Spurs vs. Arsenal

White Hart Lane

On Sky

Tottenham v. Arsenal

Robin. RvP. van Persie. ROBIN VAN PERSIE!

I swear if you didn't know better and only listened to the news, you'd think Arsenal was traveling the six kilometers up the road with only one player on the team coach. van Persie has been out since November, so there will be at least 11 more important Arsenal players than him.

Anyways, moving onto the match itself, there really isn't much to say. I suppose that is why all the talk have been about RvP. It'll be a typical full-blooded encounter, especially with Sol returning to the Lane for the first time in red & white since October 2005. Obviously whoever bounces back from their respective cup heartache will prevail. Hopefully the extra days off will work in Arsenal's favour.

Vital Quotes:

Why is it before every NLD, whoever happens to be managing Tottenham always feels the need to compare the lilywhites to Arsenal? The jealousy isn't helping that twitching problem.

Mr. Harry Redknapp had this to say: 'When everyone is fit we have a squad that can match Arsenal.' said

'At the start of the year, who would have seen us fourth, compared to the likes of Liverpool and Man City with their resources? It shows the massive strides we've made.'

'It's been massive progress this year. We're much closer to Arsenal now and we'll be even closer next year. We've got players who are improving and can only get better.'

You have to applaud the man on his flawless logic. Only Spurs have injuries and can improve from season to season.

Spurs Team News:

Tottenham captain Ledley 'Cesc just nutmegged me' King could make a return to the Spurs lineup for the first time in seven-week. Wilson Palacios starts a two match ban for yellow card accumulation, while Lennon, Jenas, and Kranjcar have been ruled out through injury as well. Cudicini, Rose and Woodgate are long term absentees.

Possible Starting XI: Gomes, Walker, King, Dawson, Bale, Bentley, Huddlestone, Kaboul, Modric, Defoe, Crouch

Player to watch: Jermain Defoe

Defoe has something Spurs were desperately missing at the Grove in October, pace. If Harry goes ahead and pairs Crouch with Defoe again, we will need Campbell to be tight on the giant and Vermaelen to stay on Defoe.

Arsenal Team News:

If you haven't heard yet, Robin van Persie will return to the bench for this match. Shocking, I know! The Dot com has been playing up his return with a picture special. The news has been awfully slow since the defeat in Catalonia.

In other injury news, Song will miss this match and the one against Wigan on Sunday. Hopefully he can return in time for the visit of Man Citeh. Arshavin will also be unavailable for another couple of weeks. Gallas, Fabregas, Djourou, Gibbs, and Ramsey are long term absentees.

Predicted Starting XI: Almunia, Sagna, Campbell, Vermaelen, Clichy, Denilson, Diaby, Nasri, Walcott, Eboue, Bendtner

Player to watch: Denilson & Eboue

With Lennon and Kranjcar out, Tottenham will rely on Luka Modric for creative impulses. If Denilson plays physical with the miniature Croatian, then I feel we won't have too much trouble in this match.

Emmanuel Eboue will also play a big role. At halftime of this match last season, I yelled at my television 'I hope Eboue never plays for Arsenal again'. It was a heat of the moment thing, but I meant it at the time. Not only was his stupid sending off frustrating, but he had been our best player so far, so that made his moronic decision that much harder to take. A year and some change later, through hard work and determination, Eboue has earned a place in the heart of every Gooner. At random times in my day, I find myself humming 'Emmanuel Ebouueeee, Emmanuel Ebouueee!'. His energy on the left wing will be crucial, especially if Tottenham fade late on.

Match Facts & Stats

The Gunners are unbeaten in their last eight league matches, earning 22 points out of a possible 24. (Birmingham, arghh!)

Arsenal have scored a stoppage-time winner in three of their last six league matches.

Tottenham have only conceded 10 league goals at home this season, fewer than any other club in the division.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 20 Premier League meetings with Tottenham. It is the Gunners' joint longest top-flight unbeaten run against another team - they also went 20 matches without defeat against Huddersfield Town from April 1928 to September 1937.

Ref Watch:

Mark Clattenburg will be the head official in N17 tonight.

Match Prediction:

Every year that Tottenham doesn't beat us makes the next year's NLDs 10 times as nerve-racking for myself. They will break the streak eventually. I don't think it will be tomorrow, but anything can happen in these games. A draw is no good for us, just like in 1971. We need a win, and three points will also begin the St. Totteringham's day festivities. I hope we'll be celebrating come 10 o'clock tomorrow.

