian League is at the moment that means it is a tough draw. I saw the first game at Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Kyiv were really impressive.

"Our group has four teams who are all used to playing in the Champions League - Fenerbache, Porto, Dynamo and us. Anyone can take points off anyone that`s why for me it`s very important we start well in this game."

Dynamo Kyiv manager Yury Semin was concerned about the form Arsenal`s attack is in, with Adebayor in particular. 'Arsene Wenger's side play an easy natural game, and enjoy their football,' he told Dynamo's official website. 'They have many young and talented footballers, all very technically gifted.'

'We knew very well prior to this the capabilities of the Arsenal forward,' said Semin. 'But we will not be putting a man-marker on him. Adebayor plays all over the pitch, and in every zone there will be one of our players to meet him.'

Dynamo Kyiv Team News:

Kyiv will be without Moroccan defender Badr El Kaddouri, who has to serve a one match suspension, but everybody else should be fit for the Ukrainian club.

Player to watch: Masksim Shatskikh

Masksim Shatskikh has been a scoring threat for Kyiv for a long time. He has been at the club since 1999, in those years he has scored 96 goals in 209 league appearances, and he also has scored 11 goals in 8 Champion League seasons. With Arsenal`s defense still looking shaky, Shatskikh will hope he can get his name on the score sheet.

Arsenal Team News:

Clichy and Eboue have both been passed fit to be included in the squad, but Frenchman Samir Nasri has been ruled out for at least one more game. Silvestre is once again not fit to take part in the squad, and Eduardo, Diaby, Rosicky and Bischoff are all still out.

Almunia will start in goal, with Clichy, Sagna, Gallas, and Toure in the defense. I can see Theo Walcott getting rested, but that`s only if Eboue can start. If that is the case, then Carlos Vela will probably slot in on the left side of midfield with Cesc Fabregas and Denilson in the middle of the park, though I would like to see Song take over for Denilson. Adebayor and Van Persie will be the forwards.

Player to watch: Emmanuel Adebayor

The Kyiv coach has expressed his concern about how his team is going to deal with Adebayor and rightly so. Dynamo has never seen a striker like Adebayor, who has it all physically: power, pace, strength, and height. I see Ade causing their defense all sorts of problems in this one.

Ref Watch: Luis Medina Cantalejo(ESP)

Luis Cantalejo is a Spanish referee who is a very experienced official and rarely gets involved in any controversy, though he played a pivotal part in the Zidane head butt scandal. Cantalejo was the fourth official who saw Zidane head butt Materazzi, and he told the head official to send the illustrious Frenchman off. He was also the head official in the England v. Russia game in Moscow for the Euro 2008 qualifying game.

Match Prediction:

I just can't see Dynamo slowing down the Arsenal attack in this game. But I can definitely see Kyiv scoring. 3-1 to the Gunners. Adebayor, Van Persie, and Vela to score for the Arsenal.

