I hate the phrase 'a must win game` because it has been so eagerly overused in this modern era of football, almost to the point where its words have lost their true meaning, but it has to be said that for this Arsenal team to lift the Barclays Premier League trophy come May, this game, away to Stamford Bridge, is a must win game.
Arsenal got a much needed midweek win in Europe thanks to the pink boots of Nicklas Bendtner, though an exponentially improved performance will be required to take down Chelsea at home. I wanted Arsenal to be the team to break Chelsea`s hugely impressive home record, but Xabi Alonso and Liverpool already have claimed that honour early in the season. So let`s aim to continue the frustration that Chelsea has experienced against the big four at home this season, and claw ourselves back into the title race at the expense of the Blues.

Chelsea Team News:
Chelsea will need to again use their massive, talented squad because they will be without many great players due to injury. Michael Essien (knee),Juliano Belletti (ankle), Franco di Santo, and Ricardo Carvalho (knee) have all been ruled out. Joe Cole injured his ankle in Europe midweek and is a major doubt for match. Big, Brazilian centre back Alex will be available for his manager. Didier Drgoba, who has constantly been a vexatious pain in Arsenal's side, is banned due to the infamous coin throwing incident against Burnley.
Player to watch: Nicholas Anelka
The former Arsenal player has hit his stride as of late for the Blues, and with the silky skills and deadly finishing that he still possess, he will be a threat to Arsenal's rickety defense.
Arsenal Team News:
Arsenal come into the game receiving three major boosts. Striker Emmanuel Adebayor will reclaim his throne as Arsenal's leading front man, while Vela and Bendtner will have to settle for a place on the bench. Bacary Sagna will return to the right back position, while Samir Nasri will look to repeat his goalscoring exploits from United against another colossal club.
Abou Diaby (abdominal strain), Theo Walcott (shoulder), Kolo Toure (calf), and Emmanuel Eboue (knee) will not play a part in Super Sunday.
Player to watch: Emmanuel Adebayor
Emmanuel shows up for big games, and after being on the treatment table while Arsenal suffered many a disappointments, he will be roaring and ready to go for this one. I still believe that he and van Persie form a great partnership as he occupies defenders while Robin can work in the space in front of them. I see his attitude and work ethic in his return boosting Arsenal's uncharacteristically low morale.

I'm really surprised how well Chelsea have fared without Essien so far this season, a testament to Scolari i guess. My eyes no longer bleed watching them which is a good thing too. I fully expect a beating though, the scoreline may not show it, but i think we'll be outclassed in every aspect today. That said it wouldn't take much to please me atm, even a decent leaugue performance will suffice or some players who actually look like the give half a care.

As far as match predictions go this is another one which is impossible to predict. I wouldn't be shocked if we won 2-0 and looked comfortable. Or if we lost 3-0 and looked horrendous. Who knows....

They might out-scrap us but won't outclass us... Our boys are going to be up for the fight today. Like you said they are missing the likes of Essien as well as Drogba who scored their winner last year. I'm going to stick with 1-1 just to avoid disappointment!

If we have a near full fit side then we can do them. A lot of people seemed to miss the fact we had more than half our team out against City. They didnt beat anywhere near our best team. Eduardo & Adebayor missing from attack, Rossicky, Eboue, Fabregas, Walcott missing from the midfield. Toure, Gallas & Sagna out of the defense. Infact out of the 11 who beat them 3-1 last year only Diaby & Clichy played. If Adebayor, Nasri & Sagna are back we have a good chance of competing

Yeah Paul, it depends how match-fit Ade, Sagna and Nasri are. Such a shame we won't see Cashley Eboue'd! We need the RM (be it Den or Ramsey or Samir) and Sagna to be careful with the ****. In a game that has no real width in either midfield, the 4 full-backs will have important roles to play.

chelseas goal threat are usually from Drogba Ballack Lampard and J Cole. Drogba and Ballack are out. Lampard can be restricted from long range drives, and if J Cole isn't allowed to follow up on rebounds, then we should be fine

Why did Almunia throw it out so quickly for? I don't get that. Just needed to take it slow and wait for the box to clear. We were 0-0 half hour gone, and not playing too badly tbh. If we were losing with 10mins to go I could understand. Also Djourous OG I felt was easily save able if Almunia had actually dived for the ball instead of standing there like a lemon. I was always taught to dive for every ball as you might have a chance to get to it! I don't blame JD one bit. Its a fluke, just one of those things, 9/10 times you clear it. Hope he doesn't lose confidence. Adebayor I think needs a rolicking though!

I'm very happy for RVP, he has been getting a lot of unfair criticism from a few fans here. He is world class, lets hope we can put together a good run and secure a champions leasgue spot. I'm not deluded enough to think we can win the title. Our midfield was overrun at times when Chelsea got their slick passing together and Nasri needed to help out Clichy a bit more against Bosingwa. Still plenty of reason for optimism.

How poor were Chelsea? Then JT the leader of men reverted to type with an outrageous two footed challenge on Sagna. Djourou showed real charecter after his own goal and him and Gallas completed dominated the Chelsea forwards. Denilson didnt have a great game but he worked hard and RVP showed why nobody should give up on him as an Arsenal player. Great charecter showed today.

