AS Roma vs. Arsenal

Stadio Olymipico

AS Roma v. Arsenal

On Wednesday night Arsenal turn their attentions from qualifying for Europe to the actual competition itself. The fiery cauldron of the Stadio Olympico awaits the Gunners for the second leg of this round of 16 match up between Arsenal and AS Roma.

Arsene Wenger's squad holds a 1-0 advantage going into Italy, though it should have definitely been much more than that. Arsenal dominated Roma in every facet of the game. The pace, power, and technical superiority of Arsenal was too much for the out of shape Roma to handle. That being said, we did not finish the tie off. Our impotence in front of goal was laughable. Not even the goal scorer, van Persie, can claim innocence. I don't expect that to come back to bite us in the arse though.

Vital Quotes:

Wenger had this to say pre-match. "We need to go to Roma and play our own game.

"It`s very important for us to focus on scoring and going forward.'

"They are a very good team offensively so if we allow them to spend 90 per cent of the time doing what they like to do, we will expose ourselves.'

"Let`s go there and focus on dictating the game. I think it`s part of the personality of the team — so let`s show exactly that.'

"We are not far from the latter stages of the competition and that is where the winning attitude becomes tested.'

"The pressure becomes bigger and bigger the more you progress.'

"It is down to how we can respond to that pressure — and of course I have the confidence in the team to do very well."

English winger, Theo Walcott, is ready to make his mark on the first team again. Walcott said: "The injury feels fine but I still haven`t experienced a real whack yet. As weird as it might sound, it would definitely be really good for me if the Roma players give me a clattering.

"In Arsenal training, you obviously don`t want to injure your own team-mates, so you tend to be a bit softer in the tackle. I`ve tried to encourage people to test it out in training but it`s not the same as in match situations.'

"Our new doctor, Gary O`Driscoll, comes from a rugby background. He has regularly dealt with dislocated shoulders and says players tend to come back without suffering any reaction.'

"It should be a good battle against Riise. He was one of the players telling me to stop running when I set up the goal for Emmanuel Adebayor at Anfield last year.'

"But we still ended up losing that tie so, hopefully, I can do better against him this time."

Philippe Mexes, who loooked like a fish out of water in the first leg, said this leading up to the second tie. 'In the first leg we didn't play well,' he admitted. 'I don't think we can do much worse, so this is a positive thing, we can only improve. In the end it went well because it could have been worse than 1-0.'

'I think it will be important not to rush things and avoid exposing ourselves to their counterattacks. If we play the way we know how, we will certainly score. If we are concentrated and well-organised, we have a chance of going through.'

He said of Arsenal: 'They are very calm, they're young and they give everything during each match. They have everything to lose but they will go for it until the end because they are very young and dangerous.'

'Of the English teams, Arsenal are one of those who play the best football. But Roma are also strong and we must be aware we are stronger than them and that at our best we have every chance of going through.'

AS Roma Team News:

Again, Roma have many injuries to worry about. They will be without right back Cicinho for the rest of the season because he needs to undergo knee surgery. Marco Motta, who was impressive in the first game, will once again step in at right back. He almost scored a stunner in the first half; if it wasn't for a world class save for Almunia, then we would of gone 1-0 down. Panucci and English born Perotta will also miss the match. Danielle de Rossi is suspended for the match after receiving a yellow card for a horror tackle on Samir Nasri. Centreback Juan and striker Mirko Vučinić will return to the Italian side after missing the game in London. While Roma captain, Totti, will train with the team tomorrow despite the pain.

Player to watch: Mirko Vučinić

Similar to Eduardo, Vucinic always seems to be in a position to score. Personally I rate him more than the highly fashionable Totti. Mirko is intelligent and his movement off the ball will be a danger for Gallas and Djourou.

Arsenal Team News:

As the weeks go on, the injury reports get more and more uplifting. Eduardo and Walcott returned to the side against Burnley, leaving only Cesc, Adebayor, and Rosicky left on the treatment table. Kolo Toure has been declared fit and will regain his spot in the first eleven.

For the first time in a long while, Arsene has a difficult choice on who to start in the attack for this game. van Persie will surely start because of his form this season merits a spot in every team sheet, even though he has dried up as of late. Will Wenger start with the Dutchman up top by himself, or will he put Bendtner or Eduardo along side of him? I have no idea. We will have to see come 7 o'clock on Wednesday.

Possible Lineup: Almunia, Sagna, Gallas, Toure, Clichy, Eboue, Song, Denilson, Diaby, Nasri, van Persie

Player to watch: Denílson Pereira Neves

He was the player to watch in the first leg, and for the same reasons the quiet Brazilian will be the central figure in this one. He dominated de Rossi and the rest of the Roma midfield, but he did not receive the same praise as Flamoney did against Milan. He will need to marshal the Arsenal defense once again tomorrow night. I have been a proponent of buying a central midfielder in the past, but Denilson is very close to convincing me that he is the real deal.