D side is brimming with confidence. I reckon we win 2nil. Cesc to score
My favorite competition of them all. I'm so excited it is finally back, and I believe we can win it this year. I put my annual bet for Arsenal to win the Champions and it was at much higher than usual odds, 11 to 1. Here's to me writing a Champions League final preview come May!!
Likewise GK, this is the one competition that I really, really, really want Arsenal to win. I can see us conceding a goal, but we'll outscore them. 2-1 or 2-0 if we're lucky, or 3-1 if we're really lucky.
My best wishes for tomorrow's Arsenal game ;) .
Like gunnerkid107, I love the CL games, and i'm hoping for a 1:3 win for The Arsenal, i'm also glad it's not minus degree out there.
It shouldnt be that cold this time of the year
2-0 to The Arsenal - assuming our back line doesn't freak out again - because to be fair, Hackburn missed some glorious chances.
I'm going for my original 6-0 to The Arsenal prediction.
The ref had to send off Zidane. No scandal as far as the ref is concerned me thinks; he just happened to be the one present.
Very surprised to see Eboue back in the squad after that hideous div...err foul by Warnock ... Must say I was surprised he had left ankle ligament damage when he was grabbing his right knee. Anyway, great news!
I think every average arsenal player has upped his game so far this season
I think we just have a entirelly different squad who in my opinion stands a better chance for trophies on all fronts
Looking forward to some top level European football tonight, hell even the spuddies might tune in to watch some of Europe's premier competition. God know's it'll be the only time they get to watch it. Arsenal 4 - Kiev 1 - Adebayor back to back hatricks imho.
Very unpredictable foward line we've got
I think i'm just having a glimps of what arsene(sure knows) is working up
Gaga, I wasn't saying Cantalejo did anything wrong, but it was still a scandal in my eyes. As I said, I'm confident about this game. I think we will defy our current record in the Ukrainian with some ease.
For a decade I've hoped to win this bloody tournament, it would be the biggest monkey off my back if we finally manage this year. It's gonna be hard, but it is a cup competition after all. I love it.
Does anybody else want to see RVP and maybe a couple other players rested?
TPowell - What for the first game in the CL against veterans of this competition in a toiugh group where anyone can beat anyone? You're mad mate!
LG - lol well maybe. I guess I'm just tired of watching RVP get tackled and having to worry myself until I see him running again.
On a completely different topic can I just ask how the hell did Guthrie not get any further ban. Is this some new FA policy whereby if you actually break someone's leg you get let off. Tell the ref he's wrong and they'll throw the book at you.
Oh I've just realised that we're setting a record - this is Arsenal's 100th game in the Champions League proper. It's in a way good that our record of playing in the Ukraine is bad, the players will go into this game in the right mindset. Here's to 3 good points! :)
Yay, Song to play in the middle (Denilson at LM)! :D
I never would of thought AW would put Song at DM. I believe in Song. He could be our permanent solution for DM,
Penz, we were just chatting about the discipline thing on the forums -> Open Terrace -> "red card" thread
We're having a bit less possession than usual but the chances are there so I'm confident we'll score in the 2nd half.
Did Sagna foul him??!?! I honestly couldn't see anything!
twas not a foul
They are a bunch of cheats - willam gallas is the worst footballer at arsenal football club - the bloke is shocking. its embarrassing. he is slow, can control a football and doesnt even know what position he plays. its disgusting. Adebayor missed a near open goal which would have saved all these problems. we only have ourselves to blame
I hate this lot!! That #5 fouled Theo and yelled at him, after like cheating and fouling the whole time?!?! We didn't play well enough, but they and the ref were shocking at times.
damn - id rather an own goal than that prat gallas - he is terrible
Gallas is stil an idiot
We will struggle big time if we can't get past a team as poor as Kiev. That was sad really. No drive. No real will to win.
Wyn Mills
Credit where it's due and all that - Gallas fought to get that equaliser. Come on guys!
And Wenger can make all the excuses he likes. That was a game we should have WON. No question about it. First serious question posed to this team and it couldn't answer it.
Wyn Mills
they were a nasty bunch of horrible cheats- they didnt play football - theo was hacked sensless, they dived and cheated their way to a point.
"Credit where it's due and all that - Gallas fought to get that equaliser. Come on guys!" Why wait until you're 1-0 down to start showing some fight?
Wyn Mills