Wonderful weekend indeed Matthew - Big Tone's Pompey won too (while Keane's Sunderland got a trashing, but I don't care/hate him, though some Gooners may). And credit to Chelsea also for a pulsating game, a proper derby! It couldn't have happened with Jose on their bench really. Their more attacking style suited us just fine. Cech's comments too, Joe Cole's too. And it's refreshing to see Anelka not score against us! :D

I thought Clichy was my MotM Jubair. :) Like you guys said, he often had to deal with Bosingwa alone and he did that well. Made a couple of his trademark threatening runs too. Just like Djourou, Clichy also came back well after making some errors and credit to him too. In fact aside from a couple of risky offside trap, I thought our defence worked very hard and were resilient today. Did it cross your midn that we couldn't hold on to the lead? The whole team did us proud, and the travelling Gooners too.

Johhny Come Lately, if thats the case then yu could have built an entire city in the gap when kalou got the offside decision last season vs Newcastle. that was ten times mroe worse than this & by far the worse offside decision ever. we deserved a bit of luck alright, Drogba was OFFSIDE too last season when yu won, plus the Cashley foul on Hleb in the build up to Essien's goal, we deserved a bit of luck & it all levelled out. besides we were more hungry than your team. Almunia didnt make a single save the entire game besides a lampard header, we won & we deserved it, period..

I would agree with you Lou, Clichy was brilliant, I'd go as far as to say the whole defence played exceptionally well. Our midfield worked hard and I'd stick with playing Song alongside Cesc in the centre ahead of Denilson. We need someone more defence minded there, especially in the away games. We just need a few players back from injury to add a bit more depth to our squad and increase competition for places.

Chelsea responded to the pool defeat by winning their next 5 league games. we need a similar run, perhaps even better, cuz tat 7 points gap with Chelsea could well be 11 or more after the next five games, which is why this game will mean nothing if we can't be consistent vs the other teams. lets hope this is the defining moment of our season where boys become men..

The funny thing about this win is that it doesn't tell us anything new. We knew we could play well against big teams - some Gooners would jump out and say 'let's wait for the next game against lesser teams and see if we're still this hungry', fair enough. We knew RvP could score goals. We knew Clichy and Sagna were brilliant. We knew Almunia could make mistakes (as well as atone them). We knew Denilson was no winger/RM. We knew Nasri's good but still had to gain consistency. Basically it's a reward for hard work/grit as much as a few moments of brilliance and luck really.

One thing we did learn Lou is that we CAN be first to the ball when we show the desire. At no stage once we took the lead did I feel we wouldn't take 3 points. The desire was awesome tonight. Very pleased with the lads.

Luckys dont forget 3 seasons ago when Drogba was offside and then his touch was so poor he controlled the ball into the net by pure fluke. We deserved that win no doubt, If Almunia had had a stormer id say we were lucky but he did sweet FA and could have gone to look for some of the coins that Drogba threw.

Great game, a real end to end nailbiter. In the end we had a bit of an edge with the chavs travelling to France midweek and with an extra day off too. Nice to play a team with more missing from their squad than us for a change though! Essien, Cole and Drogba would've made a big difference for them. Still take nuthin away from the boys I expected us to fold when Djourou and Almunia t*ttenhammed 5hit up, too much to ask to see the same fight and desire against Wigan next week? probably lol.

Very proud of the boys tonight and RVP fully deserved his MOTM champagne, in fact the whole team did for the effort they put in today, especially after going 1-0 down. Terry should have been sent off for his tackle on Sagna. It was two footed and I think the only reason he wasn't given a red card was because he is the England captain. The Sky commentators didn't really criticise it has usual. Ivanovic could easily have walked too. But fantastic win in the end. I have a big smile on my face and I will be able to watch MOTD for the first time in 3 weeks!!!

Probably, I'm not stupid enough to predict us winning anything until we gain some consistency, but in reality we're still (until tomorrow anyhow) only 7 points off the top and the way this season has been going anything is more than possible. You seem pretty hacked off, lose money today? Or had you been gobbing off to gooner mates/colleagues earlier in the week?. I know it must be galling to spunk all those millions and still not be guaranteed to beat a team built on a fraction of the cost, but chin up and keep that free plastic flag waving high ;)

Glad Van Persie scored too, admittedly he's been terrible so far this season but thoughts of selling him are ridiculous, we need players like him here, even just as back up for when Eduardo is finally fit again. In fairness guys (frosty,orange and dorset) all 3 of you are here with the same beef against the same guy on the same day at the same time, seems kinda fitting you should know about multiple logins dorset. If there is a cancer at our club it's crap like this. I read plenty of things by gooners I don't agree with, would never dream of starting some kind of lame vendetta though. Obviously I'm naive cos I expect to see some form of unity between gooners in less smoother times. Ok, I missed most of the personal attacks and the general point of the last 50% of that thread. One thing is for sure, a personal attack is the sign of someone not clever enough to come up with a coherent answer or argument and shows them to be nothing more than a childish idiot with nothing worthwhile to contribute towards positive discussion and as such should take a long walk off a short pier and do us all favour! On a different note, a great day out yesterday and a great result. Thoroughly deserved!