Match Facts & Stats

Arsenal is on a 17 match unbeaten run in all competition.

van Persie is one yellow card away from being suspended for the next round if we make it.

Roma have lost out to an English club in the knockout rounds for the past three seasons.

Roma have let in at least one goal in their last 14 matches against English opposition.

Roma captain, Franceso Totti, has never scored against an English team.

In the last four visits to Italy, Arsenal have flown back with three wins and a draw.

Ref Watch:

Spaniard, Manuel Mejuto González, will be the head official for this match. Arsenal fans might remember him as the ref who wrongly disallowed a late equalizer by Thierry Henry against CSKA Moscow for a non-existent handball. He was also in charge of the 2005 Champions League Final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

Match Prediction:

This game could of been meaningless, but it wouldn't be Arsenal if we didn't have to do it the hard way. I think we will get one goal, and I can't see Roma scoring three. So I will go with a 1-1 scoreline, with Arsenal putting their name into the hat for the next round.

Next Fixtures:

14/3 (Sat) - Blackburn (H) - Premier League

17/3 (Tue) - Hull City (H) - FA Cup

21/3 (Sat) - Newcastle (A) - Premier League

It's hard to find a more depleted squad than ours. I can see us winning this one, 2-0! :)

I expect to see a 4-3-3 formation again, the same as in the first leg, with Walcott replacing Eboue on the wing. I say this only because Eboue has been playing a lot of minutes the last couple of games including the full 90 on sunday.

Love Wengers tactics, if they try and dominate us we will expose ourselves, can just see him on the sidelines waving his swivelled plonker at the Roma coach.

They dont think Totti or Pizzaro will play by the sounds of things. If we cant beat Roma without Totti, Perrota, Pizzaro, De Rossi, Pannuci and Cicinho we dont deserve to go through.

I do hope the Roma players will read and believe their own press clippings as therein lies their downfall tomorrow night. It is not by accident or fluke that we have remained unbeaten in Italy, their league is slow and ponderous and this is why you can have old men continuing to look like world beaters and this is also why they continually come unstuck when they play the like of Arsenal with our fast paced attack bursting with youthful vigour. Bring it on, I've zero doubt we'll progress and shut the mouths of cretins like those on Sky who are busy predicting that Arsenal is the weakest link. I'm baking some humble pie, want some Thommo?

Who is this TeddyLyon idiot and what the hell is he talking about??? // I'll be interested in seeing how Juan plays and how much trouble (if any) he gives our forwards. He's a great defender for our national team (Brazil), one of the few Brazilian players who acquitted himself well at the 2006 wc. Very much looking forward to this match! Hope Eduardo starts. However, I can't stand this English smugness about the superiority of the PL and I hope that at least 1 of Juve, Inter or Madrid take out an English team.

I agree LG. Plus that is in 11 matches total. As I said in the article, I like Vucinic better than Totti. He wasn't fit for the first game and only played 8 minutes. He should be fully fit for tomorrow. If Roma beats us, it will be because of Vucinic not Totti.

Wenger says that Kolo will be fit and in the squad for tomorrow. Am I the only one who thinks he's better suited for this kind of match? I've learnt to trust Djourou in the Premiership mainly because he does'nt appear allergic to heading the ball, but I think Kolo with his experience, pace and newly regained fitness will be better suited for this game.

I agree deledudu. Roma aren't a long ball team, so Kolo's pace and experience will probably benefit us more than having Djourou in there.

Its a good problem to have, but analyzed without emotions, its a no brainer. A Kolo/Willie pairing at CB should provoke more confidence, but the early season clangers from both, for which Kolo was the primary culprit raises the understandable doubts in most minds. I hate to sound like a spuddie, but I suspect next season could be the one we've been waiting for in the Premier League if we can retain all our current players and sell only our "world class" striker to balance Wenger's book.

Can't believe he just conceded when I hit 'submit' on the previous post! Didn't Torres push the Real defender (Canavaro or who?) when he took the ball down?!?! Sigh. Pood Casillas is single-handedly keeping them in the game. ***** as I type this, Heinze has conceded a penalty. Unbelievable.

I think the record stays there. Mascherano was on 1 yellow before tonight, he picked up another 1, he'll be out of the 1st leg of their last 8 game. That'll be a concern for them though they were cruising the whole night against Real.

Lou, I'll take any team but Villarreal. Bayern Munich will at least come forward and play, and that is bound to leave space for us to exploit, Villarreal are way too compact and love to play on the break. Like you said, lets not tempt fate, but if I'm given a choice, I'll rather have a team thats supposedly superior to ours than those we'll be expected to beat like Panathinaikos or Villarreal.