BY D4NNYT -They are a bunch of cheats - willam gallas is the worst footballer at arsenal football club - the bloke is shocking. its embarrassing. he is slow, can control a football and doesnt even know what position he plays. its disgusting.
You were saying?
WynnMills, the Invincible and Superior Man United couldn't score against a poor Villareal team -- stop whining! They dominated that game and still couldn't score an away goal. We always knew this was going to be a tough game, we've had a horrible history against this team. Ugly or not, poor performance or not, getting a draw is a pretty damned good result.
You guys have a loser's mentality. Gallas is crap, admit it. Wenger's mind was set on a draw, i guess dat rubbed off on the team. We should be mauling such teams. Wats wit history. Its a lame excuse for failure
It's not that I'm not disappointed with the stray passes, lack of spark and all that. Yeah criticism is due there. But so is the credit due to the Gallas goal. It's incredibly difficult to play a terrible bunch of cheats like this lot. The result's acceptable, the performance probably not, but the circumstances were difficult, no doubt. But let's not blow things out of proportion.
Axe gallas from the squad for a couple of games. He may get a clearer view of things from the bench
smithdj74 - my nan could have scored that!
Lou! No me is blowing tins out of proportion. We are only stating the obvious
I mean no one
Axe gallas from the squad for a couple of games. He may get a clearer view of things from the bench
OOH, good idea. While we're at it, let's send Wenger home for a few weeks - that'll straighten him out and he'll surely buy the players we want then. C'mon, they're players who are trying to play their game. If you think any of them are sitting in the dressing room before the game thinking " ya know, I just don't care much about this game I think I'll play mediocre at best", then you're a fool. Players have good and bad streaks and you have to stick with them unless they become truly atrocious and you have a better option.
smithdj74 - my nan could have scored that!
possibly. But you cry to get rid of Gallas - who do you want in his place? What does the replacement bring to the table Gallas doesn't? Can you guarantee they won't have any tepid games?
and most importantly - our captain scored a goal with his c-o-c-k this season... can your nan do the same? LOL
I cant remember using abusive words on any one. If u cant respect other's opinion mr. Smith..... Well ur state of mind is definitely on the wrong side
Don't exclamation mark me Gunnerchi. You've given your opinion and I've given mine. No need to yell at all.
Sorry bout that lou
In each of the previous champions league seasons Kiev have come last in their group. And you can really see why tonight. To be honest we should have cr@pped all over them. Yes, a draw is a decent result, but it was very nearly a defeat. That last gasp bundle from Gallas was the only bit of gritty determination I saw all night from our lot. Adebayor couldn't be bothered, and both he and Van Persie looks more and more like prima donnas every time I see them.
Wyn Mills
It looked like Arsenal were playing very cautiously amidst all the dirty Kiev hacks and dangerous high challenges. Seeing the replay after the hack on Walcott when he got in the Kiev players' face, the studs were up at Walcott's knees! - a clear attempt to injure, and not the only bad challenge by Kiev in the game - it was almost like they were told to make hits on Arsenal players. I've also watched that supposed "penalty" about 30 times - the Kiev player so obviously grabs Sagna's arm and drags him on top of him while he dove to the floor. 1-1 is satisfactory if we get out of the Ukraine without any injuries from those dirty neanderthal tw*ts.
I cant remember using abusive words on any one. If u cant respect other's opinion mr. Smith..... Well ur state of mind is definitely on the wrong side
?? What are you talking about? I didn't use abusive words about you or anyone else. I simply pointed out that Gallas deserves to have a night where he isn't rock steady without people calling for his head.
We are cool smith. No hard feelings
On that note I will admit to feeling a bit like Wyn Mils. RVP has undeniable talent and shows flashes of brilliance but as time goes by I doubt more and more whether he'll ever be a real force for us. Either he gets in the mix and goes down holding injured parts several times in the game or he plays a calm measured game without showing much, but stays uninjured for 90 minutes. Eh, I hope I'm wrong but I find myself more interested in what Eduardo, Vela, and those cats will do when RVP is inevitably unavailable for us.