3-1 to the Arsenal. Bendtner, Diaby, and Sol Campbell with the Gunner goals. I wonder what odds I could get on that?!

Option numero tres! Arsenal equalizes in the last minute with a controversial penalty (scored by campbell of course). Players start fighting, someone punches harry redknapp( ha ha!). Arsene Wenger gives a post-match interview saying " I zidn't zee anyziin". : )

3-2 Spurs, Defoe at last scores in a big game, Pav make it 2-0 at half time, then Nasri and Bender make it 2-2 going into last five minutes (with dodgy goals) and then wait for it a Bentley free kick gets turned into his own net by one solomon sultzere campbell! Pricesless! For everything else there is mastercard!! Ok we will probably get spanked but you gotta have faith!! COYS!!

I could swear Ledley King only plays two games per season, Arsenal away and Arsenal at home. It's safe to say I'm kacking my pants about this match ... not because of the title implications, because that went away with John Terry's arm last night, but because well, I really don't want to lose to Spurs. lol

Rocky, Terry is leading a charmed life isn't he? I doubt he would have been sent off even if Milner's leg had ended up in Ireland after his tackle. No penalty would have been awarded even if he had caught the ball with both hands against Bolton before throwing it like Delap over Juskalinen into the Bolton goal.

agreed delta i dont think terry would get sent off in a game if he walked onto the pitch brandashing an uzi and threatening to blow limbs of if the other team didnt let chelski win. he is a dirty nasty person. onto the game tonite is it just me thats absolutley cacking it but at the same time looking forward to as 2 teams who generally play FOOTBALL and not KICK THE OTHER TEAMS PLAYERS TO DEATH AND PARK THE BUS go head to head proper cacking it as there is so much at stake for both where as normally its just bragging rights for us at least

I really do not have an idea on how tonight result is going to go! What I do hope is that the result is fair and not a result of crap refereeing or goals that never were or stupid sending offs!! A lot is riding on this game for both teams andhopefully Mr Clettenburg will tak einto account that its a NLD and not get whistle happy!!

I'll agree with that Muller. Let football decide the outcome of the game and not a inadequate ref, s*** linesman, dodgy decision, or naff pitch ... far too much of that crap going on these days. With regards to John Terry, he and Steven Gerrard are the sole reasons it makes it difficult for me to support England. I want them to do well in the summer, but I'm not sure my stomach could handle John Terry getting an MBE .... I would literally be sick.

Rocky, there will be no **** pitch at WHL it will be like playing on a carpet! I think everyone being out of the CL is going to pay dividends for our world cup and I dont care who gets what if we bring home the trophy! What a summer it could be!!!

I'd like to be able to agree with that, but I really do despise John Terry and Steven Gerrard, the fact that they are from the same country as me only serves to make it more embarassing. One can only hope he catches syphalyis from one of the Chelsea boys wives and missies out on the tournament.

I hear what your saying but I think he is crucial to our chances! Rio is alaways injured, Lescott is injured, Upson is struggling at the mo so we therefore need him!! Here i am bigging him up and now the tw*t will go and score against us on saturday knowing my luck!!

I'm bricking it today aswell! This is going to be one hell of a derby, expect the usual Spud fireworks for the first 15 minutes, if we can ride that storm without conceding we should do alright. So many injuries, with both teams you could make one hell of a starting XI with those out tonight.

HY, Crouch has a decent record against us. "Tottenham have only conceded 10 league goals at home this season, fewer than any other club in the division." -- see, this is what I mean. Like prits, I'm not confident about tonight, and I usually am for NLDs. That's a damned good home record. Gomes has proven this season that he is in fact a good keeper. I can just see how all this pre-game talk about Sol and RVP will wind up giving them indifferent performances. It'll be nervy. But I agree with MTY - at least it'll be a good game of football blessedly free of the northern kicking brigade. And ditto re JT - one of the most unpleasant footballers ever to play the sport.

Oh god, nearly kick off time. I friggin hate NLDs. When you play the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Inter Milan it's all cool, those are the nights you watch football for, they don't come around very often so win, draw, lose, you savour the occasion. NLD's happen 2, sometimes 3 times per season, they're not fun, and even if you win it won't be long before the next one comes along. And even though our recent league form against Spurs is awesome, they'll win one day, and each game I feel in my gut that today could be that day. They are awful awful matches to watch.