Don't care. I've seen plenty of other teams' ***** poor performances and lucky breaks get rewarded by a trophy at the end of the season , so I guess we're entitled to a tight squeeze. And anyway we should have had them dead and buried in the first leg, so we deserved to get through anyway. With Cesc and Tomas back, we'll look very different in the quarter finals...

On a less positive note an Arsenal fan got stabbed in Rome pre game. After the 7 Manchester United fans got stabbed there and all the trouble Chelsea and United fans got from the police I would love to here Platini tell us how Rome got the final? F*@king idiot is so busy worrying about the English domination but less worried about possible loss of human life.

lol Iceman that's indeed a scary possibility, 4 times against Chelsea... I might well throw up now..! Luckys how about adding Porto to the payback list lol: Porto next, Liverpool again in the semis, Barca again in the final, all with opposite results than our last encounters. That'd be the perfect payback journey!

Well Luckys, this report only said the police arrested the crazy guy who stabbed the poor Gooner. And apparently some ultras also 'stormed' a coach full of GOoners and broke some windows there. I thought the UEFA said they'd throw teams out of Europe if violence ***** happened?!??! I don't mean to punish Roma per se but nobody should get hurt, come on it's just football, I don't get it! Reports say the fan got stabbed in the leg after the coaches were ambushed by ultras but the fan is ok. Disgrace that 2 sets of overseas fans will have to go there for the final now, if it was happening over here we would be banned from Europe again. ah well, Blackburn saturday, which will be tough but at least they played tonight aswell to even out the fatigue factor a bit plus we have Arshavin (how much better does he look now after watching some of that dross!!!?).

the uefa should take the final away from Rome and award it to us. after all we're the ones who knocked them out. would be amazing to have the finals played at The Emirates..

I watched the game from my sick bed last night, too ill even to have a beer if you believe that!! I was sure that if the illness didnt kill me then the penalty shootout would. Fair play to the lads for keeping their nerve. I celebrated with a nice nap. As a side note did any hear Jeff Stelling saying that when Harry Redknapp asked for volunteers for the CC final shoot out not one person raised their hand?? What bottle ... lol

Hi LA Villan. I don't want to avoid anyone because with Fabregas, Rosicky and (God help us) Adebayor back in time and with Theo and Eduardo getting sharpness back, we'll take on anyone IMO. Personally, I'd like Barca because a few scores need to be settled there I reckon. To hit back at Barca for the wrong result in Paris; to show Henry what he's missing and for Fabregas to make a few personal points too. Yes, it's all very well this salivating over Barca at the moment but it is clear that the Spanish League is weak and I'll reserve my judgement until I see them up against an English team, thank-you-very-much!

"an amazing European performance" -- that was NO "amazing European performance" last night, luckys. We lost 1-0 against a mediocre Roma team shorn of several first choice players who were injured. We were the better team in the first leg and on that basis alone edged them in "deserving" to go thru. But if based solely on the 2nd leg, neither team deserved to go thru. Yes, I was relieved that we went thru but we had the easiest draw out of all the English teams and couldn't score against (and conceded a ridiculous goal) a really mediocre team. Chelsea, Pool (hell, even Villa) would've put this poor Roma team to the sword in the first 20 mins. Given that this team has shown no consistent improvement all season long, I have serious doubts about our ability to handle Bayern, Villareal and Porto -- never mind Barca, Man Utd, Pool and Chelsea. If we look a different team in the next round, great, I'll take all this back happily. The other thing is AW's team selection (and incredibly late substitutions) made this game go into penalties, which means the players will be exhausted 3 days before a crucial league game that we have to win. Sincere apologies for being so negative, I don't like raining on others' parade, but I just can't take much solace from last night's game after thinking that maybe we'd finally turned a corner.

Far too negative Jaelle. United and Pool had the luxury of playing at home and if we'd had that Real side, I'v no doubt we'd have eaten them up 7-0. Plus that was an abolute bear-pit last night which always make a tie an awful lot trickier than it should be and NO we did NOT have the easiest tie at all. I think we were complacent going into last night's game; THAT will not happen again and I am quite certain that the experience will lead to a much better quarter final result, when we will have our playmaker back. We are a fair bit depleted ourselves and I'm grateful we've made it past this roun to give other key players a chance to get back. I'm fed up of hearing this rubbish about Liverpool this and Liverpool that. Real Madrid were ATROCIOUS and yet again Liverpool get handed a virtual bye. But nevermind, they'll get a big reality check on Saturday at OT. In the past we'd have lost that tie last night but we stuck in and held our nerve in a shoot-out in a highly hostile atmosphere and hat's not too shabby. At the end of the day Arsenal's name is in the hat for next Friday and THAT is what it's all about. How many times in the past have we played valiantly and brilliantly yet lost out. It's about time we got a result from sheer luck and resolve and it only convinces me more that maybe we're going to get something shiny out of this season.

julie, I do credit our players for coolly slotting in those penalties in a very hostile atmosphere. Not an easy thing to do at all. I also think it's about time that we're on the end of some incredible luck, I'm sick and tired of seeing Pool dominate the luck stakes in this competition. That said, I don't think we would've buried Real at all, not this team. We might've won, but in much less convincing fashion than Pool did. I don't want to draw the red scousers for the next round because they have a monopoly on luck in the CL and we're just not good enuf to overcome that. Nor do I want Man Utd because the team that beats the reigning champions almost never go on to win the competition. Which is why I didn't think we'd win last year. If we must draw an English team, I'll take Chelsea.