Ok...this is my view...a few are having a go about Gallas and it not being good enough....I would agree it was not really good enough but the first thing that came into my head was our finishing was not was is required. Adebayor SHOULD have put his chance in front of goal away...Cesc really should have should scored and RVP had a few chances aswell. We had chances to take control of this game, silence the crowd and we didn't...that was not Gallas's fault !!
oh no, Armageddon has arrived again. I was better off not reading some of the previous posts. Makes this freezing weather here in Deutschland feel like a holiday in Spain. The only thing missing are a few anti-Adebayor and *****-Eboue comments. not the start we all expected, but a draw will do. We'll pi$$ all over them at the Emirates. anyway, roll on the Bolton Cloggers.
radar has caught them all. RvP, Cesc and Ade had chances that should have been converted. btw, last time I checked, Gallas was leading a defence which has leaked a massive two goals so far (one a penalty that never was).
and please excuse my crap grammer....I am very tired lol
Wow SUX2BU you watched the penalty incident 30 times? Where can I watch it again? The close-up I saw was inconclusive as it showed their backs. The boss has said post-match that "We feel it's very very harsh, because the guy pulled Sagna with both hands and fell." That guy's a con artist!!!
I'm just a bit disappointed too, but I agree with you guys - I mean Radarman, G4L and Smith - I felt the players were cautious not to give away fouls and not to be fouled, we did create some chances and we should have capitalised on them. The defence looked a little bit all over the place at times, but it's the lack of good passing, fluency and conversion that's disappointing. Gallas is speaking on TV as I type, he's very pi$$ed looking almost as if we lost, so I personally refuse to believe that he didn't give a $h!t.
I didn't think the game was that bad to be honest, we were away from home in the Champions league. A penalty that shouldn't have been made us concede, we created a lot of chances and were unlucky not to score from some of them. We came out with a draw not as good as 3 points but reasonable.
"Penalty" incident - the guy grabbed Sagna at least with his left arm:
it was never a penalty.
Denilson and Song...All I can say is if Wenger thinks these two are good enough to conquer europe he's sadly deluded. But then again we know he wanted to get someone else in. The problem is its all too late. When Cesc gets the hump next summer because he's getting sod all support and buggers off to Madrid or Barca I wonder if Wenger will still spout the same rubbish about being satisfied with the squad. That's not the impression I got watching him in anguish on the bench tonight.
Wyn Mills
What did Song and Denlison do wrong today? You know if Flamini played like Song did I don't think you would be complaining. I seriously believe some people are unhappy because the player doesn't have the right name.
Lou, Setanta showed some nice rather closeup replays of the "penalty". I recorded the match on my PVR so I was able to pause and slo-mo the incident to get a better look. When it happened in real time I couldn't distinguish what actually happened - looked like Sagna jumped on his back, and he's just not that stuid to do something like that. Sure enough after examining the replays it became obvious that Sagna was grabbed and pulled over top of the Kiev player. Totally dirty, but the ref fell for it.
Am I the only one who loves Gallas?
Song was also ace!
not Tom, you're not.
So there's a bit of scapegoating? Wel;l lets be honest. van the man was turn on the left wing (as I have always said he is), Fabregas was pants, Denilson should tell Wenger to give the place next to Cesc to Song, Toure is also pants, Clichy and Sagna need to work on their attacking final balls.
I can't believe all the negativity after what was a decent result. We could have done better but no team plays at it's best every game. Gallas played well and showed good attitude, shouldn't be getting all this criticism. Some of these posters sound like Spurs fans tyring to lower our morale.
Tom14 - what does 'turn' mean? And why not coat off Cesc a little bit more? or how about what is widely recognised as the best 2 fullbacks in the league...? Gallas deserves credit for his goal (ade should've converted) but i still think his 'captaining' skills need working on.
Christ. Wasn't that bad! Our record sucks in Eastern Europe too. We will destroy them at home.
Its called "The last thing you are doing before you rush to college-itis"
That Vukojevic is a despicable little **** isn't he? And Tom what did Toure do wrong? You have the biggest anti-Toure agenda its not funny. He was the only one of the defenders that didn't get caught out once.
Ozi Gooner
The problem is that I don't have an agenda (other than trying to tell people how good Song is because I believe in him) neither defenders were brilliant and Toure was better on Wednesday, but over the last year and a half, Toure has been a shadow of his formser self.