Julie & Jaelle - you are both right in your own way. The performance last night wasn't good at all - some of that you have to give credit to Roma for because they basically sat back after equalising and tried to play us on the counter-attack. Not easy to break down tough Italian defences. Also, the formation/players last night didn't work. Van Persie was too isolated and consequently didn't have a great game. This is a team that hasn't gelled in the Arsenal way, hasn't got used to playing with each other. A lot of our play and chances seem to be 'created' from hopeful balls. Also, our wide players either aren't good enough or not the right players. Having Cesc and Walcott/Rosicky back will make a massive difference to our side, a massive difference.

The boss said he'd made up his mind regarding the orders of penalty takers. Theo also said the boss just told him he'd be the 3rd one (he'd never taken a pen in competitive top flight before). Maybe it's not a case of Gallas 'not stepping up'. Well he wasn't at his best yesterday, and the boss would've picked the attacking players first anyway, which he did. Kolo's the first defender to step up in the sudden death part.
GoonerLou
I meant to say: the boss had made up his mind about the pen takers in the 2nd half of the AET, reportedly.

I felt sorry for Julio, esp. with the home crowd getting on his back (we're not the only ones with a terrible home crowd). He's a poor player but a good guy. The English have never understood why the Sevilla fans called Julio the "Beast." It had nothing to do with his physical build. It was a reference to his "hunger for goals."

There's a reason why I was very worried more than most here when the game went to penalty kicks. It has to do with Roma's Brazilian keeper, Doni. Notice how he kept getting off his line to save the pens? He does that often, very blatantly, and usually gets away with it, even tho it's against FIFA rules. It's often helped him save pens. It's the reason that Brazil got to the Copa America final in 2007. In our semifinal against Uruguay, the game went to pens. Uruguay were by far the better side in that game but they couldn't get a winning goal. Doni was our keeper in that tournament. In the penalty shootout, he blatantly jumped quite far from his line to save a penalty, and it was that save that got us to the final. It was a very bad example of a keeper violating basic FIFA rules. The ref just let him get away with it. It was very controversial. Many commentators, not to mention the Uruguayans, were furious. So I had that in my mind while watching the shootout, desperate that it wouldn't happen again.

I don't believe that Wenger had already made up his mind on the pk takers. Arsene was rushing to get Vela on at the last minute, but he ran out of time. Surely that would of been to take a penalty, and not to play 10 seconds.

gk107, AW said he'd already made up his mind who would take the penalties by the end of the first half of extra time. He also said he tried to get Vela on to take the pens but wasn't able to.

'' I had my mind made up in the second period of extra time who would take the penalties, and Diaby was one of the players to step up on the pitch '' - Diaby stepped up on the pitch so im guessing volunteers were taken, Gallas is the most experienced and is a former striker and has been on fire the last few months, i expect more of him, it takes class and composure at times so id have wanted gallas stepping up

Off topic, but did anyone see Lassana Diarra playing for Real Madrid against Liverpool? He was the shining light in a terrible Real side, looked a class above everyone else on his team. Can't believe we had both him and Flamini and ended up with neither.

Really? I wasn't paying full attention to that game after Torres scored his 1st goal (controversial) which had already killed the tie. But I thought Diarra was more like a headless chicken in a totally lost side who got stunned right from the start.

off topic: people talk about the great attacking front 5 of Barca Iniesta Xavi Messi Etoo Henry. What's happened to our very own Alex hleb? Does he even get a game?

Jaelle, I know he said that, but if he was trying to bring on Vela how could he of made up his mind that early? He was obviously trying to rush Vela on at the last second to take somebodies spot.

Gael, re Hleb at Barca -- he's made several appearances as a sub, and started only a handful of games. I thought he might get more appearances after having such a good pre-season. I think Guardiola's got some issues with Hleb -- both on-pitch and off-pitch. I think when Hleb has played he's done a decent job but he's not at his best because he needs more games. Wouldn't surprise me if Hleb leaves Barca in the summer.

I think Vela on for 10 seconds would have been more productive than Bendtner for 90 minutes !!

This was a great result not just for Arsenal but for British football.
